You can thank large agribusiness for getting more subsidies to grown corn for fuel, making the price of corn so high with taxpayer subsidy that the farmer pretty much had no option but to plant it instead of hops and barley.

take away the subsidy, and corn fuel isn't even cheap to use, and is more expensive to produce.

But some nitwit government decided it just had to do "something" so it jumped on this fake biofuel bandwagon.

And the niche of hops being available to small brewers just vanished as a result, a 20 year niche. Not really their fault either, in any way.

Generation_D: instead of hops and barley

Seeing as hops fields are full of telephone poles to support the plants as they grow, I don't think you'd get much use from it for corn land. Also, hops is a perennial plant--it comes back every year, and is grown from the rootstock of existing plants. And land suitable for barley isn't really much good for corn, either.

/But never fear, there will be no shortage here, my hops (Cascade variety) are growing well, I'll probably be able to harvest 7 or 8 pounds for my brewing activities.

To me, it would be one thing if corn was a good source for biofuels. But it's not. It's actually one of the least efficient out there. So it doesn't even make any sense looked at from an environmental standpoint.

Corn may not be efficient for ethanol but its better than shelling out cash for Beaner sugar down in Cuba. Or do you think that's a good thing, comrade?

Mine- 4 Cascade rhizomes planted a month or so ago- are almost waist high now, and grow an inch or more a day... We're working on building a big-ass trellis for them.

I will help next year. I have 60 acres that I have to use for agriculture. I think it would be profitable at this point. Would take two years to begin producing in quanity.

Yes, corn ethanol is silly. But RTFA before you spout off nonsense. The current hop shortage is a result of a surplus 10 years ago. These articles show up every few weeks on here and always say the same thing.

Mass produced American beer DOES take like piss. Sam Adams is wonderful stuff however.

Also, the variety and flavor that American micro-breweries are producing now far surpasses the stuff Europe puts out. Don't get me wrong, Europe makes excellent beers but FINALLY America is rivaling them and in many ways surpassing our European cousins.

EVERYONE PANIC! if for real! The rising prices of quality beer is an axe over everyones head. Even you piss-drinking domestic drinkers.

Norad: BEER SNOBS PANIC. BEER SNOBS PANIC

FTFY

Do you actually know ANYthing about beer? Even crappy beers use hops.

I'm no snob, but I like beers with a lot of hops. It's a matter of personal preference. Not many people like the beers I like, and that's just fine. It's the reason they brew different beers.

What I do have a problem with is beer ignoramuses. "Only this is good" or "If you like that you're stupid"

Weizenbier is a perfect example. I can't stand the stuff, but if you like it, fine.

I draw the line at Budweiser. Read the label: "brewed with the finest RICE." If you honestly like Bud, I will accuse you of having an uneducated palate, and being a sheep who drinks what you are told to by advertisements.

My beer of choice in the US? Natural Ice. Hardly a snobby beer, but the best (or I might say: least offensive) of the mass-produced domestics.

I've been thinking about growing hops for some time now.

What kind of soil do you growers think is best for hops? About how much space would each plant need?

Salacious Salad 2008-05-25 12:39:48 PM
But what then will all the microbrews use to hide their crappy flavor.

Bob16 2008-05-25 12:40:12 PM
After seeing a bunch of people really screw themselves up (serious brain damage ect) with alcohol i gave it up.

I drink maybe 4 beers a year now.

Pot is so much less harmful it's not even close.

It depends on the type of beer you are brewing. I brew a traditional bitter so I don't really use a lot of hops and they aren't exotic types.

No, no. You meant ridiculously delicious.

I'm well aware that my tastes aren't "normal" even for the beer snob crowd. I really, really do enjoy an admittedly ridiculous amount of hopping in my beer.

In Dubai: 4 years for simple possession, life for distribution. Kinda puts a damper on it.

bingo the psych-o: You grow your own hops?

If only I had enough acreage for barley...

BooBoo23: Mine- 4 Cascade rhizomes planted a month or so ago- are almost waist high now, and grow an inch or more a day... We're working on building a big-ass trellis for them.

Mine have been established for seven or eight years. They are up to the second floor of the house. If you have them close to a building, all you need is a screw eye in the fascia board above them. Mine grow up a heavy piece of twine per vine.

Cut back to one or two vines per piece of rhizome you put in. Make the plants put their effort into hops cones and roots. Next year you will be amazed at how many sprouts you'll have to kill.

/And I've still got two or three pounds from last year's harvest in the freezer! And about two-thirds of a fifty-pound sack of Canadian two-row. And four 1.5 Kg cans of Munton's Extra Light. What beer shortage?
