Impressive. This chick beheads someone with stolen road signs. I can't even talk my way out of a ticket for a broken tail light.

It's completely his fault. The signs clearly said STOP. Whatever happened to personal responsibility?

Why the F was the stupid biatch driving NOT charged?

It's Her responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner and having giant razor blades hanging over the side of your vehicle is NOT safe.

no, you missed the part where she was "crying" and "distraught"

lucky she wasn't Puerto Rican or she would of been held for attempted murder...

It sounds like a tragic accident all around. If the gal stole the signs she should probably be charged with something, but the total mind fark this is giving her and will give her for the rest of her life.... well, that may be payment enough in the end. What a horrible thing.

Stolen or NOT, Doesn't matter.

The driver is responsible to operate SAFELY.

I found the link about the couple leaving their baby in a hotel freezer for six months and then shedding a few tears during the nvestigation more interesting.
What the hell is going on over there in Texas anyway?

"It just hurts so bad," Samantha Simmons, the victim's girlfriend, said. "It just happened so fast."

Dear, I'm sure it hurt a lot more for him.

I wonder exactly how far this sign was sticking out of the truck bed? Do they have usually narrow roads in this area? Perhaps she was "buzzing" by them to show off and ... oops, my bad.

I'm sure the driver feels "bad", but I can't buy the crap about how she's already suffering enough over the tragedy. I think the event would be much more memorable for her if there were some type of charges.... even possession of stolen property.... to follow her around for a while. (How can you NOT know stop signs in your truck might be a tiny bit stolen?)

This is a little off topic, but I'm just curious...

In the article they name the girlfriend, the friend, but not the kid that was killed or the driver. I can sort of understand the driver not being named, but if you are going to give the girlfriend's name then you may as well give the name of the kid who died.

The girl who was driving is stupid. Not only is she driving around with a bunch of stolen signs hanging out of the back of her truck, but she left them hanging out of the side!! I don't know how wide those streets were, but I assume that they must have been hanging out pretty far. That's just negligence, pure & simple. What did she think was going to happen if they hit someone or something? Candy would start shooting out of the wounds & everyone would start partying? The person would get up looney-toons style & everything would be fine? Also, why didn't she slow down if she had things hanging out of the truck & she saw pedestrians on the side of the road?

I'm sure she's suffering, but she could have avoided all of this by laying the signs down properly in her truck (or not stealing them at all). Odds are that she either helped steal the items or she was driving the truck without permission. I'm pretty sure that I'd realize that those signs were probably stolen & that it wasn't good to have them hanging out the side like that. Like tukatz said, she was probably showing off, trying to look bad, & caused the entire thing to happen. Sure, she's suffering, but that doesn't excuse what she did. I'm not saying that she set out to kill anyone, but she drove unsafely. Let's not victimize her or anything. She's 18. She should have been able to realize what metal signs whizzing down the road at 35+ mph could do to a person. I could have told her the result when I was in middle school.

Signs hanging over the side is NOT safe.

In Massachusetts there is a court case saying if there's something sticking out the side of your truck and it hits and kills a pedestrian, you are guilty of motor vehicle homicide.

There is a different mentality once you cross the Mason-Dixon line. That's why Darwin spends so much time there.

The kid who was killed is a minor; if there is an on-going investigation, they won't release his name. If the driver is in high school still, they might do the same for her, even though she's 18.

I'm guessing this guy was one of those geniuses who shamelessly walk on the road inside the white line and think they're perfectly safe.

If the driver hasn't been charged, it's almost certain that the kid was walking on the road.

That shouldn't matter, and in most jurisdictions I believe that legally it doesn't. You are responsible for what your car does to others and their property, full stop, unless it was for some reason completely unforeseeable (such as you borrow a friend's car, hit the radio button and a missile pops up out of the trunk and launches).

Welcome to Texas

"Last fall, the Texas State Legislature made damaging, destroying or tampering with transportation communication devices or equipment a third-degree felony. If convicted, those who damage the signs could face harsh punishment. Third-degree felony convictions carry up to a $10,000 fine and between two and 10 years in state prison."

I'll add one to the list. Several years ago I was helping clear a lot, to cut the downed timber up into firewood. As we were driving down the 4 lane + turn lane hwy to the place we passed a jogger going with the flow of traffic. Couple of hundred yards we turn next to a gas station. Where we were going to be working was less than half a mile from the hwy. After getting to the lot find I need to go to the store for 2 cycle oil and some gas. Heard sirens as I was getting into the truck. EMS, police, and fire are blocking the hwy. Talk to the folks at the store and this guy from Chicago was visiting relatives in AL and was out for his morning run. He had stopped in the store just the day before. A guy that had been working a midnight shift and was on his way home fell asleep, veered off the road into the jogger, mashed him against the embankment and killed him. I'm guessing he thought it was safer to stay on one side rather than crossing the traffic. It all happened in 15 minutes or so and really impressed me with how quick a life can end.

As to the signs, if teens were taking them it was just because they can. It sounds like they were doing it wrong. I did that too but we used sockets and wrenches to take just the sign, for it to be sticking out of the truck the support post had to still be attached. Where was Lou at to not spot the truck and signs going down the road before hand, hmmmm donuts........off for coffee.
