Another solution- resign as mayor, serve jail time, and fade into obscurity.

I like my solution better.

They weren't suspended for pulling him over, subby. They were suspended because they didn't even bother doing a field sobriety test.

What's so asinine about that?

A misleading headline on Fark? I must be new here...

Yeah, cos crashing through a toll booth and continuing to drive without headlights on wasn't enough of a test.

Subby didn't read the article. They were suspended for not following policy in investigating a possible DUI.

Subby FAILS MISERABLY.

One of the cops was suspended after calling the chief -- and apparently being told what to do -- and then the chief is the one who issued the suspensions. No wonder his lawyer wants an independent investigation. The chief seems to be in dire need of a new career.

That's how I read it.

Chief didn't even start an investigation until after another agency noticed it a couple weeks later.

Chief try to CHA, issued light punishment in hope eveything would just blow over, gonna get ass-raped by police union lawyer.

No great loss.

Because, of course, that's not at all a fishy justification with a much more sinister AND more plausible one lurking right behind it.

how drunk do you have to be to crash through a toll booth? i'm drunk right now but i have managed to run this keyboard.

CLEARLY WE NEED TO OUTLAW ALCOHOL;
THAT WILL SURELY SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

If people weren't being lied to about the 'sinister effects' of illegal drugs, they'd realize they've been with us as long as we've been here. We've not only survived but thrived with them, and this farker thinks they may have played a very serious role in our own evolution.

If you stop at the toll booth, you get charged $5, if you blow through it, you get a bunch of cops chasing you. However, they stop chasing if you get out of the small circle search area.

ghost_who_walks: Yeah, cos crashing through a toll booth and continuing to drive without headlights on wasn't enough of a test.

I'm one to ever defend cops, but...they still need to do the tests.

Why? Because "He looked/acted drunk" doesn't hold up in court, not without proof. Do the tests, have proof of the DUI, and this whole situation can be avoided.

That's why I cruise around in cop cars. Cops don't pay tolls. Also, you get a shotgun.

Oh yeah Justice for all my ass.

FTFY. Hate to disrupt your imaginary game of Smokey and the Bandit, but the reason the cops "quit chasing you" is because they never started.

Subby didn't really fail too bad if you guys would try to read between the lines, or better yet, read the comments posted after the article. Apparently The two officers in question called thier chief during the stop, a short conversation ensued, and then the mayor was promptly released. Smells like teen spirit to me.

Dubai Vol 2008-05-25 05:42:22 AM
For those confused by TFA the real story is in the comments. Apparently the cops were "just following orders" after calling their chief to apprise him of the situation. Yes, it's dirty from top to bottom, but TFA doesn't tell us any of that.

Subby's headline is completely accurate given that the chief of police gave specific instructions on how the officers were to respond to this incident lol

they should still get the suspensions but the chief should be fired

This is the same mayor that called the police and told them to to arrest his friend and just give him a ticket. His friend stomped the shiat out of a woman who shot down his advances. She's got brain damage now, but the guy was friends with the mayor so no big deal right? The real story is in the comments, not in the article...

TheBigJerk 2008-05-25 09:28:49 AM
gopher321: How is Kwame Kilpatrick involved in this?

My first thoughts when reading the headline.

FTFA
but the officers declined to ticket him or administer a field sobriety test, as required by the department's policy manual. The officers then allowed Price to call someone to drive him home.

Two weeks later, the agency cited Price with careless driving, and Price said afterward that he would pay the ticket and for the damage to the gate.

Sounds like the department is punishing them for letting him off, not the other way around. Of course it is also possible the careless driving citation was "too mean" for Herr Mayor and he wanted revenge for even that slight. I don't play with those local politics so I do not know.

Not drunk at all. I know a woman who stopped at the tollbooth, paid the toll, then DROVE THROUGH THE GATE, not noticing it had not moved yet. No drinking at all, actually. She was forced to listen to my little sister ramble about My Little Pony during this, but that's not an excuse.

The sign the mayor plowed through is over eight feet wide by three feet high and contains over a dozen huge, bright flashing red lights that can be seen from several miles away in a dense fog.

OTOH, said mayor when stopped was found to be in the company of neither a live boy nor a dead hooker and thus by Louisiana law should receive a free pass or so sayest the currently incarcerated former governor, Edwin Edwards.

So let's recap the important stuff, you Farkers have already missed Mardi Gras and Jazzfest for this year. Bad Form. You now only have less than eight months to start planning to attend either or both next year. Quit wasting your time worrying about the silly stuff and start planning to "come on down." Oh and plan to bring lots of money with you, what with the recession and all the price of chocolate has skyrocketed.

And where are you getting this information from? None of that is in the article at all. Comparing the article to the headline subby is a complete moron who got the story completely backwards... Do you have a better link that subby SHOULD have submitted?

No, we didn't miss anything. We didn't go. This was not an accident.

I'm not interested in doing anything in a city filled with people stupid enough to stay there after it's idiotic location has already been so clearly illustrated by mother nature. Call me when it's relocated to higher ground. Until then enjoy your floods, stabbings, lazy farkers on welfare and frat boy vomit.

Mongo cut wood 2008-05-25 05:15:03 PM
FTA The officers stopped Price at the first crossover, about three miles from Mandeville, and the mayor admitted he had been drinking. Price also said he couldn't remember hitting the toll booth barrier, but the officers declined to ticket him or administer a field sobriety test, as required by the department's policy manual. The officers then allowed Price to call someone to drive him home.

Subby's headline is misleading. They were suspended for not doing their duty.

Well... I tried READING the article, including possibly the CAPTION for the pic:

Causeway Police Chief Felix Loicano suspended two officers in connection with a traffic stop of Mandeville Mayor Eddie Price. Sgt. Chris Dupont, who called Liocano the night of the incident, was demoted to corporal and suspended for three days. Officer Chad Dorsett received a one day suspension.

So, mongbiohazard, here's your course material (new window).
