Apparently The two officers in question called thier chief during the stop, a short conversation ensued, and then the mayor was promptly released. Smells like teen spirit to me.

For those confused by TFA the real story is in the comments. Apparently the cops were "just following orders" after calling their chief to apprise him of the situation. Yes, it's dirty from top to bottom, but TFA doesn't tell us any of that.

Two weeks later, the agency cited Price with careless driving, and Price said afterward that he would pay the ticket and for the damage to the gate.

Sounds like the department is punishing them for letting him off, not the other way around. Of course it is also possible the careless driving citation was "too mean" for Herr Mayor and he wanted revenge for even that slight. I don't play with those local politics so I do not know.
