dangelder: And only 4M of taxpayer money spent on this!

Huh? I don't think it would cost $4,000,000 for him to get a diploma. If you're referring to the Vietnam war, that cost much more than $4,000,000.

Awesome.

At graduation practice Thursday, the student body was informed of Collins' situation. Their response:

"They all applauded," Harmon said. "I didn't ask them to do that. They had an excitement all of their own. ... It was exciting to me the students showed that enthusiasm. I think it did mean something to them."

Nice to see the kids get it, too.

It's nice to know that getting access big pieces of the American dream isn't just all about age, or denied to people who served America, as sunk costs of their service.

From the Operation Recognition website at http://www.dmva.state.co.us/page/va/op_rec

* They learned geography by traveling to foreign lands that they would have only learned about through text books.
* They learned a foreign language from conversations with the citizens in these countries.
* They studied biology through the medical attention they offered their fellow soldiers when they were wounded.
* Their psychology lessons came from sharing compassion when their comrades died in their arms.
* In the subject of history they not only learned it, they MADE history, and we are the recipients of the world they saved

/I'm kind of torn between HERO and SPIFFY
//70% service connected disabled

Think of it like the kid that gets beaten up by bullies. If he just takes it and cries, then he gets beaten up more. If he fights back, the bullies beat him up but respect his gumption, and then the bullies stop beating the kid up, and they become best pals for life. That is how it always works out.

I think that was the master plan.

I think SW's point is that we LOST the Vietnam war. Therefore, if they were a threat, there should have been some negative effects of losing. You know, like what happened to Poland when they LOST against the Nazis. (Godwin x 2)

As it turns out, there appeared not to be any such negative effects from losing the Vietnam war.

(Other than a bunch of dead and crippled people, of course)

eh I knew the simpletons would come out saying such things.

I hate to be the first one to tell you two but serving your country doesn't just include signing up for the military, there are other deeds you can do that are equally respectable in their own light.

As for helping out your local community... why wouldn't you want to make the area you live a better place?

This is the reason why we are in the shiatfest today.

I wish some of the teenage (mentally, if not in age) dumbasses who "contribute" to FARK discussions would climb down from their tower of all true knowledge to realize that you can be a hero to fight for your country even if the underlying morals of the war are suspect. What made him a hero, was that his country called, and he went. If you have arguments against the war itself, the people to pillory are not the soldiers, but the politicians whose failures make the wars in the first place.
I am against the war in Iraq in every way possible, but I salute the bravery of those that joined up to defend Britain not knowing if there would be war, where they would be sent, or if they'd ever come back from it.
