hopefully they won't make the common Texas mistake and include restaurants that serve that abomination known as "beef bbq"...God plainly told us all that proper BBQ was to be made from pork, with chicken a distant second and generally for those on Kosher diets.

What!? No (insert favorite place here)? This list is useless!

You shut your lying Georgian mouth when Texans are talking. :)

Ooh, we did this in NC (p) last year. It's a different way to bbq if you're not from there.

Mmmmmm barrrrbecuuuuuueee....

This is funny. I just pulled the issue out of my mailbox about an hour ago.

What's wrong with beef BBQ? I love it all. I've been to places in both North and South Carolina, Memphis, Nashville, all over Texas, and Oklahoma. It's all great.

This is yankee talk. OUTSIDE of Texas, BBQ is pork. I lived in Texas for 33 years and just moved to Virginia, where they are also proud of their BBQ. But, it's some vinegar and pork thing.

They probably haven't been able to actually get there in time for food since.

East coasters have some odd bbq habits... what with mustard and much more vinegar. More dry rubs too.

Now Chinese BBQ (like what the actual chinese eat, none of that Moo goo gai pan crap), that is some good BBQ.

Used to be a place in Irving called, The Big Ni**er BBQ.

The owner was a HUGE (like 450 lbs) black guy, and he wasn't about to change the name for anyone. He even had "bidness" cards with his name and "HNIC" for the title.

Not around anymore. Was really good, too.

plombage: Kansas City BBQ is the best.

I've heard that and I've also heard it doesn't live up to it's reputation.

As far as the ratings go... the range seems to be 3.5 - 4.5. That's a 1 point spread. I have a hard time taking that seriously. Out of of a possible 5, why don't we see any 1's, or 2's?

I guess since everyone is armed in Texas, the reviewers are trying to be overly polite and not let anyone know their BBQ place sucks. But it stands to reason that not all BBQ restaurants can have the same level of quality of food, atmosphere and service. A place could get high marks for food, but low marks for being a dirty sty that is unworthy of taking a crap in. Other places might have lower quality food, but better service and atmosphere.

I'm not sure what their ratings criteria was, but seeing as how the scores came out so similar, the ratings criteria was either not well rounded or the reviewers were not being critical enough.

Bah. KC makes good sauces and ribs, I'll give them that. But they have no idea what to do with a brisket. And their sausage bites, when you can even find any.

/Texan who lived in KC area for three years.

Pretty damn close. The brisket had no flavor, the sauce was nearly ketchup and they served everything with mustard. The beans were basically boston baked beans.

Don't like Texas? Good, stay away. There are no jobs and the food sucks.

Went to Kreuz Market over winter break. Drove from Dallas all the way down to Lockhart just for lunch. Breakfast was kolaches in West.

It was a good day.

Ohhhh I HATE places like that.
You know how they do that?
They STEAM or BOIL the meat!

They water it down to make it soft, then they drown it in sauce to add back the flavor that was sucked out by the water. That is sacrilege to the mighty BBQ gods and any apostate of Ruby Tuesdays and their ilk should be slathered in sauce and burned at the stake.

The Salt Licks a gimme and I'm glad they got no-teef listed. Sam's and Stubb's didnt make the cut? WtF?

I work at UT Southwestern in the summers. Easy BBQ access, right? I mean, it's just across the goddamn'd street.

And yet, I miss it every time. =(

Hah. My brother had HNIC listed as his job tittle when he worked for my parents. Until someone calling to collect on a bill asked him what it meant of course.

Having lived in both places, I can safely say that KC bbq is leaps and bounds beyond Texas BBQ.

plombage 2008-05-24 03:06:07 PM
The thing about KC BBQ is if you don't like a certain kind all you have to do is walk a few block and you'll find what your looking for.

/KC has over 100 BBQ restaurants
//I'm a little bias lived here all my life.

I encourage every Farker in Texas that likes BBQ and doesn't read Texas Monthly to check out this link. It is the opening story for the issue referred to in the headline.

I have never been to this place but now I want to go.

Nope. Beef ribs suck. I like brisket, but for ribs, pork is the one.

Cooper's and Hard 8 are over-rated -- and a decent-sized serving of meat and a drink is gonna be $20. And I'm surprised Soul Man's BBQ wasn't on the list.

The Pit Barbecue in Houston Tx. Best barbecue in town. Richmond right outside 610 loop. Any Houston farkers should check it out.

I can't believe Billy Bob's hamburgers and McBee's BBQ (no longer even owned by the McBee's) are on that list. I love me some of both, but the best in Texas I'd say not. Best in Hondo, TX, sure, but that doesn't say a whole farking lot.

Well, that's probably because they only list the top 50, plus some "honorable mentions". They didn't bother listing anything with a lower score.

No, I know Salt Lick doesnt use that slogan ...I just chucked it in as no one had yet :)

Wow - I had forgotten about House Park! Old HP Field (was like running up and down a hill on that football field)

I recall that slogan being used at this Mom and Pop place on East 12th. I cannot remember the name. It was a real shiathole of a building, but damn the food was terrific.

Do you know this place by chance?

That's the McBee's in Pleasanton, not Hondo. I've eaten there, its good.
