Actually, they tend to treat people with exactly the same respect they are treated. On a person-by-person basis, of course.

No, they don't. They live completely in an us/them world. If you're not a cop, then you're a bad guy. And they will treat you as such with no provocation.

nashBridges: I've met a lot of cops, but I've met precious few smart ones. I think police departments all over the country would benefit by requiring at least half of their hires to have attended some college or at least pay for college for existing hires. Law enforcement, ironically, seems to be a refuge for the undereducated.

Generally speaking, why would anyone intelligent want to be a cop? The perks are almost nil compared to the dangers, and it's only getting worse.

Most unfortunately, bad laws are the greatest factor in the public's loss of respect for those assigned to enforce those laws.

I suppose one could make a claim it qualifies as "assault", and possibly "sexual assault". On the other hand, any judge worth his salt would be laughing too hard to hear the case.

Save your ink. Most farkers have no understanding of police work and no desire to even try to understand. Let it go. They'll eventually notice something shiny and all run off to look at it.

McStinky, talk to any random cop in my town. They're all rude, neandertalic assholes, and they have no problem letting you know it. ONCE, ONCE have I encountered a polite cop in this town. A decade or more ago, the cops in this town were everyone's best friend, hell my uncle was a Sgt (gave me his shield on retirement) but over time, corruption within the department and the city leadership has driven them all away. Now all we have are these roided up hired thugs who cover each others asses like a blanket. It's the same story pretty much anywhere you go.

Most of the old school street cops were decent people who believed in the cause, and I'm sure your late father was a good person and a good cop. And who knows, there might even be hope for your son. But by and large, from personal experience, most cops are ASSHOLES.

Cops are nothing but glorified meter maids. They could not be bothered with doing their job. Instead they do whatever they want to do. Knowing full well that the system has been modified to not send cops to jail. Even for murdering some innocent victim.

Eh, I've seen this kind of thing before. Typically it's undercover officers dishing out beat-downs to punks who deserve it. It keeps the area safe. You don't wanna be doing this kinda thing while in uniform though.

I think that's right. I keep waiting for some local to run for council with the platform of shiatcanning 80% of the stupid laws and stupid fines.

I'm a big government liberal and I would like to see most government eliminated if only to reduce the stupid fines and taxes and laws used to raise stupid fines and taxes.

An old friend of mine from college has been trying to get into whatever police department he can in South Florida. He keeps getting turned down for basic entry-level patrol positions because he "has too much education or experience."

I wouldn't say that a degree in Criminal Justice counts as an excessive amount of education. Its more of a degree that can be used to placate your parents while you spend all of your time out at the bars.

Last year a city cop here went psycho and put three rounds from his side arm into his wifes chest, killing her. It made huge headlines. Now suddenly a year later when he's supposed to be coming up on trial, no one knows a damn thing about it, like it didn't even happen. There's almost a sense of denial that such a cop and wife ever existed.

kd1s 2008-05-24 05:27:38 PM
The problem with cops is that they don't hire the hyper-intelligent. Why? Because smart people get bored with police work, that's why.

So we end up with the mental deficients patrolling our streets. You know shiat like what happened to this kid is bound to happen.

I've known a number of police officers through my time. One is now deputy chief, the other two left the force because they couldn't take the boredom anymore.

xBodo99 2008-05-24 05:28:11 PM
I was actually wondering about this the other night. I'm a 'mo, I live in Hawaii. I was walking in downtown Honolulu this week around 5pm and there was a handsome Filipino police officer with a rather large package walking his beat. I was debating with myself whether I could or should chat him up. I couldn't imagine there would be anything criminal to it, but I basically decided that he could say whatever he wanted if he felt like it and I would be basically screwed (in the less good way).

But yeah, he was hot.

Trance750 [TotalFark] 2008-05-24 05:28:45 PM
There was only one police officer I have dealt with who seemed to go out of his way to see how big of a prick he could be. But the rest of them were very polite, professional, and respectful

chtorran [TotalFark] 2008-05-24 05:30:18 PM
I'm friends with quite a few cops. The biggest problem I've seen is that good cops tend to get frustrated because they don't want to just enforce the law, they also want to administer justice.

Our system specifically prohibits police from administering justice... that is the exclusive domain of the courts.

Almost every cop I've ever known doesn't quite get this concept. They decide that a suspect/prisoner "deserves" a certain treatment. Most of us would even agree that a child-molester or rapist "deserves" a good ass-kicking... but it isn't the cops job to do that. It's especially frustrating when the courts fail, and someone who is clearly guilty gets released due to a bad jury decision, or a legal technicality.

This invariably leads to disgruntled, angry police who tend to take out their frustrations on whoever pisses them off, whether they've committed a crime or not.

I don't know what the solution should be to this problem, I just know that I've seen it happen a lot.

And in general, the best way to avoid having problems with the police is to avoid interacting with them when possible, and being polite and respectful when not.

McStinky: Thanks for calling my deceased father and my son a pig. Fark you.

I've always said that the only people who think cops are OK are other cops and their relatives. But I'm sure you have an unbiased opinion. I mean, if your husband and son were corrupt assholes, I'm sure you'd be the first to admit it, right?

Bad cops are bad people that just happen to be cops.

FTFY

My prayer is that all of you super-liberal authority bashers discover one day how necessary they are in your lives.

When would that be? I can't remember the last time a police officer helped me with anything. But they have harased me and taken my money and property on a regular basis. I'd rather buy a gun and take my chances than rely on police 'protection', which essentailly means that if anything bad happens to you, the cops will show up after it's too late, usually after you call them to report the thing they're supposedly protecting you from.

With all due respect, but you and your cop friends should worry more about the opposite situation, where the innocent people are put in jail or fined excessively. Like, you know, drug-users or prostitutes and their clients.

What was the kid arrested for? The video is surprisingly narrationless

xBodo99 2008-05-24 05:46:03 PM
I've learned not to expect a whole lot from the police:

When my mother was murdered, they refused to even talk to me. It's more of a DA issue, but apparently getting to Mexico is a great way to avoid charges. My family wouldn't have even wanted the death penalty, so extradition would not have been impossible. Oh, and the getaway driver didn't even get arrested.

When my boyfriend (yeah, still a 'mo) hit me, the police couldn't be bothered to act, even though they legally have no discretion in Abuse of Family or Household Member situations -- they're required to arrest and press charges.

When my mentally ill client assaulted a police officer, they wouldn't even bother to arrest him because they felt it would do no good. Because leaving an actively violent and psychotic guy on the street is a wiser choice.

But go 65 on the highway, and God help you.
