Well sure, alcohol sales traditionally go up during recessions. That being said, damn I miss Sweetwater...

Dick_Hertz 2008-05-24 01:37:16 PM
It is NOT 'recession proof'! We recently had a series of news articles about beer drinkers moving "down-Scale", meaning they were giving up the pricier beers and going for the "Bronze".

Yet another snobby beer thread in the making. If only there were a way to end it now. I drink what I like/ can afford. You drink what ever the fark you want to drink, and the Fark will be a better place for all.

P.S., Your beer sucks!

You know what they say the industries that are recession/depression proof are the ones that cater to vices. Alcohol, sex, gambling, etc.

Dick_Hertz: It is NOT 'recession proof'! We recently had a series of news articles about beer drinkers moving "down-Scale", meaning they were giving up the pricier beers and going for the "Bronze".

I thought that was from the hops shortage. Maybe I'm not remembering the article you are.

It's the same story at Manuel's Tavern in Virginia Highlands.

Where I work, I'll be there tonight 5-close.

Agreed. This is fine for beer snobs, but things are getting tough for us gasoline drinkers.

Writer must have been drunk when writing. In the first three sentences, he used "isle" and "pitch" when he meant "aisle" and "pinch". Quality copy editing at work!

farkin' A right. I may be broke, but I'm still going to do all I can to spring for tasty beer.

It's a hobby and a lifestyle, not an addiction :P

I guess it comes down to how much you drink. Over here in WI, a 6-pack of MGD in bottles runs about $6 or so at the local liquor stores. At 12 oz a bottle, that makes beer (at least MGD, which I consider a low-mid grade beer) cost roughly $12.40 a gallon. Gas up in my area is $4.12 a gallon right now, but that's a discussion for another thread.

Ah, who the fark cares anyway? I'm off to the liquor store tonight to gets me some beer. I ran out last week. Luckily I don't drink all that much anymore, so I can afford the better stuff.

Homebrew kicks ass. It's some of the best stuff I've come across so far. I've just been too lazy to make it myself. I know how to make some sparkling wine (not exactly top shelf stuff, but it gets ya drunk) in a pinch, so as long as I have access to cheap grape juice, I can make my own booze even in the impending apocalypse.

Great Janitor 2008-05-24 02:09:22 PM
It's kind of like what a teacher I had in the 8th grade explained to me, when times are good, people drink. When times are bad, people drink. Invest in beer.

Anyone with money to invest, I suggest checking out the Vice fund.
It is a collection of stock portfolio in defense, areospace, gambling, alcohol, and tobacco.
This shiat seems to always go up more when we have a recession.
But it's definitely a long term mutual fund to invest in, not a short-term, quick-growth fund.

I don't care if it reaches $10/bottle. I'm drinking my farking Sam Adams, and there's nothing a recession can do about it.

Pot isn't, went up from 50/100 to 60/110 for the good stuff here in KY.

How does one invest in beer? I buy beer, but I drink it. I think I'm doing it wrong. But you don't buy it, you rent it...know what I mean?

ultraholland 2008-05-24 02:40:38 PM
Not really. People may continue to buy beer no matter what the state of the economy. Hell, they may even buy more the worse things get. But as prices of transportation and raw materials rise, so too does the price of booze.

I think speakeasys in the prohibition/depression period prove that beer is more important than money.

There is a Guy Madden directed movie concerning this phenomenon. "The Saddest Music in the World" starring Isabella Rossellini. In the story American prohibition and depression were the perfect storm for her Canadian beer business.
Most accessible direction from the incomparable oeuvre of Madden.

A degree in biology would be far more helpful, since beer is not chemically engineered.

All of life is a balance...i'll still get my good craft beer and pinch pennies in other places. I'm 40 now...i don't get a 30 rack and sit around the dorm room anymore...i'll drink 6 great beers as opposed to 12 Schaefers.

My bi-weekly Guinness & Harp run just became Yuengling & Miller Light, not out of necessity, thankfully, but because I became angry at the 20% increase in Guinness & Harp in one month. at this rate I'll be perusing the Natty and MD 20/20 by the end of the year.

Which yeast do you use? The Wyeast Weihenestephan yeast purposely tastes like bananas. Also make absolutely sure not to hit the upper boundaries of the recommended fermentation temperature, because that'll give it a banana taste and flavor.

"Homebrew kicks ass. It's some of the best stuff I've come across so far. I've just been too lazy to make it myself."

This.

Got back into homebrewing, which I tried back in the bad old days when nothing was available, and gave up. Now there's tremendous availability on line of a wide variety of products, which will make pretty much any beer "style" you desire, and this is quality stuff, not the AMC (Anheuser/Miller/Coors) thin, fizzy lager. An investment of $100 will get anyone into homebrewing with a vengeance, and a bottle supply can be cadged at local bars if you're on a budget. I just ordered two kits plus caps (an American Strong Ale and an Imperial Stout) and it was $100 delivered. That's for 10 gallons of beer. A previous poster gave the figure of $12 / gallon for Miller Genuine Draft (I certainly wouldn't know about that), so I can drink immensely superior beer for less than the, uh, "popular" stuff, and anyone who can follow the directions on a package of brownie mix can brew good beer.

Beer certainly is more expensive than Gasoline but it sure does taste better. I don't own a car but my six pack costs $14.06 and I'm happy with that.
