The scary thing is some of those women are still flight attendants today, but they are in their late 50's and still think they are hot. They're not.

Nothing's changed. They're just using the same planes and flight attendants from 1972.

I was in the national air & space museum with my kid the other day (Washington, DC). They had pictures of people dressing up to go on a flgiht; and stewardessed serving real food in real dishes. Today's kids will never see this, except in some old photos.

i remember being able to smoke in any seat on the plane...
then in the restricted area in the rear...
then the little ashtrays had screws into them, locking them up tight...
i don't remember so many crying kiddies back then either...

Oddly enough, Flugzeug is one of the first nouns covered in Rosetta Stone for German. Der Junge ist unter dem Flugzeug. I don't know why they thought that phrase would be useful, I found a use for it.

I am a smoker, but even I would be pissed at someone smoking while in an airplane. I can't imagine the eye-level haze back then.

The FAA doesn't allow smoking on any flights, but they still require the manufacturer of the aircraft to install ashtrays.

///go ahead....look it up

And look at all that space on a 707!
Of course back then air travel was a relative luxury. Quite pricey.
If you want decent treatment and quiet comfort just pony up for first class.

What exactly is the penalty for smoking on a flight in the US? Does anyone know? Do you serve jailtime? Nowadays, you probably get charged with some form of terrorism...

my cigar, blown in your direction, while my pit stained, eight hour old shirt sends its greetings as i talk non stop about air crashes and my work as a electronics parts counter (have to count each resistor, must have a proper count you know for loss prevention,at factory's around the world.) and i would just have to show you how to get that clean feeling with those warm towels..down there..stopps the inch you see..

then bj's all around..

Subgenius 2008-05-24 05:12:00 PM
Ahh, the days of the quick 'boing' to indicate that you were at 10,000 feet... followed by the simultaneous sound of 30 lighters going off at once and the spreading haze from the back to the front. I don't miss those days at all.

I do miss PSA, though. They were cool.

Speaking of missing things, I haven't seen the dark haired steward^h^h^h cabin attendant in picture 8 in about 20 years! Her name is Barbara (no last names, farkies). She worked out of Los Angeles in the early 80's.

/yes, I'm that old.

Not true, fly Porter Air. :-) Real dishes and glasses and even pretty stewardesses with pillbox hats included.

You fail, subby. Airfare was NOT cheap in the 60's. I flew everywhere with my parents, and the expensive fares kept it exclusive and highly service oriented. Now it's like taking the damn bus, only with smaller seats.

HBK 2008-05-24 05:30:22 PM
I travel often. If I ever have a child, I will always buy him/her a seat, even as a baby. There's nothing more annoying than a baby sitting on the lap of the passenger next to you. Crying, burping, smelling. It's horrible.

Please people, buy your baby its own seat.

Thanks

I had real plates (and excellent food!) on business class Virgin Atlantic.

The last time I flew Midwest, the food was still excellent, albeit served on disposable plates. I hope they can stay in business.

It can still be done, even better than it used to be here. Only you can't really get it on a U. S. carrier.

If you still want to see amazingly hot stewardesses, fly one of the Asian airlines. I flew Korean Air from Malaysia to Inchon, and then Inchon to the US. All the stewardesses looked like models (and I still have no idea where they found that many tall Asian women).

The service was great as well, even though I was sitting in coach (the seats still sucked, but what can you do, that's how they build them these days).

Was in DC late last year and went to Air und Space Musuem where they were unveiling the new Boeing 747 exibit and had some special guests from, I think, the first commercial flights in the US (TWA). The head stewardess was there as well as a pilot. She was telling us that back then there were concerns that the plane could not be evacuated fast enough if there were an emergency on the ground. Well, they did a spontaneous evac after a flight and was able to get everyone off in under 60 seconds!! I forgot the exact number of passengers and crew, but was quite impressive. I had to clarify with her that the passengers and crew were unaware that this was going to take place. I also had to confirm that these passengers didn't raise an uproar for having to go through an emergency evac drill. Sure enough, back then everyone was thrilled to participate in such an exercise and were even more excited that they helped the airline show the FAA that the aircraft could be evacuated fully loaded in under a minute. She also agreed that if such an event were to take place today, the airline would be swamped by lawsuits and complaints from passengers and family members for having to go through it when there was no actual emergency.
