They weren't stolen. They just dropped a quarter in the meter and hit the sidewalk for a while.

While I know Fark's disdain for pointing the finger at other white people, you'd better hope this article doesn't reach austraila. Their ability to hunt whales to the brink of extinction as long as it's profitable, then back off and declare themselves the protector of an endangered species is remarkable. Hunt until the species is almost depleted. then break off and act like they had nothing to do with it. It'd almost piss you off, but then again, they're white.

tdpatriots12: So yeah, anyone figured out why they needed transparent aluminum?

They wanted to be able to see into the holding tank, and ~2 inches of clear aluminium would do the job of ~6 inches of glass. Might have been a weight issue? I don't remember all of it, i saw the movie once like 10 years ago.

/Yes i realize how much sense it makes to worry about the weight of a piece of glass when hauling 10 million gallons of water and two whales around... i didn't write it.

tdpatriots12: So yeah, anyone figured out why they needed transparent aluminum?

Nerd alert (me)...

They didn't. They used 6 inch thick plexiglass, of course. However, the transparent aluminum, had it been available, would have only been 1 inch thick, lighter, and as strong or stronger. This formula was used to barter for the 6 inch material.

Why plexiglass instead of metal for a short trip? Probably lighter... I'm thinkin' it's probably not as strong, and I'd want some strong for going through a time warp via gravity well of the sun at warp while carrying several thousand tons of whales and sea water...

But the reality is, you can't see the whales in the ship, and that wouldn't make for good movie visuals. Much more exciting to see whales floating about in a Klingon Bird of Prey's hold...

Which is a whole other discussion about space consideration and mission types and the usability of that particular vessel for cargo... But hey, it's a movie. Deal with it.

/not a *total* nerd... Practicality won out. Kirk and co. aren't just *any* crew... they's pretty savvy about the viewing public... :)

LoneVVolf: They wanted to be able to see into the holding tank

That's what I was getting at. They could have used regular old aluminum, it'd be a small price to pay for not (possibly) changing history by giving some random dude the formula.

But yes, nitpicking a movie with so many silly elements...

The Chekov as a Russian spy bit? Inspired!

/dialysis? what is this, the dark ages?

It's a few hundred years and at least 1 world war later. Perhaps San Fran isn't fully intact anymore?

yep... they traded the formula for transparent aluminum in lieu of payment for the plexiglass.

tdpatriots12: That's what I was getting at. They could have used regular old aluminum, it'd be a small price to pay for not (possibly) changing history by giving some random dude the formula.

In the book, they gave the formula to the guy who later "invented" transparent aluminum. They touch on this in the movie, but it's confirmed in the book. Thus, McCoy has to practically hold Scotty back from hero worshipping the plexiglas guy.

Mofo_Jones: Thus, McCoy has to practically hold Scotty back from hero worshipping the plexiglas guy.

Would have been way cooler if they did it this way in the film. You'd still have the "haha Scotty doesn't know how to use old computers" part of the scene, and it wouldn't be quite so stupid.
