You know, I love this. I hope to hell that gas goes to twenty bucks a gallon because it will be the first time you goddamned middle class people have ever felt hardship. Seriously, you are all so smug sitting in your suburbs and for the first time ever, you actually have to realize that you live in the real world where people don't get subsidies to live like a "normal" person. Enjoy the reality of the real world where America is a decadent empire fading into oblivlion. Sucks, doesn't it?

You know, if you were making $150K / year you wouldn't give a crap about the price of gas.

So, I guess you're going to Wally-World to spend some money on wicker lawn furniture and bug spray and a case of natural light.

Well, have a little bit of mercy on me, at least. Could you give a code word or something so that when society collapses and the cities are in flames and I'm leading a rag-tag group of survivors west away from the cannibals and zombies in the small hope of finding peace in the open desert and we arrive at the stronghold in which you're ruling over a tribe of like-minded individuals, we could at least be allowed in as gladiators and clowns for your amusement? It would mean a lot to me to be able to tell everybody that we have a destination in mind.

Nice blanket statement. Quilt much?

For the record, I don't own a car, never learned to drive, so gas price as an immediate expense doesn't affect me. No budget influence. But since most of our FOOD INDUSTRY is dependent on transportation, it appears that we're going to have substantial price shocks for food - so that'll hit, oh, everyone. And paying for electricity for the air conditioning and whatever energy source anyone uses for heat in winter, that'll kick us all over the next months too. So imagining that this energy pinch somehow affects "the middle class" in some equalizing way is pretty delusional.

As for this weekend as a vacation opportunity, I'm gonna pretty much stay home and install the new blinds I bought at the ridiculously cheap home store near work. It's the husband's father's day present.

I'm part of the (lower?) middle class, and gas prices don't affect me one tiny bit. And I drive a lot. It'll have to hit $10 a gallon before I even start to worry about the monthly gas budget.

But I want it to go really high. Then maybe Americans will stop being so damned dependent on gas, and maybe, JUST MAYBE, our f*cking politicians will stop invading other countries to get more of it.

This should be a really one-sided debate. By the laws of basic economics, the people complaining about gas prices should not even be in this thread biatching. By now, you should have cancelled your internet service, along with your cable subscription to pay for gas. If you're in this thread whining, then you have failed at life, and may god or whoever you get on your knees to pray to have mercy on your pathetic soul.

I don't think you understand the way money works. When the middle class are living the lifestyle of someone making 15k per year, the people making 15k per year are living the lifestyle of -- that's right -- Somalians. So reign in your enthusiasm.

On a related note, if you're able-bodied and not retarded, there is no excuse for making 15k per year. You can *start*, with no experience and no knowledge, making 20k as a retail monkey at a hardware store if you don't sell yourself short.

I don't know what the fark you're talking about. I see/hear all this gloom and doom for the economy. I'm on vacation, this weekend, paid for my vacation to London in the fall. Let see my car is paid for... I'm saving half or more of my paycheck every two weeks.

How can I do this you ask? (even if you don't) um a mortgage I can afford, a paid for used car (four cylinders).

I don't feel any sympathy for the jackasses that bought 300k-500k homes, drive suv's have 2.4 rugrats while making a middle class wage.

If you're really making 15k I hope you're living in mom's basement in rural america and going to school. Otherwise find a new job and quit biatching.

Exactly that. I will deprioritize a *lot* before I get rid of vacations. I'd be happy with a small house, a used car, no dinners out. If I had to give up the hope of seeing Germany or Australia one day, I'd lose it.

I always get a kick out of these "how to cut back" news stories, because I've been living like that my whole life. Americans are now on the ropes because they can't afford to live like farking pigs anymore, yet somehow Europe has managed to get by for hundreds of years like this.

Sounds like a pretty gaycation. I was thinking I'd just hit up some art museums and have me a Monetcation. Maybe spend a week at a monastery having a praycation. I was going to go to Las Vegas to try and scare up a laycation, but if I'm being honest I have to admit it'd probably just turn into another buffetcation.

I suppose it really doesn't matter. With the airlines the way they are these days, anything I do is going to wind up being a delaycation.

I guess maybe I'll just stay home after all, but I'd still like to avoid using this horrible new word. Perhaps if I spend enough time on Fark I can spin it as a clichecation.

We'll have a reasonable rail system in the US again before that happens. Thats why I'm cool with rising gas prices. Maybe I can take the train on vacation instead of driving the car or flying when I want to go anywhere.

ya know, if you really have it that bad, maybe you should consider cutting back on some expenses. Like, say, dishing out $5 per month to vent on some obscure internets. That's what mankind invented walls for, and I mean actual, physical, the-stuff-that-makes-up-your-room walls. Yell at them, you'll have a bigger impact.

sluck604: We'll have a reasonable rail system in the US again before that happens.

This needs to happen. From Mexico's southern most city to Alaska and the Canadian territories.

We've been tearing up rail line instead of laying them down. A good rail system is needed in times of war just as a good highway system is. Hell even more important because it uses less energy to move more people.
