Wasn't Jason Castro kicked off of American Idol weeks ago? Why bring this up now?

/And I'll get flamed for this, but I never got the appeal of Jeff Buckley. He's a technically good singer, just seems so milquetoast to me.

Beucase Castro sang it again during the finale this past Wednesday night.

I liked Castro's version better.

K.D. Lang's version shows just how bad Buckley's is.

No, this is the hierarchy:

Buckley > Lang > Wainwright > Cohen > Cross

/probably missed a few..

Really? I like Cohen and all, but he makes Dylan sound like Pavoratti.

I still like these Swedish guys' version best.

I would like to hear an Alison Krauss version. She has the right voice for that song an I think it would be the best out there.

Dammit, Subby, you had to do this to me today, didn't ya? I just got back from visiting my grandpa on his deathbed, you heartless bastard!

I like Wainwright's version better than Buckley's, but both are great.

Who is Jason Castro?

My ex's mum would sing this song ALL the time as loud as she possibly could, for this, I absolutely hate Jeff Buckley and that song.

I just watched the other versions...

Jesus Christ Almighty is k.d. lang unattractive!

/Her version is way too 'hey, look at me!'
//she looked like a young shatner in drag
///she's got pipes, though

Ah, the never ending argument...

I'm sticking with Cale. Leonard's original version is too "spoken word" for me (but he still gets all the credit in the world for writing it in the first place), Buckley is too precious, and Rufus W goes too far with the Judy Garland shtick. k.d. lang does the "k.d. langTM" version (as she seem to do with almost everything, as talented as she is), and Allison Crowe is just kinda blah to my ears.

/2¢

I absolutely despise Wainwright's version. The last line of each verse is supposed to go down, such as Buckley's version. But Wainwright goes up, and it just sounds horrible. I'm not the greatest with music theory; my friend says he changes it to a major chord but I can't say for certain. But I cringe every time I hear him end a verse.

I personally find Buckley > Cohen > everyone else.

I never knew Cale did that version before Buckley. I'm shifting my admiration to Cale.

I agree. Every musician I know has been scolding me for years for not joining in with their worship of the guy. Grace was just ok in my book. I'm sure the fact he died young is a major factor in his popularity. If he was still alive, he probably be opening for Candlebox and Sugar Ray on a retro-90s tour.

I think most interpretations come directly out of the Cale version. At least that's what he'll tell you, and John Cale is not someone I would want to get into an argument with.

I could be mistaken about this, but I've kind of gotten the impression that Jeff was a really nice guy, a lot of other musicians had a great deal of respect for him and were quite fond of him, and have carried his torch since he died.

Buckley's version of Dylan's "Mama You've Been On My Mind" is an absolute winner. Unfortunately, I think you can only find it on the Grace Legacy Edition.

Oh, and for Hallelujah (although I've heard it too many times to still get the same enjoyment):

Has Tom Waits ever done this song?

Oh, and the Cale version is definitely the better. That version still gives goosebumps.

I like the Buckley version best, but it needs to end about a minute before it actually does.

Khoja 2008-05-24 06:13:32 PM
Although I would say Buckley's version is better, I give props for Wainwright's tribute song to Buckley, Memphis Skyline.

The Leonard Cohen song I've always wanted to hear Waits do is "I'm Your Man." I may be wrong, but I suspect that it would be all kinds of awesome.

DrBenway [TotalFark] 2008-05-24 06:34:12 PM
And not to take anything away from Jeff, but if you've never heard the music of his father, Tim Buckley, you're missing out. Tim also died entirely too young from a heroin overdose in 1975.

driver80 2008-05-24 07:13:03 PM
I nearly put an ax through my TV when I saw Bon Jovi do this song... the Jov pretty much "heavy breaths" through the entire tune to give all the 45-year old soccer moms watching him a glimmer of what he would be like in bed, which would be fine on one of his shiatty ballads- but not this one.

worst. cover. EVER.

/will amend to say worst cover ever attempted, non-American Idol division.
//please tell them to stop doing Imagine.

There's a female vocalist by the name of Angelou who does a very good version. It's on iTunes.

It really is the only one that surpasses the original.

Oh, you poor little dear. So anyone who doesn't share your tastes must be a snob, huh? Interesting. But not really very smart or classy, now that you mention it...

Kidding! (Well, unless you were being dead serious, which I'm assuming you weren't.) But it was an easy set-up, right?

I know that being happy-feel-goody about things isn't cool, but I kinda like all of the ones that have been posted/discussed here. Cale's version is amazing, Buckley's is amazing, and (blasphemy) Jason Castro actually made me tear up. He is such a fragile, typical, 20 year-old, spazzy kid and when nudged onto that stage with a song like that it really exposed how out of his element and amateur he is. The fact that he chose a Cohen song makes him 10 times cooler than any Idol ever.

I prefer this version, from 1844:
