Only if Michigan is given to her 100%, with Obama not even on the ballot, and you change the rules retroactively to fit it so she can claim the most.

In some quaint circles, presumably, these things are still called "cheating" or "sour grapes."

Actually the math according to Real Clear Politics is
Obama: 16,678,565
Clinton: 16,222,990

But, if you count Florida (where only Clinton campaigned)
Obama: 17,254,779
Clinton: 17,093,976

Only if you add in Michigan (where Obama was not even on the ballot) does Clinton finally get a lead.
Obama: 17,254,779
Clinton: 17,422,285

Unless you assume that the 238,168 of the "Uncommitted" votes go to Obama, since he was not on the ballot.
Obama: 17,492,947
Clinton: 17,422,285

And if we are going to be counting them, then we might as well also count the voter estimates from Caucus states (which do not release the number of voters that participate).
Obama: 17,827,031
Clinton: 17,646,147

Clinton must be using that "new math" to get her answer.

ManRay [TotalFark] 2008-05-23 09:33:06 AM
At least she can count on the support of Al Gore for her wacky scheme.

gilgigamesh: I don't think Clinton campaigned in Florida.

Actually she attended two fundraisers in Florida in January prior to the primary. And her campaign offices in Florida, rather than closing down after she signed the pledge not to campaign in Florida, split off to form "Florida for Hillary". After the primary the office closed down and many of the workers were absorbed back into the national organization.

She bent the rules on Florida and Michigan till they were screaming for mercy. And is now trying to break the rules to have a chance at winning.

My cousin and her family live down in Jacksonville, and she was telling me that Hillary was camped out right across the border in Georgia until the last possible second. Immediately past midnight she hopped the border and gave a great big speech to the Floridians for giving her such an important, big win.

Nevermind the thousands of people who stayed home in both Michigan and Florida after being told by the party (including Clinton) that their primaries would not count. I imagine a lot of college students and working folks figured that if there vote wasn't going to count, why spend the effort to get out of work or skip class. Face it, neither were fair elections and should not be counted as such.

Indeed. I was just pointing out that she didn't technically campaign there.

And is now trying to break the rules to have a chance at winning.

Break them, or change them to whatever it takes to get her the nomination. I like the football analogy: now that we are at game 12 in the season, she wants to count preseason games toward her record and claim victory.

Funny, they track everything except for the number that really matters.

Real. Clear.

So...IF we count FL and Michigan and IF Puerto Rico votes exactly as anticipated, she's on top?

Hell, If we count all the votes of the parallel universe "Obamia", Obama wins with an unassailable landslide majority.

But hey, they DON'T count. And neither do FL and MI.

I remember Dad saying something about wishing in one hand and crapping in the other. Might be relevant here.

Why would anyone include Caucus numbers? Its like saying a baseball team should win because they had more hits even thought they had fewer runs. It doesn't make any sense.

However, if you count London, Paris, and Berlin, Obama has more of the popular vote.

What? Under the DNC rules set up before the primary voting, London, Paris, and Berlin don't count?

Oh. Never mind then.

You just contradicted yourself.

Now then, according to your logic, Obama should win because he has more delegates ("runs") than Clinton even though she presumably has more votes ("hits").

No, THAT argument doesn't make any sense. And comparing baseball to the elections certainly doesn't make sense.

An INDIVIDUAL Caucused "voted" for a candidate.

If they played by the rules, it wouldn't be an issue. What's truly sad is that in this particular, drawn out race, if they did have their primaries when they were supposed to, they could have actually made a difference one way or the other.

I'm personally a fan of all primaries happening on the same day.

danlpoon 2008-05-23 11:54:35 AM
Let's analyze this empirically, shall we?

Here is a list of all the Obama campaign "negatives", hurdles, "dingers", Whatever you want to call them.

Obama's "Electability" Issues
Black
Inexperienced
Jr. State Senator.
Anti-gun
Weak on Crime
Unpatriotic wife
Muslim sounding name
Can't win swing voters
Ties to religious and racial extremists
supports Appeasement as defense policy
Weak on Israel
New Taxes for larger government during a recession
Smoker
No Military Experience
Lost California
Lost Florida
Lost Massachusetts
Lost Nevada
Lost New Jersey
Lost New York
Lost Ohio
Lost Pennsylvania
Lost Tennessee
Lost Texas
Lost West Virgina (ouch!)
Won't have the delegate count come Convention.
Doesn't have the popular vote majority

Now, Obama's Strengths:

Blacks will vote for him no matter what.
Noob-o-crats will vote for him IF they bother to vote. Which they won't.

Now, let's do McCain:

War Hero.
Lower taxes.
More freedom
Cheaper gas
more jobs
less government
End Daylight Savings Time
Rid us of the godless terra-cotta horde @ Rio Grande.
Married to beer cart girl.

McCain's "Issues"

-He's Methuzalah's God-parent
-He and GWB have never been seen in the same room together like Clark Kent and Superman
-He makes Leona Helmsley seem personable and warm.

Hillary simply has less baggage. She is the First Female President. Get used to it.

Puerto Rico gets to vote?

Do they have any delegates?

Headso 2008-05-23 11:55:34 AM
You gotta say those things to promote your candidate. although people who care enough about these numbers to even read something like that probably would know the real deal regarding Obama not being on the ballot in Michigan...

Mr. Anon 2008-05-23 11:55:47 AM
Since the national election is decided by popular vote, obviously we should use her fuzzy definition of the popular vote win to be the Democratic nominee.

I_Hate_Iowa: All you misogynists that don't want a woman to be president are probaly the same libs that are screaming for special right for gays.

No, we just think that if anyone else, man or woman had pulled what she has attempted, they would have been laughed out of the race. They don't because the Clintons have a lot of power still.

I also think that the media has had to treat both candidates with kid gloves at various points in this campaign. This has completely backfired and now both candidates can have claims of sexism and racism. Only Clinton seems to be working overtime and capitalizing on it in the most overt of ways (hard, working white voters, for example).

And what special rights. Right now, two straight women cannot get married either.

TheNewJesus 2008-05-23 11:56:17 AM
What about that whole "You need to follow the rules to have your vote counted" thing?

While I am tired of this, I suspect the entire drawn out thing is a ploy to get more people to register Democrat.

In terms of party politics, this is a good idea. In terms of needing 50 years to reverse the last 8 years of damage, this is a great thing. We need to swing to the other side, and stay there, for quite some time...

/JMO
//YMMV

Four states have yet to release their popular vote totals. No one knows who has the popular vote. The best PREDICTION is that Hillary has it.
