If you truly want to see a distinct society... go to Newfoundland.

Cod poutine kinda sucks though.

At first I thought the headline made no sense. Then I RTFA and realized that the headline perfectly sums up the story. Which makes no sense.

English is not a priority in Quebec... in fact it's against the law in certain circumstances.

Tastes Like Chicken: I feel this is as good a time as any. Is your handle meant to be a fart sound?

It's meant to be so many things - a fart sound; a belch sound; an epileptic named Brad; a Skinny Puppy reference; Funky Fresh MC rockin' the mic old school (b-rap); a needle pulling thread; the nickname of a miniature shetland pony skipping in a glade of daisies with an all-day sucker stuck to its head-fur shedding a single tear because some internet farker has pointed out that head-fur should really be called a "mane" but pony-brap doesn't like the cadence of the word mane and has similar problems preferring the term "assless chaps" despite its redundancy; a thing chavs say twice.

Pick and choose or come up with your own definition it's like the funnest game of Fictionary ever, only more pointless!

Hehe, I had a French roommate for a bit in the army. Huge George Michael and Wham fan. Swore up and down that he wasn't gay. I still have my doubts.

HA!

I've spent some time in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean which is about as Quebecois as you can get. They were all incredibly nice to use anglophones and slowed down to and helped us because we were taking time from our summer vacation to go and learn French.

And not only because I am Quebecois, but the situation with the budget is not at all the same that we have with intolerance.

I have no particular affinity for the Quebecois, but if nothing else I'll give moral support to any reasonably liberal-democratic secessionist movement just on general principle. I feel the same way about the SNP in Scotland (and I do have an affinity for that country, being an Ulster Scot myself if you trace it back far enough) even though on everything other than independence they represent that absolute worst of British authoritarian politics and have used the Scottish Parliament to implement such policies.

/anyone using the term "Scots-Irish" should have a bagpipe shoved up their arse

Maybe there is no good reason for us all to get along in pluralistic societies. Maybe the best way to insure peace and harmony is to have a segregated society.

Quebec is so lame, they're scared their culture will disappear if it isn't 'equal but better' than anybody else's.

As far as I'm concerned, no government can tell people what language their business signs must be in.
That is just so fuhking WRONG.

dtc etc

Surprised to find their brand of fascism in a country as cool as Canada.

Borders demarcate the authority of governments. They shouldn't be anything more than a meaningless line on the map for anyone not conducting government business. And I don't think anyone is seriously proposing otherwise in Quebec.

The people of Quebec can be quite cool, as is the euro feeling of the bigger cities.

It's the bureaucratic buffoonery that befuddles.

The Quebec government just came out with a study on the hijab (headscarf) it was published in part in the Montreal Gazette.

The report's conclusion: Calm the fark down and get over it.

"Let's finish with the head scarf, which has caused so much distress in the last few years," the reasonable accommodation commission's chairmen say in their report, parts of which The Gazette obtained last week.

It seems to almost make sense. gasp

They aren't telling anyone what language their sign must be in, they want the French to be predominant, there is a big difference.

Thing is that the 50% rule is there to remind business owner that we are a French community. It wasn't put in place because we want to be better, but because business in the western part of the province was going more and more exclusively English, which is IS wrong (take a serious look at other "French" community in Canada, and you'll see what they didn't want to happen over here)

Also, as for fascism, I don't think that this word means what you think it means.

koan 2008-05-22 05:54:08 PM
For one thing, there are a lot more quebeckers speaking english than canadian speaking french so... easy on the "Teh Are Teh Xenophobes!". Quebec's french is also full of english expressions and words, a lot more than the other way around.

Second, regarding immigration, they face a particular problem when so many immigrants chose english over french. How do you feel about those spanish speaking immigrants in the South who don't want to learn english? Yeah...

I know english canadian newspapers sell a lot more copies with alarmist articles on the big bad quebecker boogie men, but the canadian media is doing a disservice to the unity of Canada with their constant Quebec bashing.

Indeed. But instead of using THAT message in their headline, the province MSM picked up the opinion of "experts" like the racists asshat mayor of farking Herouxville.

Thats Quebec for you! We have no heroes (beside farking Celine) so we create them where we can!

Toronto Star
The commissioners are reported to analyze the majority angst as emanating from "self-doubt" and "fear of the Other," immigrants and religious minorities, including the long-established Orthodox Jews and fundamentalist Protestants.

Though Quebec has proportionately fewer immigrants (11.5 per cent of the population) than Ontario and B.C. (28 per cent each) or Alberta (16 per cent), the majority has a "strong feeling of insecurity for the survival of their culture" and language in North America.

Unlike their media image, Muslims - "who make up 2 per cent of the Quebec population, about 130,000 people" - are "massively francophone and highly educated," and are among the least devoutly religious of all immigrants" and "the least ghettoized."

Yet they, especially Arabs, along with blacks, are "the most touched by different forms of discrimination" in Quebec.

Bouchard and Taylor report that all immigrants face discrimination in the workplace, and represent only 3 per cent of the provincial public service, "one of the worst situations in North America."
----
Le Report de Bouchard-Taylor (new window)

The opposition in Québec's National Assembly (Mario Dumont, Pauline Marois) are so far united in criticizing the report for not doing enough to define a Québecois identity. When I say Québecois, it is as they use it: de souche, or pur laine but not including any black/jewish/anglophone/arab/etc. They don't like to use the province's name to describe its inhabitants

I think the whole process has been ridiculous, like most urban Quebeckers. However it is good that it is being talked about in the media, and it might shake-up the old crazy rural voters

Hello

See? Both language, only one has to be smaller than the other as to preserve the identity of the Province. There is a big difference between that and saying that they force you to use French. Business owners complaining about that rule usually have no interest in serving French customers (see : McGibbons).

Agreed. I've lived in other parts of the world where the "hatred" between different ethnicities is SO much worse.
