Works for me. Never heard the song before though.

Now there's a tune I haven't heard in a while.

I always preferred Slow Dog though.

Mmmmm, Tanya Donnelly. I still keep Star in regular rotation. Not a bad song on the album.

this type of thing may have gone over in the 50s-70s when people were stupid and still believed they were playing the instruments.. but we all know theres no amps or cords there...

This is a horrible, trying desperately to capture confused 14 year old girls who think they are hippies, crap. She is hot though.

Ah, the early 90's

I had this on a compilation called Generation X.

Lame & pandering, yes, but it had some good songs.

"King" was a great album as well... very under-rated.

Ah my early twenties... Used to think Donnely was hot in this video, not so much.

90's average hot is today's fugley.

Nope, still have a crush on her.

Man, that takes me straight back to college.

I haven't heard that song in years.

Loved Belly then, love Belly now.

Tonya Donnely's solo stuff is pretty damn good too...

Love Belly.

Wish Tanya Donnely's solo work was more similar in style. Too much of it is soft/acoustic compared to her Belly work.

This begs the question:

Tanya Donnelly or Juliana Hatfield?

Somehow I knew that was coming, so I already had my answer ready: Both.

I remember when she split from Throwing Muses and started Belly. She had a big hit on the radio, meanwhile Kristen Hersh kept touring as Throwing Muses. The only reason I know this is because the opener to that lame band Throwing Muses concert was THE FLAMING LIPS. Not only was is The Flaming Lips, but it was the "melt your face off" era of FL, circa "Hit To Death In The Future Head" with Jonathan Donahue and Dave Fridmann.

The clear winner: Tanya Donnely. She made money a bit of money and cemented herself as a 90's footnote. Meanwhile Kristen Hersh tried to follow one of the best bands in the world, and one of the top-10 blistering rock concerts of the 90's.

What sucks is the songs that I listened to in college, and will remind me of mt college experience have nothing to do with my generation. For the most part what was created sucked. Thanks music industry, thanks for nothing.

/I will stick with twin cities hip hop and buckethead

I've never gotten over my thing for 90's alterna-chicks.

I've hated this song for years. It's boring, she's funny looking, and the hook sounds like "Just Like Heaven" by the cure.

FAIL. Belly had a great album - Star (more than a one-hit wonder, subby) - but virtually disappeared after that. After Donnelly's departure from Throwing Muses, the band kept on and put out some great records: Limbo, Red Heaven and a self-titled CD. Hersh's solo efforts have been stellar. Both Sunny Border Blue and Learn to Sing Like a Star are excellent. What has Donnelly done lately?

I liked Belly. I liked some of Tanya Donnelys solo work also. Its not there was no talent there. I'd say just overlooked. Besides I don't think this was a band looking for hits as much as just doing what they wanted.

Many great bands never get heard. .... Indio ... The Katydids. Just because they never had a hit means nothing to me anyways. Its wasn't good for paying the bills for them though. Some good CDs still.

Great, now I have to go listen to Limbo for the first time in years. I loved that album.

Whiskey Tango Ghost is an overlooked album. Each solo album has been better than the last.

/And "both" was the correct answer to the Juliana/Tanya question.

Ah man, you're out of touch. Go pick up the last (self-titled) Throwing Muses album and a 50 Foot Wave album. Some free tracks are here - "Animal" and "Mercury" are the best of those. I've seen the Lips about five times live, and they're one of my favorite bands, but 50 Foot Wave blows them away as far as live musical intensity goes.

Wow, the 90's were a weird time musically. Don't get me wrong, I love the music from then (and especially the incredibly hot alterna-girls) but seriously, this song, which I did love back in the day, is a bot strange.

doctorwormwood 2008-05-20 02:25:34 PM
90s music is too laden with self concious bullshiat and self worship.. pretentious mysticality and spirituality "hey look how progressive and sensitive I am" I'd like to have Natalie Merchant, this chick, Joan Osbourne, and any other "Indie/Alternative" bands up against the wall and have them shot.. Most of the mainstream crap was geared towards Guru posturing and convincing themselves that they're the next Jesus here to advise us all on how to live properly..

Torc . I guess I am out of touch. Right on, I'll check it out. I was a huge fan of all the 4AD bands back in the day. I'd love to hear some good stuff from a band I used to love.

Neither.

As far talent among 90's female indie types, give me Tanya's step-sister. Kristen Hersh is a better songwriter and (at her peak, at least) a better singer.

If we're talking looks...Hope Sandoval (from Mazzy Star) all the way.

Hey, it's a catchy tune, and Tanya is hot. I saw Belly at a little venue in Boulder back in the day. Just walked in with my girlfriend and bought a ticket, $5 I believe. As Belly walked out on stage, this guy yells out incredibly loudly, "I love you, Tanya!"

She giggled, and said "You don't even know me" then they launched into the show. I loved her too at that moment.

Why don't you have a seat right over there? The seat titled "I like creepy little girls"

srsly though... Mazzy Star had good songs and nice melodies, but anyone can be a great singer with enough reverb.

She sounds great on The Jesus and Mary Chain's "Sometimes Always" with no reverb whatsoever.

tboucher: Geppetto was also a fun song on there

I heard Geppetto quite a bit on the radio down in Chapel Hill in the day. I tried several times to buy the album, but whenever I was in a record store, they were sold out of it. That's how popular a soundtrack to us Gen X'ers this must have been.

Now I've got to go get this.

meteorite: but seriously, this song, which I did love back in the day, is a bot strange.

Maybe so, but I figured the meaning of it was a woman talking to her boyfriend/husband saying "damn it, I'm going to have your baby...You better respect me."

"Feed the Tree" always seemed to be "feeding the tree of life" from a woman's perspective talking to a guy who was rather uncommitted.

I could be entirely wrong.

That's just my interpretation. "Silver baby come to me..." - I get images of a couple growing old together with gray hair.

/should have never been an English major...

eh, I'd take the worst offenders of the early/mid-90s over what came before and after. It was nice to see bands that would've otherwise languished in obscurity a few years early getting at least one hit.

I kinda get the impression that doctorwormwood is an old-fashioned guy when it comes to the ladies... seems awfully het up over a few lousy songs. There's certainly been worse.
