Meh, too much noise, wayyyy too much cymbal.

Why settle for a cover when you can have the real thang:

A very young Zakk Wylde.

I saw him play back then. He became my favorite guitarist then and remains to this day. He's a lot more diverse than you might think.

that sucked

Forgot what he looked like before the 'roids.

I'm LOLing at the meager gig, considering how big he's become now. Was he co-headlining with a Puppet Show? [Actually it just got to the guitar solo, which is, in the terminology of that era, totally rad and gnarly.]

Also, looking at the bassist I'm so glad the leotard-acceptability era of metal has died. May it never ressurect.

The video says it's at a guitar clinic. Somewhere in that stripmall is a guitar store of some sorts.

Thanks for the link though, great song and it was cool to hear Zakk Wylde do it.

Zakk is awesome. That is all.

So do I but that sucked.

Zakk Wylde isn't good enough to carry Billy Gibbons' guitar case.

...and I like Zakk Wylde.

It's just that Billy Gibbons is that good.

But don't let me (another lame guitarist) hijack this thread from the bassists. Happy B-Day Dusty.

Wait... it's Dusty Hill's birthday, and we get someone covering a ZZ Top song?

FAIL2

I f*cking despise Zakk Wylde over-playing POS overrated lame guitar shenanigans sub-par suckage crap guitar sound.

Tush is not the only song that hack ruins.

I saw some video of him with Ozzy butchering War Pigs.

He constantly does that annoying fretted "waahh" thing in between chords. He can not play a single groove or phrase without sticking that dumb lick in there somewhere.

If my hairy ass had a sound--it would be Zakk's guitar playing.

/I have heard he is a total pro
// I also heard he is VERY generous with his many fans

How is Zakk's guitar playing overrated? He is an excellent guitarist. Very technical, knowledgeable, and just plain awesome.

I'm talking about that hideous sound he ALWAYS makes when he plays chords or riffs. He can never simply lay into a groove,he always puts that stupid "weeeee" lick in his phrases. It is really obvious and annoying when he is playing Sabbath tunes.

I pretty much despise most modern guitarists and bassists anyway.

Tone and technique and what I call overall musical integrity have been lacking in mainstream music for quite some time.

I say a lot of bad stuff about Dimebag too and I am a musician from Dallas and as you can guess--my asshole opinions give me much grief here.

Dimebag/Pantera is sacred sh*t here in Texas.

He might have drawn more people if he didn't get second billing to the puppet show.

Tonight, the House of Blinds. Tomorrow, WAFFLE HOUSE!

Please tell me you're not a musician.

its a pinch harmonic, its not hideous its badass, and he wants to sound like your hairy ass, cuz hairy asses are manly, and Zakk Wylde is all that is man. Not to mention hes one of the most technical guitarists in the genre today, if not in any genre. if you cant get past ONE sound hes making your missing the whole picture

"....and I am a musician from Dallas...."

I clearly stated this above.
I also clearly admitted being an ASSHOLE too.

On the outside wall of the studio where my band records/rehearses is a giant memorial painting of Darrel. He was a frequent tenant of this studio in Dallas. So was the band Drowning Pool who were in the downstairs room just below mine. I mean NO disrespect to either of those bands who both suffered tragic losses.

I simply am very harshly critical of modern style guitarists and bassists. I disdain their tones mostly and am less than impressed with their technique.

I reserve my harshest scorn for current methods of singers and worst--the dreadful manner in which they are recorded.

Hey, who else is going to drag you guys out of your puddle of vomit in the parking lot....
If we let you get run over, we'd have to break in a new guy for saturday night, don't need the hassle.

It's all about context. Any rock/metal guitarist with a shred of technicality can and does use the pinch harmonic. EVH, Dime, even Marc Rizzo abuses the pinch harmonic, but the difference is in the context.

Doing it every three notes for the hell of it does make it gimmicky. Now, using it in a riff like "Mama, I'm Coming Home" or "Cemetary Gates" adds color and flavor to the riff. But like any other ingredient, too much will just kill the taste.

Its not that you're an asshole thats disturbing, it's that you're a goddamn moron.

The fail is strong with this one.

craigdamage 2008-05-20 05:17:27 PM
...please list my "moronic" statements.

A moron is somebody who is oblivious to their own ignorance.

My OPINIONS were clearly generated from profound familiarity of a type of guitar methodology I strongly disdain.

I also recall complimenting him for being a "pro" and "generous" guy....or maybe you missed that part?

craigdamage 2008-05-20 05:25:42 PM
....my only moron-ism is failing to use the term "pinched harmonic"
as would have been correct usage I suppose. Instead I sounded like a TARD when I said "Weeee" as to emulate the sound he makes.

After all...I am just a dumb bass player infuriated that this thread is about an embarrassingly over-rated guitar player instead of the great Dusty Hill.

btw----what is that palm slapped muted hammer-on thingy at the beginning of VH "Mean Streets" ...is that also considered as "pinched harmonics"?

Burping Bacon Bits 2008-05-21 03:05:06 AM
That gig wasn't a gig as much as it was a jam and a guitar clinic for guitarists/fans in promotion or sponsored by a guitar store.

He did one around that time in Houston and they actually gave away a Zakk Wylde model guitar. He jammed on a bigger stage. Nuno Bettencourt had a clinic at the same store but it was strictly a clinic and took place inside.

That sound and pinch are pretty much his signature sound. Wah wah wah. I don't really think he got enough credit for No Rest for the Wicked. I think that album pretty much revived Ozzy Osbourne (in the modern scene). His guitar tone and sound played a big part in that in my humble opinion.
