Hey, I love bashing Metallica but, the KROQ Weenie Roast is a big deal.

Guess who's going to be the biggest weener there?

Don't know the whole situation, but apparently The Mars Volta played at the KROQ Weenie Roast a couple of years ago and was very mad at the crowd and/or promoters of the festival so much that they decided not to play a 40 minute pre-planned setlist. Instead the band just played a 40 minute improv jam that the guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez named on the spot, "Abortion: The Other White Meat". It can be found online in some places. Its a good listen if you got the patience.

Let's check the band list...
Pennywise, the Offspring, Rise Against...yup, Selloutica sounds like a good fit.

Did Hot Topic sponsor this show?

Yup. Subby's retarded. Like the real kind of retarded, not the internet insult kind of retarded. I know this because only a real retard would consider this gig not a big deal.

Yeah I know. I know every time I create something and not only do people copy it (which I can live with) but then they find a way to make it available all over the world for free at a click of a button and nobody is doing a damn thing about it I just laugh about it and say "fark it, man, Ive already made enough money, I'm not entitled to the benefits of my product anymore."

Yeah, that guy's a douche.

Its not a question of money. Its more a question of artistry. Like, whats more important to him? The fans getting the music or him making money? If a musician chooses money over fans, then he deserves to have his music stolen.

I might have read it wrong, but to me the headline isn't suggesting that the Weenie Roast isn't a big deal, but is instead suggesting that Metallica is now headlining the type of show that they used to mock and criticize.

There's some cool video on youtube of the surprise show Metallica played at the Wiltern on Wednesday to warm up for the Roast...

I watched the live feed on KROQ's website. I was pleasantly surprised.

James has more growl in his voice and did far less of the annoying "YO HOOooOOooOOOO" crap that he did in the 90's especially at the end of "Sad But True".

Kirk wore a leather vest in a nod to his Kill Em All stage garb.

They played the half-time bridge in "Battery", which they haven't done in years.

Kirk has been praticing, even though he still keeps farking up the "One" solo. But all around, his rhythm playing and his solos which have been sloppy in the last few years sounded pretty tight.

Even Rob, whom I LOVE as a bassist but doesn't seem to fit in Metallica has been working on his weak vocals. He still plays it safe with the basslines and fills. At least jason improvised all over the place. Which is odd, because Rob is a better bassist.

And Lars, well Lars was Lars.

But all in all, I was left feelig hopeful after watching this show.

I've heard of the KROQ WeenieRoast before and I don't live in the area. I'm aware it's a big yearly concert festival type thing that is pretty popular. I'll give the subby the benefit of the doubt though and assume he/she just saw the name and assumed it was something pathetic like it sounds to be.

Wait, were all the outlets for legally obtaining music unavailable? Sorry, your argument makes no sense. Nobody was having trouble finding legal distribution. So the fans weren't being blocked from obtaining the music legally except by their own greed.

Metallica had major cred to lose sometime this century? And I missed it?

Who are you, Lars? A record executive? If anything, file sharing has helped them. More people are willing to buy a record they can listen to first. If Metallica were still the media giants they once were, I may be able to see a point to your argument (although, I would still disagree). If their last few records have taught the public anything, its that you should listen to the crap before you go and buy it.

Back to my original point, in that Boobies I made, if Metallica is more concerned about making money than getting fans, then they deserve to have their album stolen. It doesn't only apply to Metallica, but to all musicians. A band's number one priority is to entertain. And if they're not entertaining, then they don't deserve to make money.

flecsrogar: If anything, file sharing has helped them.

Your "Boobies" was "fans getting their music" not "getting new fans," so I stand by my point. Plus, are you trying to tell me that once you've downloaded and approved the record you're going to go buy the legitimate copy? BS.

In any case, a band like Metallica doesn't need file sharing to get help. Their brand has already been established and they aren't struggling to reach an audience. So, loyal fans can sustain them if they paid for their music.

Smaller bands without as much presence undoubtedly benefit from file sharing in the beginning stages of their career. But that argument doesn't carry across the board.

What? People have to pay for things that other people made? That's unthinkable!

That aside, people are still bashing Metallica over Napster? You'd think that most of the people that were actually affected by Napster shutting down would be out of High School and College and wouldn't be biatching about a measly $10 for a CD nowadays.

Record stores in a major market. Suburban CD stores still sell for 14.99 and up, but I can usually find what I'm looking for here for between 9 and 11 bucks brand new.

I can't believe they sued Napster! Did you guys hear about that? It's the worst thing that has ever happened in the world ever.

Just curious but does anyone know if they have started comparing their next album to "Master of Puppets" yet?

I haven't been paying attention & I need to fill in my score card.
