How come it took until 1982 to invent 80's music?

/oh, the things I would have done to the javelin girls from the "Flesh + Blood" album

Clicked link expecting to become infected with an earworm, but luckily I had never heard this song before. Part of me wishes I still hadn't.

No one's ever heard of Kraftwerk? They were doing 80's music back in the late 70's.

Awesome song. Retarded video. Could people just not dance in the 80's? I guess that's what makes the Rick Roll so bad--nobody can dance (but at least one of them can do back flips).

And, of course, there's always this version (new window) of the song. Better IMHO.

"Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Bob Harris."
"Thanks. This is hard."

Damn. I prefer their version too, but I'd never seen the video. That was outstanding. Thank you ;)

Oh, jeez... of all the great Roxy Music clips out there, this is the one that gets a greenlight? Very bitter-sweet...

Is there such a thing as EAR bleach?

/Listened for 30 seconds to remind myself that I truly DID hate this song back then.

Now with linky goodness. And Brass in Pocket bonus goodness, too. Can this be a Scarlett thread now?

I hate 80s music, but "Avalon" is terrific. Not sure how I reconcile those two opinions.

God, what a great band.

gotta love the idiotic headline
how in the hell did More Than This invent 80's music?

that being said, it was a very good album and commercial success
awesome live tour that year- musicianship that has long since left the building
where popular music is concerned

/hates sweeping generalizations
//particularly those without merit or sense

I have a version of this song with over-driven guitars and no synth. I guess it was the version of the song Bryan wanted on the album.

Looking forward to Roxy Music's new album coming out this year, the first with Eno since the early 70's. But I also expect to be disappointed - these things are almost never as cool as you'd like them to be.

That album should be coming out at about the same time as Chinese Democracy.

I swear you were gonna be a cheeky monkey, and put the link to Bill Murray's character's version of "more than this" from "Lost in Translation".

But you didn't.
And I was disappointed.
Cuz wow, that cover was bland and boring and early 00's/late-90's poppified beyond belief.
[shakes head]

I'm going to listen to "For Your Pleasure" for some mind/ear bleach.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-05-19 02:46:46 PM
so, subby, what IS "80's Music" anyway? hmmm?
I don't think it can be pinned down to one specific genre or style... there were many different kinds:
Pop
Post-Punk
Punk
Rock
Hair Metal
Post-Hair Metal [GNR]
Third World Pop/Rock [Peter Gabriel / Paul Simon]
Blatantly cheesey pop
Crooner ballads
Techno / Dance
Jazz Rock
progressive rock
Synth Rock

etc. etc.

Who knows? I admit I submitted this, last night around 5 AM probably or so, who can remember after 5 vodka shots and untold beers and constant kind bud smoking. I was surprised to see it today, I sure don't remember the submission.

Don't overthink headlines on Fark. Remember your source material.

that song may not have invented 80s music but Brian Ferry set the "look" of many bands with the singers wearing suits
/plus he was hitting it with Jerry Hall when she was younger and hotter than when Mick did

It's on tape(r-r) right now. I got a friend who can convert it. I'll try to get that this week for you.

Okay, after sulking for awhile, I'm back. And I have treats (and, more importantly, treatments):

Ladytron
Do The Strand
Editions of You
In Every Dream Home A Heartache -- note Eno screwing with Phil Manzanera's guitar solo like crazy
Song For Europe
If It Takes All Night (John Wetton on bass)
Out Of The Blue -- This is the tour I saw them on, and it was the only time I ever did angel dust. Eddie Jobson's violin solo gave me the freak-out.
The In Crowd
A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall
Scariest Bryan Ferry video ever: What Goes On -- the beard is too weird
Rare Brian Eno live performance from '05 with guitarist Nitin Sawhney: Prophesy -- the DVD this is from is great, I might add (Eno just turned 60 last week, by the way)

Anyway, knock yourselves out. And don't say I never did anything nice for you.

Fixed that for both of you.

And now for my link - Roxy does Neil (pops) No Paul on drums, but Phil and Andy show their chops. Plus it's a great tribute to Neil and Crazy Horse.

/Saw them in 75 (fark I'm old)

The tune that invented '80s music:

Well, except that Roxy Music had a warm and organic sound albeit slick and clean but very lush and full.

When people refer to the "80s sound" they usually mean that way too sterile and bright tone with dreadful digital "gated" reverb and way too clinical over-produced hideous sound. Saxophones and drums suffered the worst in the 80s. Synth voices were for the most part wretched (thanks to the Yamaha DX7) and guitar and basses were not much better. (the British guitar and bass sound from the 80s was kinda cool I think)

I do think that Avalon is the most mediocre album by Roxy Music but yet is one of the finest records released in the 80s.

ah... songs from when Roxy Music was actually relevant!

Yeah, that is a good one. I've also got a couple of old vinyl bootlegs, too: "Champagne and Novocaine" and a double live of that show in Sweden that there's clips from on YouTube -- I think a couple of the ones I linked, maybe.

THIS.

Viva! is easily in my top 5 of top live albums of the 70's.

[sigh] if only they had included "for your pleasure" on it as well.... but they ran out of space...
[would rather have "FYP" on there than "the bogus man"... i think the studio version "the bogus man" is about 3x as better as the live version on "viva!", but that's just my humble opinion.]
oh and i also wished that "the thrill of it all" was on there as well, but hey you can't have everything...
