lolcats were amusing until the cat speak in the captions evolved to be completely retarded and almost impossible to decipher.

Lolcat captions are nothing.

Should I be frightened that I can read something as normally incomprehensable as leet speak no matter which way its oriented, upside-down, sideways, etc, without even so much as pausing?

Welcome to this new generation's corruption of the english language. The sad part is now the literate and illiterate will be indistinguishable because the morons who couldn't graduate high school, and the tech-savvy college kids will both be using acronyms, and the spelling words like "could" will become "cud" even though that is already a word. Ijuts all.

Uh, "new generations"? I beg to differ, this began in the early 80's my friend.

You guys take the internet way too seriously.

Contrary to popular belief, the internet is not and never has been
"serious business".

If you had this kind of belief when you first connected to this panoply of human culture and ideas (which sometimes includes nonsensical humor), then you were obviously misinformed and ignorant of its nature.

Reason #4234 to move to San Francisco: internet culture is just culture there, materialized in the real world.

Love it!

(Internet culture is becoming just culture here in Vancouver too. Yesterday I was on the bus with two old ladies - white hair, 1960s style glasses, etc. - talking about how they're totally addicted to Twitter.)

Wouldn't it have been better if they thought of something original first and then painted that?

I mean, they had the whole wall to work with...

Like "Building cat is watching you transportate ..." ..or whatever...

Nah. I like it better as an homage to Invisible Bike cat. That one is my all time fave.

Also, the WWW is not the internet. Neither is AOL. Cope.

Je5tEr Uh, "new generations"? I beg to differ, this began in the early 80's my friend.

Perhaps, but it did not really proliferate prior to the advent of the internet, instant messaging, cell phones and text messages. I grant you that graffiti and shorthand have been around much longer though. Regardless, I don't see any reversal of the trend in the short term...a new language is evolving. Meanwhile, I continue to crush junior level competition in business communication and credibility, so it's fine by me if they wish to continue down their path.

I rephrase

The internet in its current form has never been serious business. Sharing stupid humor, socializing, and entertainment is what it's been about since it became popular in the 90's. That and... less savory things.

Sure if you want to nitpick, you're right. But it's not as serious as that anymore.

I've always suspected that the cats in question are offended by our assumption that they can't speak proper English. I can easily see dogs having such poor grammar and spelling, but cats always seemed much more elitist than that.

it began before that, sure a new form of it began with the intarweb and sms, but there has been for generations "dialects" of english that are not considered proper even before the 80s. Mark Twain even wrote something on this and the movement that he observed in his time to make words easier to spell. His rant was largely a laughing point, by design, but it applies to this day.
