(Slate) Interesting Pop songs are getting far wordier than they used to be: six songs on the top 10 for the week of Feb. 2, 2008 have more than 500 words in them. On the other hand, "Summertime" by George Gershwin has 92 words in it   (slate.com) divider line 37

It's a conspiracy to make next years new version of "Don't Forget The Lyrics" harder.

But, 450 of those are baby.

Your humbling fact for the day: Booker T Jones was in high school when he recorded Green Onions for Stax. On his summer break, waiting to enter 11th grade, seventeen years old. Seventeen flippin' years old, and he lays down maybe the most recognizable organ riff in R&B history.

/that's badass

ne2d: Really don't mind if you sit this one out...

The word count I got on that song is 1,447 words. According to the ITunes Music Store, "Thick As a Brick" clocks in at 43:50 (if you combine parts 1 and 2). The Chris Brown and T-Pain song mentioned has 742 words, and it's 4:13.

So if we round "Thick As A Brick" up to 44 minutes, that's 32.9 words a minute. "Kiss Kiss", rounded down to 4 minutes, works out to 185.5 WPM.

/not a big fan of either artist BTW

My favorite Gershwin lyrics:

Me and my girl, we got this relationship
I love her so bad, but she treats me like shiat
I'm locked down like a penitentiary
She spreads her lovin all over and when she gets home,
There's none left for me

TheHopeDiamond 2008-05-18 03:33:06 PM
The English language is staggeringly deep; complex thoughts can be put across with minimalistic grace by a person well-acquainted with its use.

The problem is, these "lyricists" have only a rudimentary grasp of English; they honestly do need to spend 20 words describing a shade of green that someone with wit could cover in 3.

Of course, that would turn lyrics back into (fake shudder) poetry, so I can see where that concept terrifies the world at large.

exorcist green
lime green
neon green
green green
bright green
light green
dark green
yellowish green

hey! under three words

i dont mind a song that has over 500 words, they are just harder to sing whilst in the shower... but if the song sucks then why even bother? Instrumental songs are a lot better at evoking emotion than songs.
"my dog died, i cried" hmmmm im guessing the lyricist is sad, but im not sad. This song really sucks...

Neuroscientists believe that the brain uses a different system to store and process music than it does words.

And so my at-work music selections tend to include a lot of stuff like Allman Brothers Band tunes which have long instrumental breaks if they aren't purely instrumental.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-05-18 08:25:57 PM
just because you use more words in your songs, doesn't mean that they're any more meaning-full or emotional or something/anything than a song with less words.

Sometimes,
in the words of a jazz great [i can't remember who]
"Less is more."

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-05-18 08:33:13 PM
Here's one of the most meaningful/emotional rock song lyrics that i can think of right now: [not to mention the heart-wrenching way Richard Manuel sings it]

"Tears of Rage" by the Band, lyrics by Dylan.

We carried you in our arms on Independence Day
And now you'd throw us all aside and put us all away
Oh, what dear daughter 'neath the sun could treat a father so?
To wait upon him hand and foot and always tell him "No"

(Chorus:)
Tears of rage, tears of grief
Why must I always be the thief?
Come to me now, you know we're so low
And life is brief

It was all very painless
When you went out to receive
All that false instruction
Which we never could believe
And now the heart is filled with gold
As if it was a purse
But, oh, what kind of love is this
Which goes from bad to worse?

(Chorus)

We pointed you the way to go
And scratched your name in sand
Though you just thought it was nothing more
Than a place for you to stand
I want you to know that while we watched
You discovered no one would be true
And I myself was among
The ones who thought
It was just a childish thing to do

(Chorus)

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-05-18 08:34:09 PM
oh, and also...

i dunno, but i always thought that "it's the end of the world as we know it" by R.E.M. had a lot of words in it...
anybody know the wordcount on that one?

How about the other side of the coin; Band of Horses, Is There a Ghost:

FTS:
I could sleep when I lived alone, Is there a ghost in my house?

Thats it. 14 words.

These lyrics have a depth to them that really reaches into my heart and soul:

Hillary Duff, "Why Not"

You act like you don't know me
When you see me on the street
You're makin' like
i turn you off
When I know you
think I'm sweet

It don't have to be like that
I guess you're insecure
If you say what's on your mind
I might answer 'Sure'

So I walk a little slower
And I try to catch your eye
Sometimes, it's so hard to see
The good things passing by

There may never be a sign
NO flashing neon light
Telling you to make your move
Or when the time is right

[ CHORUS: ]
Why not
Take a crazy chance
Why not
Do a crazy dance
If you lose the moment
You might lose a lot
So... why not
Why not

You always dress in yellow
When you wanna dress in gold
Instead of listening
to your heart
You do just what you're told

You keep waiting where you are
For what, you'll never know
Let's just get into your car
And go, baby, go

[ CHORUS ]

Oh... oh
I could be the one
for you
Oh... yeah
Maybe yes,
maybe no
Oh... oh
It could be the thing to do
What I'm saying is
You gotta let me know

You'll never get
to heaven or even
to L.A.
If you don't
believe theres a
way
Why not
Take a star from the sky
Why not
Spread your wings and fly
It might take a little
And it might take a lot
But... why not
Why not

/what the hell is "you always dress in yellow when you wanna dress in gold" supposed to mean anyway?
//seriously, wtf
