It's Florida.

They deserve all abuse they get.

I RTFA. If not for the magic trick, why was he fired?

"It really made me stop and think," Whaley said of the versions of Piculas' firing that made the Web. "Because I go to the Internet for information, say, to look at information on medication I'm taking. Now I'll be more careful.

"You really can't count on every Web site ... because you're likely to get information that isn't true," she said.

FTFA: The report noted that district officials said "it wasn't just the wizardry," and that Piculas "had other performance issues" such as failing to follow the class lesson plan.

Oh.... so wizardry and failing to follow the class lesson plan. Well, that grounds for a firing...

chaosweaver 2008-05-18 11:22:48 AM
is it just me, or is this reminiscent of that bikini boat tour teacher? Far flung stories that catch all the media, leaving the real reasons covered in dust in the shadows.

Either that, or he really is a wizard.

This man deserves a HERO tag.

- School is generally stupid, boring and rote. He wanted to liven it up a little.

- He knows how to do magic tricks.

- He has sense enough to throw out a big ol' WTF! over things that need one.

I like him.

FTFA: "I've been called the worst things I've been called as a School Board member," said Whaley, who has received as many as 50 angry calls and e-mails a day from all over the country. "I got called an 'effing' idiot on my voice mail. ... I got called an incompetent turd."
...
"It really made me stop and think," Whaley said of the versions of Piculas' firing that made the Web. "Because I go to the Internet for information, say, to look at information on medication I'm taking. Now I'll be more careful.

If you're on a school board, and it takes someone calling you an "incompetent turd" to rethink your blind trust in the internets, then you are an incompetent turd.

FTA: The report noted that district officials said "it wasn't just the wizardry," and that Piculas "had other performance issues" such as failing to follow the class lesson plan.

That means that he was creative in the class, and challenged his students to excel. There's no room for that kind of thinking in our public school system. The lessons plans are prepared by experts in child psychology (who are not tainted by having never spent time in a classroom) and teachers must not deviate from them. Otherwise, children will learn.

OK...lemme see if I've got this.
DRTFA.
He did the vanishing toothpick trick, which frightened some of the precious snowflakes, who told their parents. Parents got onto the supervisor. Supervisor calls teacher into office, says "You've been accused of wizardry. BTW, you're fired."

Teacher goes to local TV station, says "I lost my job as a teacher because I did this toothpick trick (demonstrates) and they accused me of wizardry!"
Story hits the intarwebz and BLAMMO! takes off and scatters like pollen.
Within a week, everyone is reminded that the stupid does indeed run deep in Florida.

Ex-teacher dude then says "Wow, I had no idea...this wasn't what I meant to happen...don't these people have lives?"

(facepalm)

Moral of the story:
You might want to think your cunning plan all the way through before implementing it, dork-brain.

revnron 2008-05-18 11:49:21 AM
I don't believe it states anywhere that the board denied that wizardry was one of the reasons for firing him. Inclusion of wizardry alone is enough to judge that turd as incompetent.

/just ask a competent turd.

In fact, assistant superintendent Renalia DuBose told the St. Petersburg Times, it wasn't the magic trick at all. Rather, the district had written reports from the principal and a teacher at Rushe Middle School detailing Piculas' use of profane language, his inability to control the class and his decision to put a student in charge - something the student's parent complained about.

Did nobody RTFA?

Apparently Subbie didn't, because it had nothing to do with the fired teacher's reaction.

I love how the guy who started it all.. the one who called a reporter and lied to the reporter and said he was fired fro wizardry.. is so shocked at the response. Now he ponders that his name will come up in a Google search and whether a future employer would hire him due to all this media bullsh*t.

Newsflash: you probably don't deserve to have a good job ever again. You're a liar.

You're assuming a lot. It could just mean he took 3 weeks to teach them addition instead of 1 because he was too busy telling jokes all the time. I had a teacher in high school who was repeatedly reprimanded for this.

revnron: I don't believe it states anywhere that the board denied that wizardry was one of the reasons for firing him.

This, in so many ways. Wizardry? Does the school nurse use leeches? Does the science department teach an Earthcentric vision of the universe? How about their treatment of them Christ-killing Joos? Is there a rack and Iron Maiden in the gym? Wizardry? Really? That's what you guys are going to stick with? In addition to all the other stuff about him being a shiatty teacher, and using profanity in the classroom and all, you still want to throw wizardry in there? Really? Ooooooooooooooooooooooookay.

Maybe we should wall the villagetown off and just let them be, like that movie, The Village
.

That's what they say now but by their own admission "wizardry" did play a part in their decision. Besides, who are you going to trust? The people who fired someone for being a wizard or the wizard?

yes but he was called to the principles office where the principle accused him of wizardry

the other points may be valid as well but still it is 2008 why would anyone be accused of wizardry outside of the third world

Still smells like there's some shenanigans going on.

If you're firing someone for legit reasons, you don't toss in "wizardry".

OTOH, if you're firing someone for retarded reasons (like "wizardry"), then even a Florida idiot is probably smart enough to know that wouldn't hold up under the scrutiny. Better to throw in some trumped up charges to make it *sound* legit.

ISTR exactly the same thing happening to teachers getting sacked for teaching evolution in class. "Oh, no, we're firing you because... uhmmmm... performance reasons! Yeah, that's the ticket!"

Stupid muggles.

This is a PERFECT example of why the USA does not, and hopefully will NEVER have a democracy.....mob rule.
Also, now we can confirm why hardly anyone watches that MSNBC
show Countdown with Keith whats-his-name.
Instead of doing some RESEARCH into the story, he went with spinning it to fit his only slanted liberal bias.
You should say a prayer to the WISDOM of our founding fathers who fought to prevent this country into becoming a democracy. Cooler heads are better than "mob rule".

"Perhaps the biggest hit was MSNBC's Countdown With Keith Olbermann, which deemed the Pasco County school district one of its three "Worst Persons in the World" for May 7.
"He did a magic trick in which he made a toothpick disappear. Then he got an urgent summons to a meeting at which the principal accused the teacher of, quote, wizardry. (In mocking voice) 'He turned me into a newt,' " Olbermann said in the broadcast, laughing. "Now, most of Florida is in the Eastern time zone. But apparently Land O'Lakes is one of those pockets that uses its own clock. Their time zone is apparently the Middle Ages."
