Hmmm.... didn't bother to RTFA, but have studies been done to make sure that there are no heavy metals or organics which might leech out of the rail cars and poison the water/fish?

Wow. This is such a unique and neat article. I have never heard of this type of thing being done before. Oh my goodness. I am astonished.

It's bad enough when the Yankees and their fans come to Maryland. Do we really need more New York trash?

destrip 2008-05-18 01:14:19 PM
Great. Just another excuse to turn our oceans into giant landfills for shiat we're too lazy to cut up and recycle.

The darned fish wouldn't need manmade reefs if commercial fishermen weren't fishing them to the brink of extinction.

Prudent fishing practices, not junk dumping, is the key here.

Jakevol2 2008-05-18 01:15:30 PM
Put simply, New Yorkers throw their trash in the ocean.

It's not really the New York drivers that are bad around here. Pennsylvania drivers NEVER seem know where they're going.

I thought it had been going on longer, but its pretty cool to think my back sweat and sneaker scuffs are helping the ocean be a better place.

Th's true but the subway cars have worked out quite well. We have been doing this for many years without incident.

Plus they make a great tourist destination.

rubi_con_man 2008-05-18 01:32:21 PM
The reason that subway cars work well is that the city effectively is burying the metal shell only. The subway systems here have refitting facilities like you would not believe, so anything that is rubber, or plastic is stripped. The Wiring is removed, and all that is left is metal. The Trucks (the wheels) and motors are all removed.

Some headlights can't be turned off while driving. I get a little discount on car insurance for having them. If you noticed the car, then they apparently worked.

All train compartments smell vaguely of shiat.
It gets so you don't mind it.
That's the worst thing that I can confess

They should try this with New Yorkers.

rubi_con_man: The Trucks (the wheels) and motors are all removed.

The trucks are also compatable with all models up to the ones that were bought in the mid-80s. Yes, subway cars from the postwar R-10 to the R-42 all used the same truck.

The model in the picture from TFA is an R-32. These were the first stainless steel cars used in large numbers by the NYCTA (and they never bought anything but stainless steel cars after that) They were nicknamed "Brightliners" for their stainless steel finish.

These were also the last to not originally come with air conditioning. A/C was retrofitted to the R-32s after their overhaul of 1989.

Yeah. To the tune of $8,000 per car. See what RTFA will do for you?

Exactly. They did something similar about a year ago in different parts of the Chesapeake Bay with big concrete chunks of the old Woodrow Wilson bridge. That seemed like it made sense because it was concrete. What I don't get however, is how they think those subway cars are such a great thing. According to the article it's good for about 40 years but it failed to mention what happens after 40 years. Also eventually all of those rusty peices becoming loose don't sound like such a good thing either.

/I'm not saying concrete is better. It just sounds better.

Usually you have to wait for beach week to get here before that starts to happen.

Decisions, decisions.

A) Throw shiat in the ocean and call it an "artificial reef".

B) Stop throwing shiat in the ocean that kills the natural reefs.

C) Profit.

The answer is always C.

Considering that they are putting these things where there are "NO natural reefs" then this is pretty much a

FAIL

You can't kill something that's not there.

Yes, we created a program involving dumping old traincars into the ocean on a whim. We asked environmentalists about it and they said "fark it, do what you want."

StarlingFive: They did this with tires once, and it was a environmental nightmare

The tires didn't work, because they were too light, and didn't stay on the bottom where they were dropped.
Waves and current shifted them around, and broke up the bundles.

Subway cars, no so much of a problem.

"These reefs provide quality habitat for marine life off our coast which benefits not only the environment but also local businesses," said Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan.

Sounds good....

Jeff Tinsman, Delaware's reef program coordinator, said a 600-car reef in that state's waters had increased the local fish population by 400 times, and boosted the number of angling trips to 13,000 a year from 300 before the reef was created.

Sounding better...

Any environmentally hazardous materials including PCBs and petroleum lubricants were removed from the cars by the MTA at a cost of $8,000 per car to comply with federal government regulations.

OH SNAP! Gotcha biatch!

Stupid idea.

I bet the changing currents shove the subway cars around just like they do the "tire reefs", scubbing the ocean floor clean of all plant life.

Have you ever seen the North Atlantic ocean floor?

There ain't a lot of plant life there.

Ooh, I wondered what I could do with all those large metal objects that I didn't know how to dispose of what I could help the local ecology with... I think I'll go "build a reef for fish" myself...

Exactly. Nice try to spin dumping into the oceans as beneficial to the local marine ecology. Wow.
