(Crooks & Liars) Dumbass If you thought the Republican party could make it through this election cycle without using the phrase "tar baby" to refer to Obama, you should have a word with Rep. Tom Davis   (crooksandliars.com) divider line 278

he's referring to immigration, not obama. is still dumb.

Arthur Jumbles [TotalFark] 2008-05-17 10:54:08 PM
Tar baby is a perfectly fine phrase.... I'm taking it back.

patrick767 [TotalFark] 2008-05-17 10:59:59 PM
While it's a dumb thing to say, it's usage is legitimate in the context.

Besides, it's not nearly as stupid as the Huckster making a joke about someone shooting at Obama.

Tom Davis said that?

Nothing to see here. Move along folks.

/the term is perfectly fine in this context.

This surprises me. He's a little crazy. A really nice guy, tho. His middle daughter used to be my best friend.

SwiftFox [TotalFark] 2008-05-17 11:57:14 PM
Wow, the Republican party can't afford to have such an attractive and successful African-American in the woodpile at this point in the election cycle...

carnifex2005 2008-05-18 12:02:22 AM
I can't wait for the day one of them uses the term "house negro".

I don't think this guy was trying to be racist, but who the hell uses the term "tar baby" in any context?

Ed Willy 2008-05-18 12:11:58 AM
The use of tar baby will increase if Romney's on the ticket.

This is a non-story.

Honestly, with all the real scandals and stupid things being said, something like this shouldn't see the light of day.

He's behind the curve. I saw an Xbox Live gamertag that was "Tar Baby Obama" or something like that months ago.

Hehe...I remember this from when I was a kid. It's a great word, and used in context. Methinks Subby doth protest too much.

What, a lie-filled headline, on my Fark? It's more likely than you think!

Ed Willy: For all yall illiterates out there, here's the origin of "tar baby"

You know, I really do agree, but pointing out that it's not racist because it was in an Uncle Remus story makes me chuckle...

Obama is black? Come onnnnnnnnnn. He's whiter than white bread.

redmond24 2008-05-18 12:24:42 AM
Hmm. I bet there is a good chance he knew EXACTLY what he was saying. In context, he was not calling Obama a tar baby at all. Seems like he was refering to immigration. But he knows that the liberal left will be up in arms and say 'omg racist'. That of course makes many swing-vote WASPs up in arms because it was okay in context. Name calling ensues. WASPs lean towards right (McCain) in November.

Two things can bring republicans out en masse to vote McCain in November. 1) Clinton on the ticket, 2) thin-skinned wacky liberals.

Now That's What I Call a Taco! 2008-05-18 12:25:08 AM
The fact you find this not offensive is exactly why it's so offensive.

This and especially the bold.

I do not know if I am going to enjoy or hate all the bits of racism precieved or imagined this fall.

Tabatha Static: What's everyone so upset about? There's no racist stereotype associated with the tar baby story...

Only if you see the tar baby and immediately think 'it's a black'. I mean, wtf, were they supposed to make it out of peanut butter or something? The story was originally by a black guy and was a tale much like Aesop's fables.

Dear Jerk 2008-05-18 12:28:21 AM
Note to Republicans: don't use terms like 'tar baby' 'nubianrdly' or 'brazil nuts'. You have a poor track record with blacks and others who believe in social justice, so just don't do it.

DarthBrooks [TotalFark] 2008-05-18 12:31:40 AM
Classic Uncle Remus stories of defiance and rebellion to the status quo are not allowed in the history-free, modern idiocracy.

Santayana was only half-right: those who cannot remember the past are not only condemned to repeat it, they're in the goddamn MAJORITY.

Shaggy_C 2008-05-18 12:32:45 AM
Dear Jerk: Note to Republicans: don't use terms like 'tar baby' 'nubianrdly' or 'brazil nuts'. You have a poor track record with blacks and others who believe in social justice, so just don't do it.

I prefer 'niggling'. It sounds even more racist.

Shaggy_C: The story was originally by a black guy and was a tale much like Aesop's fables.

Nah, it was written by a white guy imitating a black (former) slave. But you're right in that it was adapted from African folklore handed down by slaves in an oral tradition.

we_hates [TotalFark] 2008-05-18 12:34:09 AM
I'm more concerned with his mixing of metaphors. Thus, this issue is a tar baby for anyone who touches it, with land mines everywhere.

Hehe, that's why I said the story was by a black guy (it's a slave tale), but yeah it was a fatcat reconstruction white guy who actually wrote it down. :P

I am sure I did not make a left or right comment there. I enjoy it when people are called on blatant stuff but calling wolf every time someone makes a statement like in TFA or the boy thing just aggravates me. Call wolf enough times and people stop listening.

BTW when did Hillary become the right?

Tallgordon 2008-05-18 12:36:41 AM
But seriously, folks, this is great noose for Obama.

Prospero424 [TotalFark] 2008-05-18 12:37:02 AM
And that's really the reason that Uncle Remus stories aren't popular anymore: reading stories recreated during reconstruction by rich white men in the voice of a caricature of a former slave can be kind of disturbing if you stop to think about it.

/still likes "Song of the South", but understands why many don't.

I'm pretty sure Republicans hate Lincoln. You never hear the modern Repubs bringing up his name when talking about 'great Republicans'. He doesn't jive with the states' rights agenda just like Dems don't think George Wallace is something to be proud of.

Well, I don't really consider Hillary a real opponent at this point so I assume most Obama detractors are coming from the right :P And they have been the ones pumping up the "Racist Pastor" and Farrakhan crap for months. Every day it's "Obama is a RACIST". No real evidence, but that's never a prerequisite for accusations I suppose. I assume you're talking about the same kind of crap coming from the left and that's what you're "looking forward to".

See, this is why I can't wait for October. You see, when Democrats get too excited and make a racial slip-up, they give the wrong kind of compliment (articulate, clean); or they compare two successful African-Americans with no other direct connection except that they are African Americans with similar professions.

When Republicans get too excited and make a racial slip-up, they reference 100 year old Jim Crow expressions or attend neo-Nazi rallies.
