Thank god goodness Watterson denied this asshat. It's a cartoon strip. That's all. Sheesh.

What a bunch of losers. Next thing you know, they'll be telling us that Family Circus is secretly religious.

HM - making up stories about yourself living another life where you're perfect and everything is good, talking to imaginary friends, lying to authority to get out of responsibility, generally being annoying...

Nope. Can't see how that would relate to Christianity at all.

This reminds me of the old saying. When all you have are a hammer and nails, the whole world starts to look like Christ's wrists.

So, when Garfield got lasagna from Jon that was actually the body of Christ?

I seem to remember a post in a thread recently about how terrible it is that people would make fun of the Muslim faith, and some guy was saying that if they were poking fun at the Christian faith, there would be no uproar.

If anyone can find that thread and post it here, I would sure appreciate it.

best response ever, from this thread:

Hollie Maea:

Is this the thread where all the evangelical atheists show up and biatch and moan about how the list is missing various religious texts? Look, we get it: your mom made you go to sunday school when you were a kid and you hated it. Get over it.

Will add to this - I'm not suggesting there should be an uproar. Most Christians that I know easily dismiss those who make fun of Christianity and don't give them a second thought. I just find the hypocrisy to be telling.

i cant believe something like that was put in my hometown newspaper. The Morning Call is a very good newspaper believe it or not. I have lost so much respect for them for putting that crap in there.

On the other hand, the comic "B.C." was blatantly Christian without apology. I typed an interview with Johnny Hart years ago. Cool old guy, but hardcore Christian, yeah.

In fact several Calvin and Hobbes strips openly question the basis of most religions.

Yeah, pretty much. Calvin pissing on things is moronic, but him kneeling before a crucifix is farking retarded (no offense to retards). Calvin struck me as a character without religion, not a pious whippersnapper.

JeffTL 2008-05-18 01:11:33 AM
You have to admit that apparently naming a character after one of the most noteworthy Christan theologians is going to draw some religious speculation. Especially when paired with a contemporary philosopher to this theologian, to clarify the reference.

Kind of like if Bart Simpson were Barth Simpson, with a silent H, and he named his skateboard after Wittgenstein.

Anyone ever seen the conspiracy theory that the original Star Trek was all about Catholicism? It's a hoot. (Do your own search. I'm too busy/lazy!) "James Tiberius Kirk": "James," an apostle. "Tiberius," a Roman ruler. "Kirk," church.

There's even more to it. It's a wacky theory. Some people are just lost in the crazies!

Maybe an apostate or heretical religion, what with all the grandpa ghosts and Not Me spirits. Bill Keane is a necromancer.

If Christians (and I am one) hadn't historically:

1. Tried to force others to be Christians,
2. Tried to force those who refused to be Christians to at least ACT like Chrsitians and follow their book's precepts, and
3. Then had major visible members of their group be giant farking hypocrites...

Maybe there wouldn't be so much anti-Christian bias, eh?

I think we've kind of earned it.

You could probably find deep philosophical meaning in the list of ingredients for your corn flakes if you start with your conclusions and work backwards like this turd does.

Reminds me of an English professor I had. To her EVERY piece of English fiction could best be interpreted through a Freudian lens. By the end of the semester were were literally groaning when ever she started to interpret. No character ever used a gun in anything other than a phallic context. Quite maddening.

Christian values -- and I don't mean this in the current Republican sense, but rather as religiously-influence historical trends in Western Culture since the middle ages -- are rather taken for granted in the West, much as fish take water for granted.

Among them -- the weakest may turn out to be the greatest, better to be a good man than a powerful, turn the other cheek, do onto others, etc. (Are these values promoted in Islam and Judaism? Of course, because Christianity has two main ideological roots -- Judaism and Hellenicism.)

So it's not surprising that a minister might find Christian teachings in the works of artists who explored moral situations (Seuss and Watterson).

Were they deliberately Christian? I very much doubt it in the case of Watterson, and certainly not in the case of Seuss (a Jew - although, as I noted above, these same values are promoted in Judaism, which originated them in the West).

No, what the minister is calling "Christian" values are just general Western notions of morality, although they have their origins in religion.

/I am now ready for about 1000 flames, because I referred to religion in a vaguely positive way.

I read an interview with him once where he said it just wasn't possible to go after everyone using the image. I think it was on The Onion's AV Club, but I'm not sure.
