(2007) Pentagon memo describes how we're going to take out seven countries in five years, starting with Iraq, and then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and, finishing off, Iran." (82)

=====
"Seven countries in five years"
Wesley Clark's new memoir casts more light on the Bush administration's secret strategies for regime change in Iran and elsewhere.

Six weeks later, Clark returned to Washington to see the same general and inquired whether the plan to strike Iraq was still under consideration. The general's response was stunning:

"'Oh, it's worse than that,' he said, holding up a memo on his desk. 'Here's the paper from the Office of the Secretary of Defense [then Donald Rumsfeld] outlining the strategy. We're going to take out seven countries in five years.' And he named them, starting with Iraq and Syria and ending with Iran."

While Clark doesn't name the other four countries, he has mentioned in televised interviews that the hit list included Lebanon, Libya, Somalia and Sudan.

Three weeks after the 9/11 terror attacks, former U.S. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld established an official military objective of not only removing the Saddam Hussein regime by force but overturning the regime in Iran, as well as in Syria and four other countries in the Middle East, according to a document quoted extensively in then Undersecretary of Defence for Policy Douglas Feith's recently published account of the Iraq war decisions.

When this writer asked Feith after a recent public appearance which countries' names were deleted from the documents, he cited security reasons for the deletion. But when he was asked which of the six regimes on the Clark list were included in the Rumsfeld paper, he replied, "All of them."

Oh for gods sake. Its not rocket science. Just grow a pair and start strapping 20mm deck guns on some of these ships. Problem solved.

But nooooo, that might upset the UN or something.

uhhh dunno. maybe that the lower the temperatures the more pirates there seem to be?

tstoneman 2008-05-18 12:41:46 AM
Don't you see? Pirate cooling is just part of the Pirate warming cycle. And increase in pirates followed by cooling weather doesn't mean that Pirate warming isn't real.

JesseL [TotalFark] 2008-05-18 12:43:19 AM
Somebody (either private or a national navy) needs to start floating some pirate traps off Somalia, in the Caribbean, and around Indonesia. A few little ships that look like a nice little pleasure yachts; but with armor, hidden deck guns, and some well equipped SEAL types below decks.

phillydrifter 2008-05-18 12:43:28 AM
I don't understand why they continue to entertain pirates off the coast of Somalia. If they simply denied their existence the pirates would be no more, just like the 'war on (some) drugs' in the US. We shun drug use, proclaim it's wrong, and the problem just vanishes, right? Doesn't it do the same for you?

child_god 2008-05-18 12:43:29 AM
The thing that gets me is ...

How can a boat sneak up on another boat? Can't you see the other boat coming from miles away? Its the freaking wide open ocean. There are no buildings or trees or corners for the bad guys to hide behind. And why do you let them on your ship? Just duck down and shoot them as they come on board. You can have guns in international waters, right?

If someone tries to jump on my ship, he'll land face-down dead. I picture myself swinging around on ropes like Indiana Jones or Jack Sparrow, shooting pirates, them cartwheeling over the end of the boat screaming AAAAHHHHHH!!!! Me cutting down sails, which fall on the pirates, then I'll tie the sail to the anchor and drop it into the sea. I strike a match on the sail as it zips past and take a few puffs off my pipe as I watch them fly over the edge and into the deep blue sea. Standing with my foot on slain pirate, in a Captain Morgan stance, I mutter some witty one liner that concisely states my irritation at their arrogant attempt on my ship.

I mean, how hard can it be?

ecmoRandomNumbers [TotalFark] 2008-05-18 12:49:06 AM
I know I'm pointing out what should be painfully obvious, but here goes anyway...

The statistics of small numbers is a logical fallacy. April was cool. So what?

"They say that one in every 5 people on the planet is Chinese. I know that's false because I know tons of people and none of them is Chinese."

stirfrybry 2008-05-18 12:52:05 AM
The recent cooling is NOT inconsistent with the peer reviewed global pirate models. You might be able to point to a short term deviation from expected values, but that doesn't mean the pirate danger is any less real. It's simply being masked by some unknown factors we have yet to understand.
