McCain was saying we had to deal with Hamas as a governmental entity, since they were now in charge of Palestinianland. He didn't mean we should ask them what they want to stop attacking Israel, which is what 'some' would have us do.

Despite McCain not being able to remember...people on the internet can pull up ANYTHING from the past

C'mon that was two years ago. I'm sure he's changed his mind about that policy by now.

Why is it up to us to decide what "we" (actually the Israelis) give up in a dispute to which we are in no way a party?

Suddenly the POTUS having discussions with other world leaders is "appeasement", some sort of gift?

I think some world leaders would give US land to avoid having to talk to our (retarded) president.

Terrorist
(new window)

I would have to say that firing missles at civilians is an act of terrorism just as an act of terrorism would be, well, umm as firing missles at civilians.

For every Israel solider killed they make sure to kill a few Palestian civilians.

GOP, thank you for giving an Alzheimer's victim to run against in November!

This shiat is just getting started. McCain's flip-flops will make John Kerry look like the picture of manly decisiveness by November. I'm having a hard time remembering important issues that he hasn't been on both sides of.

McCain had better hope all Barry's talk of a new kind of campaigning holds up, because if someone wanted to go old-school attack style on him, he's oh so ripe for it.

Here's the part of the interview that Rubin left out:

Rubin: "So should the United States be dealing with that new reality through normal diplomatic contacts to get the job done for the United States?"

Sen. McCain: "I think the United States should take a step back, see what they do when they form their government, see what their policies are, and see the ways that we can engage with them, and if there aren't any, there may be a hiatus. But I think part of the relationship is going to be dictated by how Hamas acts, not how the United States acts."

He told Rubin, CNN, and said in a press release that the election gave Hamas an opportunity to reject violence, renounce the destruction of Israel as a goal, and act like a legitimate political party rather than a terrorist organization. If they did that, then the US would find ways to engage with them. If not, McCain said a hiatus would occur in diplomatic contacts with the PA - which is exactly what happened.

Has anybody noticed a subtle shift in the news since Barack won the (presumptive) nomination? I mean, we all knew he was going to win for a while now but all of a sudden the media realizes nobody's falling for the extended contest anymore and McCain's ripe for the picking.

/He's an appeaser!

It's easy when the Republicans are so incredibly stupid about the state of information gathering these days. They're running a 2004 campaign. It's not going to work.

Sure - because those righteous palestinians would NEVER think of targeting civilians, while that's ALL the evil Israelis ever do.

McCain said that we would have to "deal" with them at some point. That could be dropping a 500lbs bomb or giving a phone call. At least he was smart enough to leave some ambiguity.

Stopheles 2008-05-18 03:07:33 PM
IlGreven: HansensDisease: Plz to have Rummy/Saddam version?

That wouldn't be accurate -- Rumsfeld (and the Reagan Administration which he represented) weren't appeasing Hussein with that appearance and handshake, but instead confirming that the Reagan Administration was happy to deal with someone who committed war crimes, so long as they liked the taste of American money.

Strangely, several members of the Reagan Administration used the crimes committed by Hussein right before that handshake as the case against him in the months running up to the invasion in 2003. And Hussein's quick trial focussed on pre-Reagan-era crimes, leaving alone, for example, the gassing of Halabja in 1988 (which provided the mass graves that the right wing trumpeted as proof of Hussein's being the next Hitler, and which coincidentally happened three full years before the U.S. decided to cut ties with Hussein).

So anyway, Rummy and Reagan weren't APPEASING Hussein, they were congratulating him on a job well done.

MooseUpNorth 2008-05-19 09:10:37 AM
Besides, by Bush and McCain's definition, any world leader talking to the GOP are appeasers.
