Handsome B. Wonderful: Here comes the Trent Reznor hatred.

I'll start.

The man's lyrics stink. Okay, so occasionally he will write a few memorable lines, at the rate of maybe 2-3 per album. But it's 95% high-school-emo-quality lyrics. Some of that crap is just unforgiveable.

This is easily in my top 5 favorite NIN songs but this Live version just didnt even come close to capturing the feeling on the studio version.

/love NIN

+1 for the headline, Subby.

I can't wait to see them live in August.

Handsome B. Wonderful: Here comes the Trent Reznor hatred.

He's not hated so much as overrated. There is a huge difference.

I will say this, though: "The Perfect Drug" is perfectly retarded. And a lot of his songs on many of his albums are filler tracks. That guy's got more 'lets throw this in here and say it's an album' than most.

But, damn, he can write some good songs.

I'll give the very same criticism to another artist I like much more than NIN --- Moby. I got a lot of his albums, but I'm not always in the mood for some of the 'not so good songs.'

Here's the thing, though: Moby's not so good songs are just kind've boring, or fall flat, or just don't do it for me. NIN's more 'not so good' is closer to the 'that's annoying me' or 'fast forward this before my ears bleed and I dig out my eyes with a spoon.'

A great moment was on a Bevis and Butthead episode.

Thank you very much we're Nine Inch Nails

You know the one.

I also remember their Woodstock set where they rolled in the mud right before playing, which was a genius move.

I loved The Perfect Drug. Crazy drum break.

Pretty Hate Machine sucks. The Fragile is a masterpiece.

I saw him in concert once, with David Bowie. Bowie was better. And probably still is.

Saw them last year and seeing them again in July. 2 albums worth of new material has come out in that time so it should be a whole new show.

NIN was the soundtrack to my teen years and probably will be the soundtrack to my entire life.

Interesting sidenote:

If you go into any industrial space and look up into the corner, you should see one of those heating units that hang from the ceiling. Invariably, it will say "REZNOR" on it.

Yep, 'ol Trentie from Western Pa. came from money.

Not only that, but his great-uncles were all rhinos on a ferris wheel.

I know it's popular to hate Trent and all, but I still loves me some NIN. His last 3 albums (Year Zero, Ghosts, The Slip) have been fantastic, and I absolutely love what he's doing with online distribution. Just bought tickets to see him for the fourth time on September 3rd, and can't wait to see the new material live. Say what you want about the guy, but he can still put on a kick-arse live show.

eh, the music outshines the crappy lyrics. Just don't read the lyric book while listening to the music and you'll be ok.

or pick up Ghosts. Whatever.

It's like a promo, he's giving away free samples to hook you ... "Here, have some free crack" ... he'll get more dividends in the end ...

Or, most likely, he's doing it bz he wants to get it out there, knowing that it'd not sell ALL that well, being non-standardy NIN stuff perhaps. Either way, he's not worried about his other music not selling.

He probably generated a HUGE amount of money from the publicity, the sales of his other non-free stuff, etc.

It's a smart thing to do.

Bhasayate

He's proved many times that he's in it for the music. He told packed crowds to steal his music because his label was ripping them off. He released the Closure dvd himself through a torrent file when his label wouldn't let him release it because of legal issues. Unlike a lot of artists he actually cares about his fans, and has more than enough credit to prove it.

attack of the 2008-05-18 01:52:10 PM
Oh, and he made 1.6 mil in one week off of his 2 hour instrumental album that came out 2 months ago. The album he just released for free is much more commercial sounding than that. He would have made way more off of this one, without a doubt. But he chose to give it away.

czerno 2008-05-18 02:03:29 PM
Trent is definitely very good to his fans, but don't get me wrong, he is an excellent businessman. The "let me release a $300 limited edition box set of Ghosts without even dropping a hint beforehand" was a genius move. He made $750,000 in three days from impulse buying.

Don't get me wrong, I love NIN, and having The Slip for free and Ghosts for $10 is amazing, and his concert tickets aren't very bad either for the shows that he does put on.

What exactly would standard NIN stuff be anyway, something that sounds like The Downward Spiral? In my opinion, all of the NIN full length albums have their own sound so it would be quite hard to say there is some sort of standard.

Also, I think Ghosts (36 instrumentals and all) would be the one that he'd want to 'get out there, knowing that it'd not sell ALL that well' and yet he was able to charge some people as much as $300 for that.

I'm not going to argue that it wasn't a smart business move to release an album entirely free. BUT, I think its amusing that people (not you bhasayate) who don't like his music will still find ways to insinuate Reznor is a 'sell-out' despite the fact that he gives it away and encourages people to download it illegally.

Good point, and I know i'm preaching to the choir, but did you realize that you won't even be able to buy the physical album until the middle of the summer? At that point, you'd be hard pressed to find someone that actually likes it that doesn't have it burnt to a CD already.

And what would have stopped him from just waiting a few months and releasing the physical album at the same time? He has no more record label problems, he doesn't have to worry about it being leaked if he doesn't want it to be.

"The Slip" is a pretty good record so far - I'm 5 tracks in to it. Grabbed Apple Lossless and the sound quality is excellent.

Yeah, that's pretty silly thing to do!

Interesting, I didn't know that.

Captbookbag: What exactly would standard NIN stuff be anyway, something that sounds like The Downward Spiral?

Good question. I suppose by 'standard stuff' I had in mind the first 10-12 years or so of material. I stopped paying attention to the new stuff after that. I heard bits and pieces here and there ... Perhaps I'll check out the new stuff ... there certainly has been quite a buzz.

I didn't know it had sold THAT much. The 'net sure has changed things. You GOT to Trent respect for being on top of that, being good to his fans, and doin whatever the fark he wants.

I'm sure there'll be another NIN thread in a few days if this one dries up hehe

Bhasayate here's part of the press release from nin's publicist for more acurate numbers.

"Nine Inch Nails' 36-track instrumental opus Ghosts I-IV, released
March 2 via NIN.com, has amassed a first week total of 781,917
transactions (including free and paid downloads as well as orders for
physical product), resulting in a take of $1,619,420 USD."

Not bad for an instrumental album with (mostly) no hype about it at all. Also the cd version debuted at #14 on the billboard charts. I wonder what the totals for Ghosts, The Slip, and Saul Williams' are at now.

Papagolash: here's part of the press release from nin's publicist for more acurate numbers.

Thanks. Well, whatever they are for The Slip, they're +1 now.

I listened to about half of the album. I didn't listen real carefully, but one thing I noticed is that the guitars are a lot higher in the mix, and there seems to be more of them. The first few tracks were OK, some cool parts here and there. But "Discipline", and especially "Echoplex", stuck out. I went back and listened to those ones again. The chord changes in the chorus and in the second verse work really well. I do like how he's playing a root tone and going around with the chords and such. the guitar parts around 2:30 -- and on compliment things nicely.

In short, I like some of the new NIN songs. A lot.

All you haters, and all y'all (like me) who liked parts of the other albums but not others, I suspect you'll find stuff you'll like and stuff you'll not like on these newer albums. But, again, it's worth listening to the whole thing to pick them out.

Hell, it's worth listening to whatever just to if you like it. How will you know? :P
