wooohooo thank god i just moved, else i would have to evacuate. No kidding that spill is about 1/2 mile as the crow flies from where i use to live. Talked with some friends who still live around there, they were allowed to go back home earlier, but they probally have had to leave again.

Any ways nothing to see here move along, it's not like this is the first time something like this has happend in lousiana.

The PROBLEM was probably that train was labeled simply as "35%" and some undergrad got all pissed off trying to get between that and some "0.1 normal" stock solution they had to make at the next station.

/wishes they'd at least specify that it was weight percent
//wishes more that after however many years of playing with this stuff I'd remember how to convert without having to look anything up

Why is it still called Muriatic acid when you buy it at Home Cheapo for cleaning concrete (or making meth)?

foxbrook78: Why is it still called Muriatic acid when you buy it at Home Cheapo for cleaning concrete (or making meth)?

The same reason that sodium carbonate is called soda ash and potassium carbonate is potash: lay people are idiots and fear change.

I think A) tradition (the home and garden folks never got a wrist-slap from IUPAC) and B) people don't get scared that you're selling big containers of muriatic acid, or putting muriatic acid in your public pool/water park to regulate the pH.

To be fair, it's also completely farkign useless for calculating equilibria and reaction rates, which is why almost no one ever uses it.

And not changing with temperature is really a handicap, since most of, you know, reality changes with temperature.

A plumber wrote to the Bureau of Standards saying that he had found hydrochloric acid good for cleaning out clogged drains. The Bureau wrote back," The efficacy of hydrochloric acid is indisputable but chlorine residue is incompatible with metallic permanence."

The plumber wrote back that he was glad that the Bureau agreed. The Bureau tried again, writing, "We cannot assume responsibility for the production of toxic and noxious residues with hydrochloric acid and suggest that you use an alternate procedure." The plumber again wrote back and said he was glad that the Bureau agreed with him.

Finally, the Bureau wrote to the plumber, "Don't use hydrochloric acid--it eats the hell out of the pipes."

Actually deleted from Wikipedia's entry on Hydrochloric acid:

As a highly corrosive liquid, hydrochloric acid should be handled only with appropriate safety precautions, but is highly tasty.

It could change with temperature - Ksp is temperature dependent.
