Ringing is annoying, not deafening.

Al Di Meola is a great guitarist, but maaaan is he pompous. A friend of mine had his instructional video, and he basically said (paraphrasing) "If you don't play things the way I do, then you're kinda cheating, and not really playing guitar right." I stopped taking him so seriously after I saw that.

He could stand to be a better songwriter, though. I saw him a couple of years ago, and except for the instrumental pyrotechnics, his songs sucked. Not much in the way of melody or any kind of hook to latch on to, except for Race with the Devil. That was by far the best song of the night, I think because it had an actual melody and was memorable for something besides the meedly meedly. It was fun seeing a bunch of world-class musicians play at the peak of their abilities, but it got pretty monotonous pretty quickly. That's why I generally prefer Vai or Satriani for my guitar virtuosity... they usually write songs, not chord progressions to solo over.

Indeed, it's sort of like reading everything like this.

Al Di Meola plays jazz. That's all jazz has been for years - chord progressions to solo over.

Satriani actually writes damn good songs (i.e. "Crystal Planet") but I cannot stand Vai!!! I have mad respect for the guy's virtuosity but as music, it fails to inspire me or move me in any way!

I have slight tinnitus and my mom has it worse and it intensifies when she's under stress. It'd be nice if they found a cure for it cause it can be a little maddening. I realize it's not on the top of the diseases that must be cured list but still. My mom got it from an ear infection as a child, not blasting a huge ass amp in her ears for 20 years.

Shatner has it. He said it almost made him commit suicide. Nimoy has it too. Something about the sound on the Star Trek set.

I dunno--I never had a hard time finding the melodies in di Meola's music.

I've gotten pretty good at ignoring/not being aware of it most of the time. Until someone mentions it. Thanks subby.

Yeah, but there's lots of jazz out there with good melody and hooks that doesn't get old. Maybe it's just him, but he gets old quick. I can hang out at my local jazz dive and listen to a big band or a quartet all evening long. And I've been to a couple of G3 concerts, and enjoyed myself the whole time at those, so it's not just a guitar-solos-only kinda thing. So I dunno, it's probably just the constant stream of 16th and 32nd notes that gets old.

Yesterday I heard Johnny Guitar Watson's name.

Today I hear Al Di Meola's name.

Tomorrow Django Reinhardt.

Eighteen posts and no Pete Townsend references. Surprised, I am.

I HAVE THIS - Erm I have this and at times it can make you feel real, real crazy. It's like Chinese water torture - it's always there. Sometimes it fades into the background but most of the time it is there, like an extremely high pitched tea kettle. Or like the sound made as a finger circles the lip of fine crystal champagne glasses, but much sharper, and tinnier. I have to sleep with the TV on or all I can hear is that accursed whine. As far as Shatner saying it made him feel suicidal, let's just say I can see where he is coming from. Times of stress, as stated above, can make it worse, also depression. Please cure this, it sucks mucho anus.

/Rant over.

I had an accident in grad school which left me with tinnitus also. However, I am only at "needing a fish tank" on the sleep scale. I emphasize with you.

Is it not maddening to know that a substantial number of people are going to end up with this through teh iPod and da thumpin' bass and they haven't a clue what's it's like to have a handbell choir in your noggin 24/7/366.

Try having Tinnitus (mine is very reactive & very loud) AND Hyperacusis (new window). I do.
Makes you want to crawl into a dark room and never come out. Which I do often.

I pray for a medical miracle many times day.

Here are some Celebrities & Musicians with Tinnintus (new window)

My Dad has tinnitus. I forget where he went (maybe Baltimore?), but he ended up getting these things you wear in your ears that cancel out the noise, I think. It's supposed to train your mind to block out the noise too. Long story short, after a year he doesn't have to wear them anymore, and he barely has the ringing at all.

I have tinnitus, and I can hear it over the sound of a lawnmower or MRI.
It was completely cured by the anticonvulsant Trileptal.
Unfortunately, Trileptal also gives me severe joint pain so I can't play the guitar, so I had to quit taking it (for depression).

So I get to stay depressed AND have the squealing in my ears.

/life is grand, thanks

I more blame Slayer, The Misfits and Immortal. The cabinet shop helped too. Never wore protection, now I have hearing loss.

/WEAR THE DAMN PLUGS! Having to use an electronic tuner every farking time on my guitar is turning into a real biatch.

All of the above criticisms of Al Di Meola may be valid, but Elegant Gypsy Suite is great and I could listen to Lady Of Rome, Sister Of Brazil on a continuous loop for days.
