That's awesome. 42 years. Simply awesome.

Wish I could find an apartment like that in Chicago. Not the dead body aspect but the free rent and non-nosy neighbors would be great.

A trend setter in whose footsteps countless Farkers will doubtless follow.

FTFA: found the mummified remains of the woman

You keep using that word, I don't think it means what you think it means.

Also, WHAT THE FARK? 42 years and the owner of the building just never bothered to enter that particular room or something? Nevermind the fact that home is the first place you might look for somebody who came up `missing'

Complete and utter FAIL on behalf of family and police investigators.

There's a whole lot missing in this story.

42 years, and the rent was paid the whole time? What about all the bills? The landlord never checked why the mail or papers were piling up? No one wondered about the smell while she was "mummifying?"

She had no family and no friends who wondered why she never contacted them after she supposedly moved? I call foul. Someone was obviously collecting on her government checks.

Either that, or the door was boarded up and painted over, and they forgot the apartment was there, which is also possible since part of the time she was in Ceaucescu's Yugoslavia. Either way, something is fishy.

At least she ever missed an episode of the Twilight Zone.

ALL OF THESE

Either there's A LOT more to this story, or it's just a plain ol' hoax. There's no way an apartment can just sit there for 42 years and no one is going to go in.

Did you know your reading comprehension might not be as good as half of us?

"POLICE broke into a flat to check who lived there 42 years after its owner was reported missing - and found the mummified remains of the woman sitting in front of her TV."

She was the landlord since she owned the apartment.
It's strange that the government never came after the tax money... but that's a different story

Gyrfalcon: which is also possible since part of the time she was in Ceaucescu's Yugoslavia.

Ceausescu was a Romanian dickhead.
Maybe you're thinking of Josip Tito, the Yugoslavian dickhead?
But he died more than 24 years ago...perhaps Milosevic, the Serbian dickhead?
But Zagreb is in Croatia...not sure what dickhead ran that place...

Lots of dickheads in that general region...

Oh 42 years, not 24...maybe it was Tito, followed by many other dickheads.

But they found her remains in the tiny 13sq m flat after breaking in with bailiffs.

Dude, that's 140 square feet - 10' x 14'. I'd check out too.

Ceausescu was in Romania. He never had anything to do with Yugoslavia, but that location is how it could happen. Communists weren't well known for efficiency, nor would there be an angry landlord demanding her eviction so he could rent to someone else.

After the fall, a lot of buildings have been left abandoned, so someone not finding her later is possible too, since it is possible no one has done anything with the building in years.

They said one day she seemed to have just disappeared and they thought she had moved to the capital Zagreb.

That's what you get for assuming...

How is it possible? Hint: Your cops suck.

They'd have found her in 1967 here in the UK. When the TV license wasn't paid.

echinuts 2008-05-17 08:07:17 AM
No way this is true.

It's hard to find a landlord that wont knock on your door if the rent is 42 minutes late.

Same goes with utilities.

84? No she wasn't.

The real question should be: Was the TV still working?

doodler 2008-05-17 08:09:56 AM
ok here's the probable deal... they don't have computers 42 years ago, and she was a pensioner at the time, and her payments went into some bank account automatically. Can you imagine what the unspent payments plus interest has accrued to after 42 years?

I do. It's 14.8 Million US Dollars and all I need to get it out of the country is someone to pretend to be her long-lost child...

zekebullseye 2008-05-17 08:10:45 AM

That's the best explanation I've heard yet. Still a high probability of shenanigans, though.

And if they hadn't found her for another 3 years, she would have been discovered in the European Union.

Not only does this article say she died 35 years ago, but now the other tenants who didn't give a shiat are now trying to divvy up her property. Buncha vultures.

They recently laid off some people at my company. The layoffs had barely been announced before the remaining coworkers were asking for the newly unoccupied offices, chairs, desks, etc, in the middle of a busy workday!! They couldn't even wait for the dust to settle.

tonmeister 2008-05-17 08:13:00 AM
Isn't it also weird that, coincidentally, she would have been 42 years old when she died (born in '24, died in '66)? How often does a 42-year-old woman die while sitting in front of the TV. It's not like she was 82....

moulderx1 2008-05-17 08:13:18 AM
That would never have happened in the good old USA.

Her 42 cats woulda taken care of things-if you know what I mean- and forged her name on the Croation equivalent of her Social Security checks.

Well, forget I said they didn't give a shait, because the previous linked story said they'd been paying her bills for years. I wonder if I can pull that, and just Fark from my apartment for the rest of my life.

According to a link posted by Apparent Nuisance, the tenants did contact the police, multiple times over the years. But the police never bothered to do anything about it. They thought she moved away and have been trying to sort the situation out since 1970.

Judgmental much?

It happens.

My wife and I found her mother, who was only 50 at the time, lying dead on her couch in her apartment with the TV on.

Heart attack.

She'd only been there for about 2 to 3 days though. We know this because we found her on Wednesday morning, and the last time anyone had talked to her was on Sunday night.

This difference here is that my mother-in-law had family that cared. My wife got nervous after not hearing from her for a couple days.
