(ABC News) Obvious It's good thing average citizen Cindy McCain has decided her finances are none of our business-otherwise we might have to ask her awkward questions about things like her $2 million investment in Sudanese government connected companies   (abcnews.go.com) divider line 167

Gee, one more level of disconnection in there, and she'd be in a movie with Kevin Bacon...

I'm so glad Cindy is already working to protect us all from things we need not know. She'll be the best first lady ever! I bet she gives nice hugs.

Though I applaud Mrs. McCain for divesting the securities in question, I can't help but wonder at her timing. It's not as though her husband has spoken up about Darfur only in the last 2 weeks.

How do figure? Subby makes it sound as if she had any control whatsoever over what companies the fund invests in. Subby also makes it sound as if she invested $2M into Sudanese companies. She didn't. She invested $2M into an investment fund which happened to have stakes in Sudanese companies (and many others I'm sure). Like any good investor I'm she has fairly diversified holdings and I'm also willing to bet money she doesn't know every company she might have money tied into. Subby, you fail at trolling. Oh, and her finances are none of our business. She's not running for public office and her assets are kept separate from her husbands. Nice try, though.

therewasahue 2008-05-16 11:47:36 PM
You mean she didn't keep up with every country every company she had stock in did business in?

TERRORIST!

deevo 2008-05-16 11:47:49 PM
I'm no fan of John McCain, or Cindy. But as he says, they file separately, I really don't see it as a big deal. She seems like an out-of-the-picture type, a Laura Bush who doesn't care about literacy, or God, and isn't loaded with psychoactive medications.

The only way she'd be a relevant First Lady is if her frail old husband has a stroke and has to wear a napkin over his face and he can't speak at all, except for her when she goes in to visit him alone and... hey wait a minute.

shanrick [TotalFark] 2008-05-16 11:47:59 PM
She didn't expect the Spanish inquisition.

Shvetz 2008-05-16 11:48:22 PM
So... she has financial connections to genocidal, gun-toting Muslims. What's the big deal? It's not like her middle name is Hussein or anything.

dbubb 2008-05-16 11:48:24 PM
Consider that this represents less than 2% of her portfolio. I'd like to see everyone here account for every little bit of their portfolio, retirement account, etc.

scrufferdog 2008-05-16 11:49:04 PM
So does this mean the Dems can run attack ads against Cindy like the Tennessee GOP is doing to Michelle? I believe there is much more to work with on Cindy's side. Great!

southaustin [TotalFark] 2008-05-16 11:50:21 PM
Hobodeluxe: McCain talks a lot about transparency but yet her finances and his medical records seem to be opaque.

Everyone else's medical records are private (HIPAA). Unless it immediately affects the country, I don't think medical issues are anyone's business. Do we really want the details of his last colonoscopy?

Thrag 2008-05-16 11:50:26 PM
This is just ridiculous. Cindy McCain isn't running for office. How is anyone supposed to know how their own money is invested! This shouldn't even be an issue.

Hey, did you hear about how Obama once shared a cab with the tailor of the second cousin of Osama Bin Laden's college roommate!

Well, if your family is running in politics then usually you take the care to scrub down your investments, knowing the possible political implications. I would think that she could give instructions to "her people" to ensure that her money had no ties to anything un-Republican or un-American.

And yes, it is people's business is the President is living off of proceeds made in a morally dubious manner.

We're not running for public office on a platform of openness and transparency. Her husband is, and unless she has her finances completely cut off from him then they are fair game. And if she DOES have them cut off, anything he gets from her should be considered a campaign contribution and be subject to scrutiny.

Ummm, regular people don't usually know much about what there money is doing, but very rich family money people generally do. She would have personal investment people who would give her extensive analysis of her wealth regularly.

Plus I think you'd take a little extra care to instruct your money advisers if your husband were running for President.

Ah, yes, the junkie who steals from charities for the troops is a lot better than Michelle Obama. This is what is called cognitive dissonance, folks. Unless, of course, that bit of BS doesn't bother your conscience.

Macthulhu 2008-05-17 12:05:57 AM
I trust every one of you bellyachers knows exactly what companies your 401ks and other investments have ties to? Those of you with enough money to have investments know perfectly well that they can contain hundreds of companies and even other funds, themselves containing hundreds of companies. It's absurd to spin this as Cindy McCain personally supporting the Sudanese government. Not to mention, if you read the article, she pulled her money out of it anyway. This is right up their with stories about Obama's middle name.
