i'd use it for comedy, laughing at allah, an angry, petty, very human god of goatherding illiterates who hates the very women he created and has a hard-on for worship every few hours or he'll smite your ass.

It's on my reading list anyway. Be kinda nice to pick one up without having to pay for it.

That's interesting. The copy they are giving out is an English translation. If I understand correctly, that invalidates it, as the Quran is supposed to be read in the original Arabic.

Or maybe that's just some Muslims. I didn't do well in Religions of the World.

Flaming_Jesus: Will it add holiness to my compost pile?

Well, when you're out of pages in the Sears catalog out at the two-holer....

Actually, I've read it a couple times. Muslims should be nice to Christians and Jews, or they won't make it to paradise. Invite them into their tents and share their salt and all that.

muck4doo [TotalFark] 2008-05-16 11:11:06 PM
I already have one. I also have other books about different intrepretations of Islam. I'm Christian and conservative, and I think this is a good thing. Islam has many positives about it, as do all religions. Yes, there are things interpreted differently by different people, and some things can go in bad ways. Of course, the biggest asshats are those that want to paint everyone with broad brushes.

You know you could just Google "free Quran" (or "free *insert holy text name here*") and get hooked up?

That's what I was wondering. I found quite a few websites that listed passages. They weren't as numerous as "free Bible" but they do exist.

I'm trying to decide what would be good books to give away free. Origin of the Species would be the obvious choice. Anyone else got any good ones to add? I can't think of anything at the moment.

Have you thought about maybe having a teevee show and asking for donations? You can give people your message then ask for donations? Maybe you can try holding weekly meetings and asking for like a ten percent donation to help spread your good news?

Jon Snow [TotalFark] 2008-05-17 01:14:40 AM
Does anyone here actually believe that there is an entity that is/was capable of violating the pertinent laws of physics on a whim and chose to do so by performing what have been deemed "miracles"? In any faith?

Can we get some people on record rather than demonize them? I've never actually met anyone that admits, after a few drinks, into believing the supernatural aspects of his or her beliefs. They always handwave towards some version of philosophy that has nothing to do with the blood-soaked roots of their own religion.

And just in case this gets flipped to sound like an attack- I will not comment, much less criticize anyone for their answer provided they leave me out of it, as I hope they will.

How many Christians believe that Jesus sent demons into pigs? How many Mayahana Buddhists believe that Pure Land isn't a cop out? How many Muslims believe that Muhammad rode a magical horse named Buraq to Jerusalem? How many Jews believe that there is a male deity that promised them a specific geographic piece of land?

I know quite a few... Then again I grew up in an Irish Catholic neighborhood in Chicago and spent 12 years in Catholic school being taught by nuns and brothers.

you assume i wasn't being serious? hmmm

anyway, it just struck me as funny because i was at an event tonight featuring harrison schmitt, and during the q&a one of the kids in attendance asked him "what did you do with the human waste?" his answer was hysterical - especially when he described the beautiful sight it was watching his piss instantly freeze when entering the vacuum of space. his explanation of the ziplock bag with a ring of adhesive around it that they had to stick to their ass when they had to move more than liquids was hysterical, but he made it a point to note that no matter who you are or where you are, that is a legitimate concern

so it was actually on topic and relevant, even if only to me

/this is a blog, right?

Damn...I actually paid for mine. Not worth it.

Picked it up with a gift certificate the same day I bought Mein Kampf. The cashier was a young with a prominent Star of David pennant on her necklace. I felt kind of like a jerk (not that I had reason to), but she was pleasant and polite - I'm not even sure she paid attention to what I was buying.

For the record, I wanted a copy of MK that I could hi-lite, dog ear and write in (it was pertinent to my focus of study in grad school), and I bought the Koran so I could speak of Islam without being completely ignorant of it (like 99% of non-Muslim Americans).

I would have liked to chat her up, maybe buy her a coffee in other circumstances...instead, I just wanted to get my receipt and go.

My invisible man is better than your invisible man.

Sure, we won't know who was right about our personal beliefs until we die anyways, so lets just have Holy Wars about it.

Because that makes sense.

The Quran starts out peaceful, Jews are our brothers, Christians are our brothers, blah, blah.

But when The Prophet tried to join the religions together and the Jews and Christians said "thanks, but no", that's when the Quran gets all "death to the infidels ! "
