McCain's campaign has so many FEC rule violations, he'll be dead and buried before it's all sorted out. That's right, I said it, they'll sort it all out by September, 2008.

It's amazing the difference a week makes.

Going into West Virginia, the Democrats were divided, the Republicans were showing signs of life, there were questions about Obama's electibility and there was just a general malaise hanging over the entire process.

Now, Obama has consolidated his hold on the party, the Republicans are melting down, Hillary has all but disappeared, Chris Matthews is hulking out, McCain seems lost, the Democrats are emboldened and Bush was knocked back on his heels.

If this keeps up, I may be forced to start respecting the Democratic Party.

Stop trying to associate partisan politics with sociopathic entities like corporations. They will support whoever will keep the lulz and the ratings and therefore the advertiser cashflow up. That was Obama when he was the underdog challenging the Clintons, then Clinton when the shenanigans began. And now McCain, because he's got a lot of baggage and has also made a habit of saying stupid things (like "bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran"). And also because they've already burnt all of Obama's baggage to death.

That's what will undo McCain more than anything else - In the last few weeks, we saw unbelivable desperation in the media's attempts to manufacture Obama controversies (Abercrombie guys, anyone?). There's NFW to keep that up until the general; All that's left is to compare their policies - first and foremost, McCain is pro-war in a 75% anti-war country.

I think the best part of this week was watching Obama and the Congressional Democrats bloody Bush's nose. When you get past the "aw shucks" facade, Bush is basically a bully who thinks he should always get his way. Now that Obama has punched back, Bush doesn't quite know how to react. It's makes you wonder how the last two years would have gone if the Democrats has punched him a few times following the 2006 election instead of constantly backing down.

They punched, but they don't have anyone with some spine to do the punching. Reid? Pelosi? Gimme a break.

Now we're going to see the difference between these two campaigns.

One will be a well oiled machine: slick, efficient, kinks worked out, battle-tested.

The other will spit steam through random cracks, leak oil all over the floor, and will pound out a dead metallic thunk at irritatingly frequent intervals from a warped and rusted flywheel.

I'll leave it to you to guess which campaign will do which.

Somewhere between Bittergate, Sweetiegate, Flag-Pin-Lapel-gate, and Elitegate. You know, the real important issues facing America.

rppp01a: It's one thing to gain power. It's another to keep it. It is yet another to do the right thing with power.

Yes, and that's going to be the real challenge for a President Obama. There's a lot of crap coming down the pipeline and preaching change isn't going to be enough. He's shown though that he's smart, he's a fast learner and he's willing to consider unconventional solutions.

bartink: They punched, but they don't have anyone with some spine to do the punching. Reid? Pelosi? Gimme a break.

But that's just it: they were spineless the first year because there were no serious leaders in the Party who could rally the troops. With Obama now the undisputed leader of the party, the rank-and-file are emboldened. I think what really surprised Bush was not that Obama fought back but that the Democrats immediately closed rank behind Obama and backed him up. The Republicans aren't used to facing a united front. For the moment, at least, it's changed the perception of the Democratic Party. Only time will tell if it lasts.

Yeah, when they put one, just one negative thing about McCain on the vaunted 24/7 week-long loop they seem to reserve for Democrats and sex scandals, I'll believe they've finally ended McCain's "free lunch".

You'd think McCain's involvement in the Keating scandal (among other financial scandals) would be more newsworthy than rumors pushed by the right wing that Obama just loved the Weather Underground because he once shared the same air with one of their members. But no.

The major media is still letting the right wing lead them around by the nose on this election season. They get to define the narrative, and the media seems to think it's their job just to interpret the narrative that the right wing creates around the various candidates. Sometimes that means they refute the charges, sometimes it means the discuss them as long as possible if they're especially inflammatory, but the point is that the narrative the right creates around a candidate is always a topic of discussion, and always seems to be taken at face value, no matter how ridiculous.

Something juicy on one of the Democrats comes out of the right-wing blogs - major media takes it at face value and reports what they say, even if they clearly think the charges are ridiculous.

Something juicy on McCain comes out of the left-wing blogs - the media laugh off these "nutty lefties" and continue to discuss the narrative the far right handed them on a platter.

Many in the media are just now starting to wake up to this fact, but not enough. I guess we'll see if enough wake up to matter in the next few weeks.
