Just because Bush screwed the pooch in Iraq doesn't mean juxtaposing pictures of his daughter in her wedding dress with dead bodies is a good idea. Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

It implies, somehow, that Jenna shouldn't be allowed to be happy on her wedding day because her dad made a bad decision. I just found it extremely distasteful. You're obviously free to have your own opinion on it.

what_now: Why do you think it's in poor taste?

I, being a lifelong "liberal" and an opponent of the Iraq war from day one, think it's in bad taste because there are more intelligent ways to get your point across than resorting to not-so-clever photo comparisons between two essentially unrelated events. It's almost a godwin of sorts, a "you know who else got married..." kind of tactic where an event that is in no way political is being unfairly politicized by being compared to the atrocities in Iraq; it's like if you had a picture of President Bush eating a cheeseburger for lunch and then superimposed a picture of a decimated McDonalds in Iraq with dead children scattered about, it's attempting to draw a comparison between two superficially similar situations that are at their core wholly unrelated.

In other words, it's the kind of behavior I would expect from right-wing pundits like O'Reilly, Limbaugh, or Colter and I think we only do ourselves and our ideology a disservice by lowering ourselves to that level of discourse.

Well, I think it's directed at Jenna's father. I think, and I could be wrong, that the author is furious that a man who has created such misery and fail gets to have a happy joyous occasion.

The people who pick on Jenna and Barbara Bush, and young Chelsea Clinton* are assholes. It's not their fault their dad is a terrible human being. So, in that they are attacking *her* I agree-it's in poor taste.

Now if someone had taken a picture of Jenna and her new husband and posted it next to the famous wedding picture of the Marine with the melted face, I think it would have been more effective.

*current adult Chelsea got into it on her own.

That may be true, but the method that was used showed a profound lack of taste. There are plenty of pictures of George Bush doing "happy" things that would be more appropriate for a composition such as that. I just think that using Jenna's wedding not only lacks efficacy but will likely do exactly the opposite of what it was intended. People are more likely to be mad at the person who did it than anything.

What exactly does "I've cancelled my subscription...I still get it at work" mean?

Did he have two subscriptions to Newsweek so that he could have reading material in both his work AND his home toilet? And he cancelled one out of anger, but really needs the short and easy-to-read articles while he takes a crap at the office so he's not prepared to cancel that subscription?

Is he 50% angry at KOS? Wouldn't the statement have more ooomph if he cancelled ALL of his subscriptions to Newsweek?

Maybe. I wouldn't have done it, I know that. But I was pretty pissed when all weekend, the media was gushing about this wedding, showing the "souvenir" coffee mugs and mouse pads, talking about her dress and flowers and the guest list.

They spent more TIME on this wedding than they did on the war. Than they ever do. And I can understand the anger that causes. Most people do not like this man; why is the media so insistent on showing us his daughter's wedding?

Regardless of whether or not you like the man, he's still President of the United States. That means the daughter of the President is getting married. It's big news, politics aside, when a head of state has a family member getting married.

It just further illustrates that fundies and ignorants of both sides are exactly the same (by both sides I mean US and abroad).

//Rather, the conservatives do, the libs tend to hate terrorists no matter what.

I was just expressing disgust to my coworker this morning about that issue (specifically the top 10 popular "news" stories on CNN this morning). I agree that the wedding shouldn't have changed existing news coverage. I do, however, think it's unfair to blame Jenna for that. She purposefully chose a wedding at their private ranch instead of the White House.

Regardless that he is a very disliked man, he still is a big, big name out there. Its like how they cover celebrity marriages/divorces/rehab/childbirth and lthe like. People find this interesting. The news isn't news; its entertainment, pure and simple. If it was about real news, the only time then American Idol would ever be in the news is if a riot broke out or some disater, besides simply being AI, occurred.

/Started to dislike the news when they started it with the weather
//Having a forecast of 'WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!' gets old real quick.
