And here I thought that running for public office was a dead giveaway that he was, in fact, a politician.

Thanks, detectivemitter!

No, that's not shameless pandering. Not at all.

Unright 2008-05-16 10:46:31 AM
Damnit. We Fark atheists thought for sure that our groupthink choice could get elected to USA president on an anti-Xtianity platform. Curses! Foiled again!

I'll just repeat what I posted in another thread...

Personally, I think it's because morons seem to not know (or are willfully ignorant to the fact) that he's actually a Christian and not a Muslim. This to me says "Hey, I love God too".

FlashHarry [TotalFark] 2008-05-16 11:11:03 AM
i thought the fact that he is a politician was proof enough that he's a politician.

Ant 2008-05-16 11:19:57 AM
I, for one, will not support a candidate unless he lives under the same anthropocentric delusions that I do.

sigdiamond2000 [TotalFark] 2008-05-16 11:34:36 AM
Wait a minute...Obama's a Christian?

Why has the drive-by MSM lamestream media kept this under wraps until now?

BKITU [TotalFark] 2008-05-16 11:41:53 AM
You mean the man who devoted an entire section of his book on politics to his faith--and gave special emphasis to the idea that the Democratic Party is wrong in its general indifference toward religious people--is going to try and capture a portion of the religious-issues voters?

zOMG NO WAI!!11!1!!1!

Car_Ramrod 2008-05-16 11:57:39 AM
Weren't people just outraged that he was too tied to his church? And now they're complaining that he's pretending to be religious?

Ok, gotcha.

These people were simultaneously scared that he was a Muslim while taking offense that he'd gone to church with a 'racist' pastor for 20 years.

Doublethink must be comforting.

THIS. Submitter obviously has not been following Senator Obama's campaign for the last year. Perhaps Subby also needs to be informed that Senator Obama is a UCC Christian, has attended the same church in Chicago for two decades, is heavily influenced by the Protestant theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, and at times has been linked to a liberation theology pastor and biblical scholar Jeremiah Wright. Here's an article from September of 2007 discussing Obama's religious influences. (new window)

Didja happen to catch the real interviews with West Virginians on the Daily show a night or two ago?

Anyone who's watching CNN or MSNBC right know also knows that he just simultaneously kicked Bush and McCain's ass on foreign policy. Wasn't quite an Andrew Shepard moment, but it's coming.

/this is going to be a landslide victory

Who ever claimed he wasn't a politician?

He's just against certain old style politics.

If people attack him and claim he's a Muslim, showing his Christian side and values is the SMART thing to do, subby.

Bruce Campbell vs Army of Farkness 2008-05-16 01:00:00 PM
He is just clinging to his religion out of disillusionment

robsul82 [TotalFark] 2008-05-16 01:00:02 PM
So Obama should just bend over like Gore or Kerry and let the smear go unchallenged, i.e. "HE'S AN EVIL MUSLIM SLEEPER WITH AN AMERICA-HATING CHRISTIAN PASTOR!", or else he's "pandering."

Exxxxxcellent.

Fart_Machine 2008-05-16 01:00:46 PM

I suspect it's because certain people are more afraid of him winning then they were a while ago.

this is going to be a landslide victory

The black, junior senator, extreme liberal, anti-gun candidate with the un-patriotic wife and the muslim sounding name who hasn't won a single "battleground" state against a WOMAN has no chance, friend.

Sorry but you're letting your hopes cloud your reality.

The Homer Tax 2008-05-16 01:04:05 PM
Of course Obama is pandering to the Christians. You can't win the general election without the Christian vote. Over the next 5 months, watch as Obama does everything within his power to pretend like the Democrats are not the party of Secularism, who would love nothing more than to eliminate god from every aspect of our lives, up to and including expelling students from public schools who pray.

bwesb 2008-05-16 01:06:15 PM
The difference being that this time, Obama actually is a Christian.

danlpoon 2008-05-16 01:06:59 PM
Allow me to amend this slightly.

The black, junior senator, extreme liberal, anti-gun candidate with the un-patriotic wife and the muslim sounding name who hasn't won a single "battleground" state against a WOMAN and has ties to religious extremists and supports appeasement as a defense policy has no chance, friend.

OneBrightMonkey 2008-05-16 01:08:55 PM
I still hear people on both left and right leaning radio stations call in express apprehension about Obama because he hasn't flatly declared that he is not a Muslim (unless there's a quote out there I'm not privy to).

I'm an intensely secular dude so I could less than a shiat if he was a Pagan but maybe he should throw the fence sitters a bone and just clearly and plainly state the obvious without insulting people who actually are practicing Muslims.

You forgot that he was born a muslim and attended a muslim school, sometimes doesn't wear a flag pin on his lapel, and was sworn in on the Koran.

I think it points to his attempts to grab the religious vote after he, as Bruce Campbell vs Army of Farkness pointed out, pissed off the religious by lumping them in with gun nuts as sad, disillusioned little people. By coming out now, and stating he is doing God's Will is indeed pandering.

danlpoon 2008-05-16 01:10:15 PM
Dagnabbit, please indulge me one more edit. Thanks.

The black, junior senator, extreme liberal, anti-gun candidate with the un-patriotic wife and the muslim sounding name who hasn't won a single "battleground" state against a WOMAN and has ties to religious extremists and supports appeasement as a defense policy has no chance winning the Presidency on a "Tax and Spend" platform during a recession.

That should do it.

The fact that, no matter how Hillary tries to spin the numbers, Obama has the popular vote means nothing to you. The fact that he has the lead in delegates and that Hillary, even if she wins the 4 remaining states and gets MI and FL counted she'll still lose means nothing to you. S'okay. Don't let the little things like FACTS get in your way of your Obama hatred.

I think he was on 60 Minutes late last year and said something to the effect of "I am not, but so what if I was. You are insulting a large amount of the global population with your ignorant associations." It was pretty great actually.

danlpoon 2008-05-16 01:14:31 PM
This actually a better "list" than paragraph.

Reasons why Obama isn't going to be President

Black
Inexperienced Jr. State Senator.
Anti-gun
Weak on Crime
Unpatriotic wife
Muslim sounding name
Can't win swing voters
Ties to religious and racial extremists
supports Appeasement as defense policy
Weak on Israel
New Taxes for larger government during a recession.

Homer needs to check his facts. Keith Ellison took the oath on the Koran. Obama took the oath on a plain 'ol Bible.

/Care to mention his middle name to get a kneejerk reaction again?

Facts? We're talking about why he won't win the presidency. Facts have nothing to do with it.

Another one for danlpoon's list. Obama is a smoker who will encourage our children to smoke and ban lawsuits against tobacco companies.

How is it pandering? I believe it's just letting them know, "Look, you idiots, I'm not anti-religion. I'm a religious person, too. You and I have a lot more in common than you think. Stop being reactionary dopes." Albeit he's saying it better than that.

And I'm going to assume your "gun nuts as sad, disillusioned little people" thing was sarcasm.
