The Who rock. That is all.

I bloody love this performance.

You are forgiven!

When it comes to live performance, it doesn't take much to put the Stones to shame. They were/are, without question, the most overrated live band of all time (and The Who were one of the best). The Stones sound horrible live.

four soloists who manage to come together and make a great band. love how moon keeps that cymbal going.

I've seen both live. While the Stones certainly didn't suck, they didn't hold a candle to The Who. From my experience, I put The Who second only to Springsteen live. I'll admit to some bias because I'm a huge Bruce fan.

} seeing him in Düsseldorf next month

Not a Bruce fan in the slightest, but still has to be better than the Stones.

Saw the Who on their 20th anniversary of Tommy in Tampa. Great show. Pete split his finger open windmilling his guitar. Felt bad for the front row folks.

Townshend is the second best rhythm guitarist in the history of rock and roll.

I love how he helped bring edgy, nasty guitar to the mainstream music world. If it wasn't for guys like Pete Townshend, Leigh Stephens, and Tony Iommi, music would be very sad today.

I submitted this with an identical headline, like 3 times & now someone else gets the Green.

Cool-as-hell chops by The WHO in this one!

They Who invariably stole every show they showed up to. It's part of their charm.

MatrixOutsider [TotalFark] 2008-05-16 12:38:52 PM
Put together a lead singer, guitarist, and drummer with lots of charisma and you get a great live show. Even John's steady and unemotional performance had its own charm.

The rest of the Rock 'n Roll circus is cool, with Taj Mahal, and a performance with John Lennon, Eric Clapton, and Keith Richards on bass! I blocked out the stuff with Yoko on there. Marianne Faithful was hot back then, too.

DrBenway [TotalFark] 2008-05-16 12:53:12 PM
The entire show is available on DVD. Well worth seeing -- lots of good commentary, including an interesting, entirely coherent segment with Keith Richards.

Alcohol? Keith drank alcohol to sober up.

carmody 2008-05-16 01:12:56 PM
Only partially correct, subby. The production shoot took so long that the Stones didn't go on until around 5:00 in the morning. By the end, Brian Jones looks like death warmed over (which he would quite soon thereafter become), and the other guys in the band weren't faring much better.

But seriously, The Who are the farking kings. The first time I saw this performance of "A Quick One," I was sold for life. One of my all-time favorite performances of one of my all-time favorite tunes.

I've owned Rock & Roll Circus since it first came out on VHS and love to put it on for people who are unfamiliar with it. The first act out of the box: Early Jethro Tull with Tony Iommi on guitar!!!!!

Yup. Plus Toni Iommi is in there too.

Yeah, that was pretty weird. One of the few things not played live (only the vocals) -- isn't Iommi faking Mick Abrahams' slide part with no slide? I remember there's something obviously not right.

Supposedly it was down to Tull or some other new band on the scene, Led Zeppelin. But they thought the whole "singer with a flute" deal would be a better choice for variety's sake.

HappyHarryHardOn [TotalFark] 2008-05-16 01:40:50 PM
Yeah, say what you will but the Stones SUCKED that night...(as it happened most often than not in those days)

and the WHO, just 5 seconds of them doing 4 parts harmony and they had alrerady killed everybody off the stage

Slu 2008-05-16 01:42:59 PM
I always like old Who videos when The Ox would sing. He tore his voice up so much that in the end Roger would have to sing My Wife.

I also like how Pete's guitar is out of tune at the beginning and he fixes it without missing a beat.

sonnyboy11 2008-05-16 01:47:56 PM
This was the performance that made me a life long Who fan. I was blown away after seeing it in the Kids Are Alright so much that I went out and immediately bought as many Who albums as I could afford.

One of my favorite Who performances. Keith Moon was a frontman even behind the drums.

I think the headline is unnecessarily long. It could be cut down to this: "The Who put the Rolling Stones to shame" and still be entirely accurate.

For the Monterey Pop Festival back in 1968, The Who refused to play after Jimi Hendrix and insisted on playing before him, otherwise they weren't going to play. Apparently, they saw him perform in England and didn't want to have to compete against him. This was all before Hendrix and even the Who were big in the US. At the end of their set they smashed their guitars and left the audience in shock because they had never seen that before.

/love the Who
//listened to them since Grade 8
///the performance in "The Kids are alright" where Keith Moon smashed and kicked all his drums until he just had a cymbal left is better

Actually in that new doc they mention they were miffed at Hendrix for stealing their bit by burning his guitar. Its a really good doc and very awesome for any fan of the WHO!
