Democrats will make gains in Congress for the next 4 years. McCain has already won the presidency. The Democrats put up someone unelectable and people aren't going third party. McCain doesn't have to do anything but keep his mouth shut because he keeps saying scary things.

We just have to face reality. Hilary Clinton would have roundly defeated McCain, but the Dems put up someone who most Americans just won't vote for. W.VA showed that it's Hilary who connects with the Dems. I'm not a Hilary Supporter or a Democrat, but the writing is on the wall. The Democrat Party has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and we have to put up with at least 4 years of warmongering and domestic discord.

I am a huge Obama fan, but he is far too cerebral for the average American voter. Kerry had the same problem.

I don't really think that you can point to West Virginia as a bellwether for Democrats at large.

West Virginia is representative of the country at large, at least Middle America and the South. Democrats do ok in Middle America because they are moderate-to-conservative at the state level. While it would be nice to finally have a arch-liberal like Obama, there is zero chance of the country going in that direction.

Democrats should just accept the success they will have winning and retaining Congressional seats. Hopefully they can stifle the McCain war agenda, but they might as well give up on the presidential election. It's a lost cause. Obama can't defeat him. Hilary could, but the Democrats blew it. It's going to be a 1972 style defeat at worst. A 1988 style defeat at best.

TFA writer hangs his whole premise on that Mississippi special election, which is flat crazy. That "deeply conservative" district had a Democratic congressman for 53 years before Wicker was swept in with the class of '94. Jamie Whitten kept his gig because he was chair of the Appropriations committee and kept the pork flowing back home. Likewise, Wicker is Republican for Murtha - that is, he kept his job by bringing home loads and loads of pork.

Democrats will pick up seats, because only about half the Republicans in Congress got the message from '06: namely, lay off the earmarks, keep it in your pants, stay sober, and quit covering for idiots just because they have an R next to their name...and also that "Anybody But Barack" isn't going to work any better than "Anybody But Bush" in '04.

There was a period of time when Obama was gaining momentum fast, and Stealth Hippopotamus would come into every thread and say "it doesn't matter. Hillary can't be stopped. She is our next President. This doesn't mean anything." Now I've seen Suicidal Writer jumping into these threads, usually in a boobies post or close to it saying "It doesn't matter. John McCain has already won." Whatever. Apparently, as goes WVa (and its 5 electors), so goes America.

Why on earth would West Virginia, who's demographics are an oddity, who resemble the rest of the US less than almost any other state, be a signifier?

Why not, say, Ohio, or Texas?

Why doesn't the fact that democrat vs. republican registration is enormously disparate this year, and that independents are massively shifting towards democrats?

Is there something wrong with your brain?

Generation_D [TotalFark] 2008-05-16 09:44:07 AM
To be fair, Fox News has been ignoring the "massive increases in registrations by Democrats in 2008" angle since the start.

I'd say it's the primary season that showed it's Obama who connects with the Dems. You know... the primary season that he has won. My any metric. For confirmation of this, Here (new window) are the most recent national Obama-v-Clinton polls. Obama up by at least 7%.

Now, you could argue that the nation as a whole won't vote for who the Democrats preferred. But, there is *zero* question as to who the Democrats did prefer.

No, WV only demonstrated who the inbred, ill-read, rednecks connect with. WV didn't want Hillary. WV wanted another white male neocon that would also give them more gummint checks. Hillary qualifies. (The pants suits are not accidental)

Poor Redneck voters are outnumbered by poor Black voters.

They'll cancel each other's votes.

This leaves the educated Republicans and educated Democrats to decide the election. I sometimes believe that my wife and I are the only educated Republicans any more, so Obama will be the next POTUS.

I'm still supporting Ron Paul. I'm sick of liars.

The problem for Democrats is the fact that McCain is such a straight-talker. When McCain tells you something, you know he means it. Whether he's talking about Bush's Tax cuts, Abortion, Immigration, Torture, or his hatred of lobbyists and special interests, you know the man is telling you the truth and will be unwavering in his position.

When you contrast that to someone like Obama, he just doesn't even compare. It's almost like the man can't stop lying to the American people. He lies about the church he attended for 20 years with his racist pastor spouting anti-white rhetoric every Sunday. He lies about his Muslim past: about how he was born a Muslim and educated as a Muslim his entire life until he conveniently "converted" to Christianity when it was politically expedient to do so.

American's can't Trust Barack Obama. Period. They can trust John McCain. This is why Suicidal Writer is correct in his assessment of the upcoming election.

The Homer Tax

Let's look into McCain's flip flops:

But now even his record has become irrelevant, since to become the front runner McCain has jettisoned many of his past positions.

The Bush tax cuts: McCain voted against them as a senator, but now says he would make them permanent as president.

Immigration: he cosponsored a bill in 2005 to make it easier for those in the country illegally to become citizens, but now says that if his own bill-his own bill!-came to a vote on the Senate floor, he would vote against it.

Gun Control:
After Columbine, he called for more gun control; after Virginia Tech, he said more gun control was unnecessary.

Now onto an issue he can't seem to make his mind up about, abortion:

That confusion may be because McCain has sometimes seemed confused as well. In 1999, during a campaign swing through California, he challenged conservative orthodoxy and said he did not support overturning Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that found a constitutional right to abortion. He explained that a reversal could lead some women to undergo illegal and dangerous operations.

This is just the sort of nuanced position that has led to the widespread notion of McCain as maverick. But it didn't last long. After the right went nuts, McCain backtracked and said he did favor the repeal of Roe, adding, however, that it might lead to dangerous illegal abortions. A day later, his campaign issued a "clarification," and by that time McCain was saying that if elected president he would actually work to overturn the court's decision.

or my personal Favorite:

In 2000 he was asked about the Confederate battle flag, which flew from the capitol dome in South Carolina. McCain first called it a "symbol of racism and slavery," then backed off with a "clarification" that described it as a "symbol of heritage." Later he admitted, "I feared that if I answered honestly, I could not win the South Carolina primary. So I chose to compromise my principles."

THIS.

The only better candidate would be Dick Cheney. Cheney's unflagging opposition to the Iraq War and torture is eclipsed only by his heroic fight to protect our 4th amendment rights.

By comparison, the Democrats are pushing to legalize abortions through the 300th trimester.

The NEW! McCain 2006 is someone I wouldn't wipe my behind with.

Both the party and the candidate have veered so drastically from their roots, that they have created a new base of flag bearers- dominated by the the paranoids, the religious nutsos, the trigger happy and the occasional retard.

McCain was handed the GOP run by the GOP elites for one reason, to be tossed under the bus.

Nobody seriously thinks he'll be elected, well, maybe he does.

The GOP needs to be trashed, trounced, beat up and kicked in the head because they've allowed themselves to be hijacked by a religious cabal who have created a political environment where the US is a globally ignored superpower.

Even the whitest of the white trash understands this, and knows that to elect McCain and keep the status quo would be a huge mistake.

They'll either vote Democrat or note vote.

Obama, he'll win and he'll have the crappiest 4-8 years of his life trying to fix the republic, both financially and politically. China won't make it easy for him either, what's bad for you is good for them. What's bad for them is worse for you.

Russia too is in get-back mode, they're kinda pissed at the way the US (under Bush I and Clinton) allowed the country to fall apart and be taken over by capitalist gangsters. The neo-Czarist/Soviets now run the show and they're also happy to help keep the US down. Don't be expecting a handout or favor from those guys.

Obama is going to have to start with Europe, Canada and Mexico. Make a connection with the people in those nations to win back the sunshine. Rabid American nationalists are going to go nuts as they see the US move towards multi-lateralism again.
