We started it, we can make it end when we want to.

Crossing the Galactic plane in 2012 might be a wild ride... or it might make Y2K look exciting.

I doubt the Annunaki are returning though.

/Although we did lose 150k + people in disasters just in the last two weeks. That's a bad month by anyone's standard.

oldebayer [TotalFark] 2008-05-15 11:30:34 PM
At the rate he's going, I predict that by 2013 McCain will be unable to recall his own name.

I'm glad we're stopping Iraq from taking away our freedoms. You gotta nip these things in the bud, ya know?

I think the re-election campaign in 2012 had far more to do with it than any old Mexican calendar.

I'm gonna carve a big piece of stone that says the world is going to end in the year 4545 and bury it in my back yard.

In the year 4545
Ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to do
Nobody's gonna look at you

Tr0mBoNe: I'm gonna carve a big piece of stone that says the world is going to end in the year 4545 and bury it in my back yard.

In the year twenty-five twenty-five
If man is still alive
If woman can survive, they my find

In the year thirty-five thirty-five
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth
Tell no lies
Ev'rything you think, do and say
Is in the pill you took today

In the year forty-five forty-five
You ain't gonna need your teeth
Won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to chew
Nobody's gonna look at you

In the year fifty-five fifty-five
Your arms hangin' limp at your sides
Your legs got nothin' to do
Some machine's doin' that for you

In the year sixty-five sixty-five
You won't need no husband
Won't need no wife
You'll pick your son
Pick your daughter, too
From the bottom of a long glass tube

In the year seventy-five ten
If God's a-comin'
He oughta' make it by then
Maybe he'll look around himself, and say
"Guess it's time for the Judgement Day"

In the year eighty-five ten
God is gonna shake his mighty head
he'll either say,
"I'm pleased where man has been"
Or tear it down, and start again

In the year ninety-five ninety-five
I'm kind a wonderin'
If man is gonna be alive
He's taken ev'rything
this old earth can give
and he ain't put back nothin'

Now it's been ten thousand years
Man has cried a billion tears
For what? He never knew
Now man's reign is through

But through eternal night
The twinkling of starlight
So very far away
Maybe it's only yesterday

In the year twenty-five twenty-five
If man is still alive
If woman can survive they may find . . .

Hey, McCain, you can't just pull numbers out of your ass. Thanks for trying, but I call shenanigans.

I know more than a couple of people who take that load of horseshirt very, VERY seriously.
Unfortunately.

They're the same people who think the microwave "alters the DNA of food," among other charming myths.

I can already bet what his reelection slogan will be in 2012.

"Stay the course because we've only got one year to go until victory."

Party Boy [TotalFark] 2008-05-16 01:37:26 AM
I still remember going to somewhere in 1999, and people were standing outside. Something about nostradamus and his prediction about WWII. They asked me if i believed in that.

/believes he'll have another beer.

Jon Snow [TotalFark] 2008-05-16 01:37:50 AM
This baktun didn't mark the end of the world. There were plenty of boasts made by nobles about their reputations in years far surpassing it. And there are longer units of time used in the calendar that illustrate these doomsday scenarios had no basis in Mayan culture.

Rubbish.

Party Boy [TotalFark] 2008-05-16 01:38:03 AM
WWIII.

2013. Interesting choice. That year will either be the start of the next president's second term, or John McCain will be dead.

my best friend is probably the only person i actually know who falls in the 25% category

and he always likes to stress that the "war" is over, and that shiat went over like gangbusters

now we just have to win the occupation

i try to change the subject as soon as possible

I thought the whole point of dystopia was that your average person wasn't supposed to enjoy it?

We're going to win the attack, and then the operation, and then the mission, and then the war! And then we're going to move on to win the occupation, and then the clean up, and then the rebuilding, and then the reoccupation, and then the reconstruction! And then we're going on to Afghanistan to win the war on terror!

NEAAAAARGH!

A great pity for the Mayans their calendar didn't warn them about the collapse and destruction of their own civilization.

Or, and call me crazy, but it might pass practically unnoticed.

OlafTheBent: I doubt the Annunaki are returning though.

I don't think you can get very good odds in Vegas for that.

No, it isn't, by Earth's standards.

You know, she looks a lot prettier in that propaganda than she does in just about any other picture.

I like where this thread is going.

When it comes to fancy circular calendars, I'm more of an Olmec man myself. Those Mayan's just plagiarized all their long count shiat, just like every other culture syncretized (new window) the crap out of whatever civilization they displaced.

Step 1: Conquer the neighbors.

Step 2: Steal their religion/philosophy/technology, pretend like you invented it, burn all the old history books.

Step 3: Write new history books. Change the ethnicities (new window) of deities and heroes as necessary.

Step 4: Get conquered by neighbors.

Step 5: Repeat from step 2. Profit (new window)is a natural byproduct/motivation of steps 1,2, and 3.

I guess you missed it when he said "just like every other culture syncretized (new window) the crap out of whatever civilization they displaced."

but I'm sure the Mayans would thank you for your support.

The standard Friedman Unit of Six Months has been enhanced to Four Years. This makes it easier and less troublesome to push the date back, since it only has to be pushed back every Four Years, instead of every Six Months.

/I'd say that's progress, right there.

He'll spin it as "well, if we need to, we stay 100 years, but we won't need to because Jesus will broker peace."
