If I'm not mistaken, it's against federal law to gamble online. Something about phone lines and interstate commerce.

JewZeppy 2008-05-15 10:54:24 PM
So, they check credit card receipts for names of online gambling sites? They scan IP logs for people connecting to known gambling sites? They look in your window to see if you are on a gambling site?

Apparently I don't know a feasible method of enforcement. Other than forcing commercial establishments to monitor their wifi?

/Saw there were no prosecutions, yet.

I bet this gets overturned.

It won't.

It should be a summary offense, tops. There's no way in hell playing poker online should merit a greater punishment than drunken driving.

/legalize it and regulate it

I'll give you 2-1 odds on that, if the appellate court can cover the spread.

I don't gamble online, but this law is so ridiculously stupid it makes me want to scream even louder from the comfort of my own chair.

Bill Frist attached this as a rider to a safe ports bill, which means other congresscritters HAD to vote for it. A quick search of open secrets reveals that "recreation/live entertainment" makes his list of Top 5 donors. Quelle Surprise. This is such an obvious payout to his donor overlords it's not even funny. Seriously, how did our country get so farked up?

Luckily, Ron Paul is working on getting this overturned, so let's hope he's successful. Don't bet on it, though.

If it can't be taxed, there's a strong chance it will remain illegal.

Correct. Somehow outlawing internet poker makes our ports safer.

Name another activity that has been criminalized if you try to do it at home, but it is totally okay if you get together and do it with a bunch of strangers?

/maybe firing a gun?
//the poor state gov't wasn't getting a big enough piece of the pie.

Surgery.

/My business revenue depends on the casino down the street, so I'm really getting a kick...

A hurricane hits and you're farked, but our government is always Johnny on the spot with a solution for this kind of shiat.

Lee_Sharpe 2008-05-16 02:51:53 AM
Why is this asinine? I have no problems with people who want to play online poker, and I oppose this law.

But how is it unconstitutional? Seems like an area that the state legislature is free to regulate, they've just done so badly in this case. That doesn't mean the courts should solve it.

There are two kinds of brick-and-mortar casino in Washington:

- Tiny affairs that cover less than half a block, have maybe 20 card tables featuring nine kinds of Blackjack, old people at two Pai Gow tables, and maybe one or two Carribean Stud or Texas Hold 'Em games. Table limits for a Phase II house are $100, and there's no state provision for ever allowing it to increase.

- Casinos on reservations that don't contribute one effing dime to anyone's campaign.

If you lived here, subby, you'd know better.

They have made their laws, now let them enforce it.

I hate on-line poker, but it should not be illegal.

Let me get this straight... People throw their money away at online casinos? when the could be going to Indian Reservations and throwing it away there!

Damn.

Frankly I wonder if there is anything so pathetic as someone staying at home and playing rigged gambling games.
