Missing in Action, both The Who and Alice in Chains

Secret Agent X23 2008-05-13 10:28:28 PM
Zappa/Mothers (of Invention)

C'mon.

CSNY.

They couldn't even pick out a name, much less a singer. I'd think TFA was simply myopic but it's got a clip from "The Last Waltz" on the site featuring 1.5 members of CSNY.

Sliding Carp [TotalFark] 2008-05-14 12:02:41 AM
The Mekons.

I came here to say AIC

Fair_Poopsmith [TotalFark] 2008-05-14 12:33:10 AM
I came looking for The New Pornographers. Awesome.

monkeydoodledandy [TotalFark] 2008-05-14 12:36:06 AM
KISS

Godzilla [TotalFark] 2008-05-14 12:47:54 AM
No love for "The Cars"?

Ocasek and Orr were very different singers, yet each one is instantly recognizable in the various hits they sang.

"Genesis" was also sadly missing, although Gabriel and Collins did sing during different eras.

Secret Agent X23: Zappa/Mothers (of Invention)

Flo and Eddie (The Turtles) worked with Zappa for a while as well.

Bang Camaro FTW. Why the hell are they not in that list?

CravenMorehead: Bang Camaro FTW. Why the hell are they not in that list?

Because it's some arbitrary list that some "writer" pulled out of his ass to meet a deadline.

Epsilon [TotalFark] 2008-05-14 01:28:30 AM
I haven't even heard of half of those bands. And the other half I don't listen to. So I don't care.

Pretty much. Although I do listen to some of the other ones. Rarely though.

No Barenaked Ladies? No Queen?

Boo. The Onion is WAY too far up its own ass these days.

I came in here to suggest Barenaked Ladies. Good to know I wasn't alone there.

I'm disappointed at the lack of They Might Be Giants.

Another group that I'm hoping will be well-known enough to make lists like these some day is Tally Hall. They've got three singers, which beats a fair portion of the list, and their music is fantastic.

TheHopeDiamond 2008-05-14 02:27:30 AM
Let us not forget Styx.

or Hope Diamond :)

TheHopeDiamond 2008-05-14 02:28:25 AM
Whoops, forgot the Moody Blues, too.

creepy jackalope eye 2008-05-14 02:30:18 AM
Notably Missing for me are Sonic Youth, Big Star, Yo La Tengo, Low, and Squeeze.

ukiah 2008-05-14 02:30:28 AM
While I disagree with most of the choices on there, I greatly appreciated the fact that it was only 2 pages instead of a 16 page slideshow.

Juniper Jupiter [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-05-14 02:37:12 AM
Well...what about Chicago when Peter Cetera was still in it and Terry Kath was also before he became the first famous Darwin winnar?

TheTco 2008-05-14 02:52:51 AM
Some bands that didn't get mentioned, just some 60's stuff off the top of my head.

Buffalo Springfield
The Byrds
Cream
Fairport Convention
Love
The Rolling Stones
The Soft Machine
The Velvet Underground

And of course: Sonic Youth

Lots of other good ones mentioned in this thread already too.

It would be so ridiculously easy to do a better article than this. The Onion rocks. AV Club farking sucks.

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2008-05-14 03:11:27 AM
Lists like this always suck, but the inclusion of Fugazi and Hüsker Dü made this one suck less than most.

FiveByFive 2008-05-14 03:20:50 AM
Sadly omitted: Dance Hall Crashers (I heart Karina); Alkaline Trio; old (read: good) Bloodhound Gang; One-Eighty/Flight 180; Home Grown; Rancid; Mustard Plug; (old) Veruca Salt; Skankin' Pickle; X...

And to much lesser extents: 311; blink-182; later Reel Big Fish (kinda)...

Gunny Highway 2008-05-14 03:20:52 AM
The Clash

Mike and Joe FTW

zeph` [TotalFark] 2008-05-14 03:36:23 AM
Seeing Fugazi in second and the Drive-By Truckers included makes this list better than most of its kind.

FiveByFive: Alkaline Trio

Fail.

creepy jackalope eye: Yo La Tengo

Too bad Yo La Tengo are awful.

sonnyboy11 2008-05-14 03:41:09 AM
Pink Floyd?

Granted Roger Waters wrote 90% of the music and sang quite a bit. But Gilmour sang several of their best known songs.

Killer Miller 2008-05-14 03:49:10 AM
Triumph
Allman Brothers Band
Blue Oyster Cult
Night Ranger
The Outlaws

SnarfVader 2008-05-14 04:00:48 AM
B-52's. Just cause it wasn't a rock.

And of course I have to second the Barenaked Ladies.

No nightwish? Pah.

Cope_Freeland 2008-05-14 04:54:07 AM
Another music list that Parliament-Funkadelic has been left off .

Parliament - 3 lead singers: George Clinton, "Fuzzy" Haskins, Calvin Simon.

Funkadelic - at least 5 lead singers: Billy Nelson, Eddie Hazel, Garry Shider, Glen Goins, Junie Morrisonni

Ed Becker 2008-05-14 06:25:04 AM
Surprised, as posted before to not see the Stones. I love "Happy" and "Little T&A."

Cream would qualify, too.

Honorable Mention could go to Cheap Trick when Peterson does "I Know What I Want," or dig somewhat for their cover of "Waiting for the Man." And if you want to dig deeper, there's the Rick's vox on "World's Greatest Lover."

\My opinion, just gotta go do some stuff with the lawn...

musicky 2008-05-14 06:46:31 AM
No Supertramp? Their vocalists were practically polar opposites. You've got the quaint, folky voice who sort of slurs everything and the tenor of the Jon Anderson school who always sounds like he's about to cry or puke or perform some other excretory function. Seriously, tell me how they made that work.

dereksmalls 2008-05-14 07:48:10 AM
Mountain; West and Pappalardi

FlashHarry [TotalFark] 2008-05-14 08:13:55 AM
that list is full of fail without teenage fanclub. that is all.

gilmour and wright have a ton of writing or cowriting credits.

Glad The Band is on there.

Joed112784 2008-05-14 08:27:08 AM
Blink 182, although they couldn't really be considered a great band.

cheohee 2008-05-14 08:50:02 AM
Where's Gomez on this list? They're no more obscure than The New Pornographers (awesome), or Drive By Truckers (different kind of awesome). And what's up with leaving Alice in Chains off the list?

Good to see Hüsker Dü.

liquidlen [TotalFark] 2008-05-14 09:04:05 AM
No They Might Be Giants?

/I'm having a heart attack

irockalot 2008-05-14 09:13:33 AM
Sonic Youth
Devo
Pixies

The Third Man 2008-05-14 09:28:30 AM
I opened the second page thinking, "They're no way they're going to put Sloan on this list...."

patricula 2008-05-14 09:28:52 AM
How about some Depeche Mode and OMD?

// I'll dance to anything...

Go Fast Turn Left [TotalFark] 2008-05-14 09:34:14 AM
Dropkick Murphys.

TheBitterest [TotalFark] 2008-05-14 09:41:47 AM
Fair_Poopsmith: I came looking for The New Pornographers. Awesome.

That was the first band that popped into my head.

Nice of Sloan to get a mention as well.

hbk72777 2008-05-14 09:43:53 AM
Type O Negative

Tears for Fears
Eagles
Beastie Boys

amindtat 2008-05-14 09:46:44 AM

mightybaldking 2008-05-14 09:54:47 AM

Good job, che! That's what I came to say. I was a little shocked when I noticed your post.

nirwana [TotalFark] 2008-05-14 10:06:16 AM
Fugazi???

Maybe if your idea of a great band is a bunch of egotistical nazis who insist you sit prim and proper in your seat without moving while listening to their great 'art'.
