Good god, the years have not been kind to Robert Smith.

Learn from this, children. Emo does not do a body good.

433 [TotalFark] 2008-05-13 06:08:12 PM
Then I will not view them. I like myself un-cut, and I like the Cure as they froze into my memory in the early 90's.

It does seem a little sad as the band kicks off their tour opener in Fairfax, Virginia on May 9, 2008.

c'mon, everybody gets old--the first cure album was in 1979, for heaven's sake. many of you weren't even born

paulseta [TotalFark] 2008-05-13 06:39:36 PM
Yikes!!! Saw them on tour in 2004 or thereabouts and Smith did not look anything like that.

I want to be old
And creek by the fire
I want to smell of rotting wood
It's all I desire
I want my joints to seize up
I want my legs to ache
I want my eyesight to fail
I want my skin to flake
To be old
I want to be old
I want false teeth
And not be able to chew
I want to be senile
A centigenarian fool
I want lots of wrinkles
Want my hearing to go
I want to be ignored
And I want to be slow
To be old
I want to be old

The Cure do not sound remotely "Goth"

Please note:

I said SOUND.

Sound is the actual means of correctly labeling a genre if you must.

Cure is much closer to Smiths,Echo and the Bunnymen etc than to Bauhaus or Death Cult etc.

emo and straight-edge are different. fugazi is definately not emo. You can't call anything before 1995 emo.

Fugazi?? Emo??? Surely you jest, sir! Much closer to post-hardcore/post-punk.

The first true emo band that I can recall was Sunny Day Real Estate in 1992...Mineral came shortly thereafter and perfected the sound. Then all these whiny kids came around and farked it all up.

What about Alternative? I've seen that genre applied to their name hundreds of times.

runslothrun 2008-05-13 09:28:04 PM
the cure were part of a an over-all scene called "new romantics". not punk, not emo, not alternative. see also, duran duran (for an idea on how broad that spectrum was).

basic difference between the new romantics and the goths is simple:

one may look 'death like' and the other smelled 'death like'.

also, one could pay for drinks and the other only ever got water from the bar.

but, no, not punk...not emo. definately not smelly.

Jeezus farking Christ. People sure do throw that stupid word Emo around so damn much these days. I have no clue how you can call a band whose seminal catalog was from the 70's and 80's some lame-ass word like Emo. I never even heard that gay word until MySpace came onto the scene.

In those close-up shots, Robert Smith looks like a chubby version of Steve Harris from Iron Maiden. Which goes to prove that all Englishmen eventually look the same when they get old.

I couldn't care less how they've aged. When they make music that good, you can overlook their physical flaws. What? Are we supposed to fark them or something? Leave that to the chicks.

I don't think "emo" holds much water describing a music scene/clothing fashion/whatever (much like the word "punk" having a specific meaning); lots of "emo" bands don't even like the term - but if one had to pick a main "proto-emo" group, I'd say Rites of Spring (featuring future Fugazi members Guy Picciotto and Brendan Canty). SDR's also up there in the next "wave."

/ don't like labels
// Fugazi isn't "hardcore" music (nor is it meant to be)
/// damn, fell for the labels again

I seem to remember that The Cure was going to quit recording after "Disintegration" because they thought they couldn't do better than that album.

I guess hindsight is always 20/20, especially here.

Yes, because you have to be at least 40 years of age to know whether or not people arguing over nonsensical and completely worthless crap is annoying or not.

Also, I'm on your lawn, grandpa.

Robert Smith isn't too fond of the whole goth label. I remember an interview many years ago where he said "We're not goth. We don't sing about bats in belfrys.".

/Rites of Spring were the first emo band. Throw Dag Nasty in there as well.

xrayspx 2008-05-14 01:50:27 AM
I don't care what they look like, a 3 hour, 4 encore show spanning 30 years of career kind of makes up for a lot. Plus, looked fine to me.

I saw the Cure playing the European leg of this tour and can honestly say it was AMAZING!! They played a 3 hour set with 3 encores which included 6 songs from Three Imaginary Boys. Wow, just wow!

Ok so Fat Bob still shambles around like a huffy teenager, but they sound great and never have a seen a band do such a thorough trail through their back catalogue.

\Lovesongs brought me out in the biggest goosebumps while remembering my years of teenage angst. No, not emo, just an average teenager falling in and out of love with intensity.
\\intensity that seems to fade in your 30's right?
