That's nice, but I will wait until it comes out on thepiratebay.org's website. They often have a discount for new releases.

steveurkel: dare i hope that the new album is worth a damn?

After being promised that St. Anger was a return to the "hardcore" Metallica and being SEVERELY let down, I doubt this album will amount to much. I'd actually be very happy to eat some crow if I turn out to be incorrect.

This is the same band that used to brag about getting computer printouts to make sure their plectums were hitting the strings at the same time?

Went there this morning and heard some of what they were playing; it's not Kill 'em All, but it's not Load either.

Most. Appropriate. Title. Evar.

Do enough coke and you can get deviated plectums, those are hard to come back from.

How much for a tear-soaked hankie and vengence pillow-sword from "Talk It Through" time?

Dude seriously WTF 2008-05-13 01:11:31 PM
There are certain bands that people support financially because they agree with their ideas about music, musicians and the fight to wrestle artist rights back from the industry moguls- NIN is a good example.

There are also bands that, even though some of the music is good, are still villified because of their attitudes towards their fanbase- and that would be where Metallica falls.

Regardless of their musical ability, Metallica will always be the whining Napster biatches.

The real reason for that bus crash was that the driver was busy coding a free mp3 sharing software package while driving.

True, the Internet didn't exist just yet, a testament to his unsung brilliance.

That new stuff sounds decent. I'll reserve judgment until I go to the record store and purchase obtain the new CD.

b2theory [TotalFark] 2008-05-13 03:29:42 PM
It should be descent considering the departure of Bob Rock and the arrival of Rick Ruben.

I do wish they would pull the curtain back over the wizard a bit. I now know I don't want to see "behind the scenes" ever again. Let me know when: The album is done, the tour is coming to my town, and when they die.

Does it allow me to sign up for shiatting in Lars' mouth? No? Then why the fark would I want to visit their website?

At least they have an innovative business model.

Everybody loves to biatch and moan about having to pay a few bucks for music. I guess musicians should just perform their craft for free and entertain us all while not getting a paycheck.

I'm no defender of the RIAA, I hate them as much as anybody does. But I can see the sensibility in musicians charging a few bucks for their creations.

Some people argue, "Oh, but they're millionaires. They don't need the money." True they don't need it, but they're entitled to it. The reason they're rich is because they're good at what they do and they've worked hard for decades. Now that they don't need the money doesn't mean they should start working for free. If you like the music and you want it, pay them what it's worth. It's not going to break your bank account (And if it is, then you shouldn't be buying music).

"..Suicide but I'm already dead..."

\some catchy riffs in those previews..
\\expecting Black Album meets Load kinda stuff..but am hoping it is AJFA/MOP meets the Black Album.
\\\sometimes i just wish Lars would shut his piehole.
\\\\Let Trujillo write some riffs..

most people seem to have bad memories:

Kill em All (1983) - mostly great but songs like "hit the lights" and "motorbreath" sound dated even for '83

Ride the Lightning (1984) - already straying from the path with the saccharine-sweet acoustic intro. "For whom the bell tolls" is ALRIGHT, but only because of Cliff's additions. Fade to Black is just ballad crap. Escape (the Pina Collada Song) and Trapped Under Ice are both pretty much throwaways as they were written in the studio because they didn't have enough material. The instrumental, though, is Godly. It should be noted that all the good songs, even the instrumental, were written while Mustaine was still in the band. So half the album sucks, and the other half was probably written by Mustaine.

Master of Puppets (1986) - It's hard to find a lot of fault on this one. I don't care too much for the ballady Sanitarium, but it's ok. It was fast in places, sludge-like slow in others, the songs had bite and they sounded like they were still hungry and gave a flip. Has to be their most accomplished work.

...And Justice For All (1988) - The beginning of self-importance. Overthinking and overcomplicating runs rampant. Were they trying to be technical or push themselves? Who knows. The album would have been pretty damn good had it been 20 minutes shorter and HAD A BASSIST PERFORM ON IT. Newstead needs to sue til they remix that thing, maybe it would be at least listenable then. Could have been great, instead this one is mediocre.

Metallica (1991) - Game over for metalheads. There's some great songs on this record, but this is a hard rock album. Bob Rock should be castrated, have miracles bestowed upon him to regrow testicles, and be castrated again. When he suggested they record james's personal 4-track song "nothing else matters" they forgot to call it "nothing else matters besides money and fame." But as an album it's hard to call it bad at all. But your metal cards have been revoked.

Load (1996) - Let's get real, again, half this album is pretty good (The Thorn within is one of the best songs they ever put to tape in my opinion), but none of it is metal. The other half is just uninspired and sucks.

Reload (1998) - You ever write about 25 songs at once and split em between 2 albums? I bet you'd have some duds in there. Wouldn't it be crazy if one of the albums was nothing but bad songs?

garage days whenever - Bob seger isn't great, but you made an 'alright for radio' song terrible. And thin lizzy is a religion, man. James, you are no Phil Lynott. Nice lounge singer suits.

s&M - dude, we don't even care. Orchestrate a bowel movement.

St. Anger - that fist on the cover is red because it's been terrorizing your anus

So what does all this mean? It's been 20 years since anyone (at least a metal fan, or METAL-lica fan) should have given a crap about these douche-nozzles.

That being said I really hope these multi-millionaires can show me I'm wrong and make a kick-ass album. C'mon, you're rich guys, practice you're instruments and THEN spend more than 2 minutes coming up with riffs.

Kali-Yuga 2008-05-13 05:00:19 PM
Should have called it quits when Cliff died.. I'll download it and pass out as many free copies as I can just as a fark you to Metallica over being douchebag sellouts.

Why do they insist on doing the music they want to, instead of the music I want them to?

Bhasayate [TotalFark] 2008-05-13 05:15:28 PM
Seems alright, nothing that special. I'll pick it up used at the pawn shop in a few years for two bucks, perhaps, if it doesn't totally suck.

Is Kirk playing any solos, or is it still too much work for him?

I haven't liked Metallica since Newsted joined the band.

I was actually hanging out with a few guys from Flotsam and Jetsam last saturday night, and pretty much everyone was in agreement they actually got better after Newsted left.

Ahh, Metallica. Able to remove the chrome from a ball hitch purely through suction.

(Why would I want to listen to every mistake they make? I already downloaded St. Anger. That was nothing BUT mistakes.)

(Along with Reload, Load and The Black Suck Album.)

I can believe it. Newsted sucked. I lived in Phoenix and went to see them on his "coming home" show. Newsted was a drunken mess. His playing never impressed me. No wonder he was always buried in the mix.

marksman 2008-05-13 09:45:48 PM
BTW, funny story. After Newsted was gone, I contacted Metallica for an audition. This guy emailed me and wrote "they're not taking auditions from fans".

I wrote, "I'm not a fan. I'm a bassist looking for a gig."

For some reason, I never heard back from them.

I still chuckle when I think about it.

Since no one's bothered to link to it yet, I'll do it.

Here's a small clip of a new song which happens to be pretty damn good.

Mustaine, Black Album, Napster, hair cuts.

There, it's out of the way. Now maybe we can talk about the article or at least a topic less than 10 years old.

Okay, I'll play along. Did you guys hear about this new site called Napster? Apparently it allows you to download songs for free. It seems that Lars Ulrich didn't like that and decided to sue. Oh holy mother, I'm so upset. fark you Metallica.
