This would be sad if the song wasn't so GREAT!

I've got a Razzle in me pocket.

I first heard this song at the drive-in movies, long ago. It blew me away then, still does.

Loved that song off of my Live Stiffs album...

Ah Stiff records what a great label. Used to have a "if it ain't Stiff to ain't worth a fark" shirt back in the day.

Think my Dad disposed of it for me.

"New Boots & Panties", & "Do It Yourself" are classic albums. They make me grin like an idiot from start to finish.

If you wanna see an entire concert, the DVD "Hold On To Your Structure" (1985 concert at the Hammersmith Odeon) is awesome. Band's tight, sound mix is terrific, and though you don't actually hear his guitar playing much, Wilko Johnson flies about onstage with his guitar like a coked-up lunatic. It's friggin' hilarious. A friend of mine dubbed Wilko "the guitard". Great stuff.

Saw him open for Lou Reed in Houston in 1978. Good clean fun...

After reading about them for years, it wasn't until the mid-80's that I finally started listening to some old Dr. Feelgood stuff. Which was great!

Well, I have a DVD to track down then. Ian Dury was a breath of somewhat twisted fresh air back then. Add this to the story above that the Feelies are coming back...it's a decent Monday after all.

/havin' a hankerin' for Reasons To Be Cheerful, Part 3

First gig and first LP - Ian Dury and the Blockheads with Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band in '78, already had New Boots and Panties at home with the printed inner sleeve.

1. Do It Yourself.
2. New Boots,
3. 5000 Weeks Holiday.
4. The album with Spasticus on...
5. Laughter.

/tidy in my digs.

Thanks for the "Dr. Feelgood" tip. I checked 'em out & it's some good stuff. Kind of in a retro Dave Edmunds/Nick Lowe vein.

A friend of the singer in a band I was in was married to Lee Brilleaux, who like Ian, is sadly deceased. Some of their live stuff was especially great. Used to get Trouser Press, NME and Melody Maker in the late 70's working in record stores, so I knew about Wilko and Dr. Feelgood already, just hadn't heard them.

I had the "worth a fark", and also, a "fark art, let's just dance" one. Got them at a Plasmatics show at CBGB's. I wore them until they were tatters. Often to Dead shows, loved the contrast.

Sex, and drugs and rock 'n' roll, is all my brain and body need
Blockheads unite!

When I was four (1978), my dad was a DJ at KU's college-radio station, and was one of the two guys there who played punk. As such, he got to be the ambassador whenever punk bands swung through the Midwest. One of my early memories was meeting Ian Dury, who was genuinely kind to me (called me a "roit up lil nippa!" according to my parents), and who defused the embarrassment of the other adults at the station get-together who couldn't believe that my dad (pardon me -- "My Old Man") would be so lame as to bring a kid along.

Gonna listen to "Reasons to Be Cheerful, Pt. 3" today and raise a glass to Ian.

Spasticus Autisticus!
Saw the Blockheads, sans Ian, a couple of years ago.
Phill Jupitus was OK, but its a long way from OK to Ian Dury.

I saw one once I wish I had snagged: "Try anything but folk dancing and incest"

And, yeah, Live Stiffs is a great one -- finally got another copy recently to replace one that I'd lost.

Bummed.

Why?

1) I didnt know he was dead
and
2) It wasnt as good as I remembered

(However, Friday night I got to sing 'I knew we had to say goodbye...' to some friends who had never heard it)

Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Is all my brain and body need
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Are very good indeed

Keep your silly ways or throw them out the window
The wisdom of your ways, I've been there and I know
Lots of other ways, what a jolly bad show
If all you ever do is business you don't like

Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Is very good indeed

Every bit of clothing ought to make you pretty
You can cut the clothing, grey is such a pity
I should wear the clothing of Mr. Walter Mitty
See my tailor, he's called Simon, I know it's going to fit

Here's a little piece of advice
You're quite welcome it is free
Don't do nothing that is cut price
You know what that'll make you be
They will try their tricky device
Trap you with the ordinary
Get your teeth into a small slice
The cake of liberty

Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex, drugs, rock, roll
Sex, drugs, rock, roll
