If I'm not mistaken it is the Asian giant hornet, Vespa mandarinia. Here (new window) is the Wiki for it.

Here in VA, we have these bees called Bell Hornets or Japanese Hornets. Which is similar to the wasp above. They are quite nasty and can be aggressive little fellers. as 2-inch long bees go

Late last summer I witnessed such a battle firsthand. The bee crash landed beside me on the grass with two wasps locked onto it. It tore them both apart with it's jaws before being swarmed and overwhelmed by wasp backup.

I'd just lit a joint when this happened, one of those trippy stoned-experiences you never forget.

You can shoot those suckers out of midair with a BB gun.

moxxiecillin 2008-05-11 06:50:22 PM
I don't have much to add except that bees and wasps scare me so much more than spiders. I'd take clock-spider any day over the wasp that PseudoNic posted. Heck, when I lived in Texas, the red hornets there scared the crap out of me - much more so than the scorpions we'd find in the bathroom.

Tony326 2008-05-11 06:50:26 PM
I've seen at least two better three-headed bees today.

Shiat, that thing's REAL?!
It's not the length that bothers me (we have wasps/bald-faced hornets around), but the fact that it looks like a farking bus with wings.

puffy999: Shiat, that thing's REAL?!

Yeah, very real. You can find videos of it on YouTube. There is one where 30 of those bastards take out an entire colony of bees. It is kinda scary.

dreamcrusher 2008-05-11 07:00:20 PM
Broz_Tito: Bees VS Wasps

Wow. 30,000 dead in 3 hours. And to think that this happens to countless colonies around the world everyday. And that's just bees.

Nature's little Holocausts are more terrifying then anything humanity could ever do.

libbyshome 2008-05-11 07:04:27 PM
Maybe someone should clone it.

Bee, bat and frog colonies as dying everywhere.
It's quite scary.

ultraholland 2008-05-11 07:05:32 PM
Broz_Tito: Bees VS Wasps

The Chinese honey bees have learned to lure the wasp scouts into their hive rather than letting it fly off. The wasp knows it has to leave and get backup but it can't seem to resists the allure. Once inside, it will strike at the nearest bee, signaling the attack. The other honey bees swarm onto the scout, piling up and vibrating furiously, raising the temperature. The honey bees can withstand the heat, but the wasp cooks. The colony is safe, for now.

While I was watching that, I realized that would make a kickass beginning to a movie or game. Something like a peaceful metropolis city is wiped and "cleansed" by like 30 unstoppable machines and plot goes from there.

A few months ago at work i had, out of the blue, a wasps head fall on the table infront of me. Creeped me out but i decided to take a closer look. out of the blue the mandibles and antenas started moving. They didn't stop till about 45 min later.
