Actually , I don't think a National Bycicle Dealers Association actually does exist.

strangeguitar 2008-05-11 02:55:03 PM
I only know of them from their old "Get On Your Bikes and Ride" program.

The fact that there's an association for Bicycle dealers is hard to imagine?

Here is a scoop for ya: most anything that is sold probably has a dealer association of some kind. Imagine that!

It is hard to imagine. I could believe such a thing existing in a European country, but riding bicycles is Un-American. Anybody using a bicycle is
(1) Probably not morbidly obese
(2) Probably doesn't own an SUV
(3) Physically exerting themself

None of the above is something that REAL Americans subscribe to.

And anyways, we should be riding bikes to and from work! sure, most of us don't live within immediate riding distance, but everywhere is within biking distance if you have the time! And have you ever tried riding during the winter months? two words: big fun. nothing says exercise like bundling up to bike on ice!

A little defensive, are we?

Minneapolis/ St. Paul is ranked second in terms of bicycle commuters, so there goes half your whine.

Drive if you want, but spare us your victimhood.

I'm a bicycle mechanic, and I've definitely seen an increase in the number of "normals" (that is, people who have regular jobs, aren't punk rock squatter kids, poor people or DUI-suspended drunks, etc.) coming in looking for bikes to commute to work on. I don't usually ask them why, but we can safely presume it's because of high gas prices and/or environmental concerns.

Anyway, how did this headline get a green light? What on earth is this supposed to be about, and why would anyone who isn't a bike dork like me care?

Maybe on a commuter bike, or on your training wheels for the winter. Otherwise, myself and all the roadies I know use lightweight clinchers like the Pro Race 3 or the GP4000, and even some fancy cotton-and-rubber stitch-up for races.

Commuting in the winter isn't as bad as you might think.

chicago bike winter (new window)

As an aside... are you one of those pompous assholes that thinks because you are in a car you own the road and swerve at bike commuters?

tbf, commuting is what the article is talking about.
I'll take your word for it though, I'm no racer, just a half-commuter/half-guy-who-likes-to-ride-around-for-fun. I'm not sure I could stand to wear lycra, sorry.

I can vouch for this. In the last couple weeks I got my Specialized Crossroads Cruz tuned up, a rack installed in back, and a pair of grocery-carrying panniers. Time to use less gas and exercise more.

I actually have Dugast tires on my cross bike. I picked them up cheap though, from a shop going out of business. Normally, the tires would cost more than the rest of my bike.

And yes, I am poor - I'm a bike mechanic.

Works fine where I come from. Even "normal" people ride their bikes when it's snowy/icey. It's not really that hard;
(a) Wear warm clothes
(b) Take all the same road precautions you do when driving, with regard to brakes, steering, stopping distances, etc.

Why are they morons? Because they're comfortable in the cold? WTF kind of logic is that? I do a lot of mountain biking in the winter (I really can't commute on a bike with all the equipment I haul). Biking on snow is really fun, about 25-30 degrees is the best but I've ridden colder and enjoyed it.

As for the practical part, I know a lot of people who commute in the winter and enjoy the hell out of it. Pittsburgh is a good biking town and even with all the hills, an enjoyable place to ride year round.

It is practical. I do it all the time. If the weather on any given day is too bad I take the bus. I save a great deal of money. I stay in great shape. I have fun.

Fresh air is good. Sunshine is good. Excercise is good.

Angry guys in cars are bad.

I might ride to work if:

a) I didn't fear for my life with the SUV soccer moms punting me into the weeds.
b) My place of work would allow firearms on site.

/have a good jorb in a not so good part of town
