Which just happened to be of the GOP nominee and his wife, both smiling and looking pleasant, and not something random like Ben Bernanke looking all serious.

On a logo with no other footage of any kind, and comprised of geometric shapes with no reason to include ANY news footage of any kind?

The really funny thing about this is that it's been proven in scientific studies that subliminal advertising doesn't work.

The guy who did it first (in a movie theater he owned) back in the 1950's claimed it worked so he could sell the rights to use the idea to other advertisers. He got rich from it, but who cares? That was back in an era when you could claim stuff and it'd be taken without much investigation as face value. More recent scientific studies have proven that the entire idea is bunk.

Of course, McCain appears in the video a little bit longer than just a couple frames, which might make it more effective, but seriously. Resorting to what is known to be an ineffective tactic just smells of desperation.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. I agree, it's pretty funny, but they used some footage from their parent company and associate Fox News. And they, shockingly, obsess over McCain like drooling lapdogs.

I'm not denying the slant. They could have a collective picture of the Supreme Court, or stock footage of Iraq, or even a puppy. But they chose McCain. So yes, they have a defined bias, but I doubt it was designed as a subliminal ploy.

I am not sure how the isolated flash by of a newsmaker is really subliminal advertising. If there was some other factor found, like a picture of a sex organ or eagle by his face, that might be something else.

/Wilson Bryan Key is the man for those who believe in this.

you're still living in the 70's bub. Reagan and the GOP got rid of that whole idea of "objectivity and fairness in media" legislation and then proceeded to buy up markets and spread the propaganda.
when your party represents large corporations they can get positive press this way.

Headso 2008-05-11 08:36:16 AM
Shadowknight: Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Isn't a lame attempted at a subliminal message "the cigar" here? Just because some farkers believe it doesn't work doesn't mean there is evidence out there to the contrary. And even if you "know" it doesn't work, does that automatically mean that the guy who threw this intro together does too?

Farkers seem to fall all over themselves trying to find the most innocuous reasons for everything less they be branded a "conspiracy theorist"

someone probably had the wrong video queued up after the logo. It looks like the logo wipes away to reveal video which the anchors would usually talk over, but someone realized they weren't supposed to have that video queued for this segment and the did that harsh cut right to the anchors.

if this happened more than once then yeah it might be a retarded attempt at a subliminal message, if not its just a production gaffe.

Looking at the trees I missed the forest. Could have been Mccain, hillary and Obama flashing by. Instead a nice picture of McCain and his wife. They might be right.

Sumo Surfer [TotalFark] 2008-05-11 08:51:50 AM
Khabi715: ... it's been proven in scientific studies that subliminal advertising doesn't work.

Remember when those Konami slot machines were taken out of commision for flashing a winning jackpot combination on the screen for 1/5th of a second? The symbols flashed for long enough to register in the visual cortex and would supposedly excite gamblers without them actually knowing it. Konami blamed it on a computer glitch and the machines were removed.

It is possible to see something without knowing it.

There's an online test somewhere that rapidly flashes a bunch of random letters on the screen. During the test, you are supposed to remember the letter displayed immediately after an R is flashed on the screen. It's impossible because of some brain fart phenomenon.

As further proof that you can see something without knowing it, I often tell my boss "I see", even though I don't know what the fark he's talking about.

Oh, well, now that's scientific. No chance whatsoever that trying to advertise such a product would lead to similar approaches.

Let's see 'em try the same thing using apples and a 'subliminal' approach of hydropnically grown lunar fruit.

If there had been one or two similarities, I'd be with you. But the images and concepts were complex and almost identical.

The MSM is not an agent of good serving the people anymore.
They are part of the machine.
The sooner everyone realizes that. the sooner it gets fixed.

You cannot have a strong republic with an uninformed or misinformed electorate.

I hate news teasers that don't tell you anything about the story! What is this crap? Did someone hate on McCain? Did McCain use hate speech?

What? I want to know!

Oh for fark's sake... They came out of an animated logo with an alpha-channeled wipe, and went to a slate of McCain. It was obviously a mistake, and they cut to the camera shot immediately. They probably had the McCain slate up and ready to go, and it was an easy bump to the camera shot.

I dislike McCain as much as the next guy, but the person that made this video is a Senior Idiot 3rd Class.

Plus he's wearing blue jeans and what appears to be a suit jacket rather than simply a sports coat showing that he is simultaneously wealthy but in touch with the working man. His sweater when coupled with the jeans implies a down to earth rather than effete intellectualism and, finally, his smug smile shows that no matter how you dress him, he's still an asshole.

Jesus you people are stupid, you can see the edit right after the sweep and you can obviously make out that mccain is standing in front of an arizona flag. It was probably leading into him giving a speech in front of his home state but the edit changed it to make it appear as something different.

#1 defining characteristic of fascism:

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
