Benedict expressed concern that human life risks losing its value in today's culture and worried that sex could "transform itself into a drug" that one partner had to have even against the will of the other.

Unlike the good old days, when rape was just a sport, a business proposal, or a means of relieving the stress of daily hypocrisy and tax evasion.

There are sex addicts out there. There are porn addicts out there. Anytime someone is addicted to something it has the potential of ruining their life. While I don't agree with everything the Pope/Catholic church says, the drug comment doesn't seem too outrageous.

Of course, I'm just being logical. Back to screaming about how he's a dumbass because he's associated with religion.

I know these were jokes, but the more I thought about it, the less I agree with this statement. It all depends on the quality you want for both sex and drugs. You can drive to the seedy part of town for a twenty dollar hooker as well as a twenty dollar bag of whatever is your pleasure. You might not feel so good about yourself afterwards, but you get what you pay for.

And free is always the best kind.

Just a point of reference, and from what I understand, that is where the really good X started showing up in bars. I was dating a girl at TCU in the late 80's and it was pretty easy to get it from the bartender if you knew how to ask, and how much to slide him when you got your beer and a folded bar napkin.

TheFlyingGoat 2008-05-11 04:58:43 AM
ManatOrr: Your logic is broken.

Explain how. Are you refuting the fact that there are sex addicts out there? Any doctor can tell you the chemical changes a person experiences during sex can be as addictive as a drug.

What about the fact that being a sex addict can ruin a person's life? There are many books, websites, etc detailed how sex addiction has ruined people's lives, so I'm not sure this can be refuted.

The Pope's quote (yay for rhyming) about sex becoming like a drug was VERY generalized. As a result, when comparing sex to drugs in a very generalized way, they are very similar.

What part of that logic fails?

**snerk** I was gonna mention "Shaking hands with oneself" or "Tickling the Tiny Tomato out of the Taco" always counted as Sex in my book. Just 'cause it's not with another person doesn't mean you can't still have fun!

So that's your definition of "like a drug"? That it's "addicting"?

addicting: To occupy (oneself) with or involve (oneself) in something habitually or compulsively: The child was addicted to video games. (Dictionary.com)

If something has the ability to become compulsive or habitual (such as cleaning) and to ruin one's life, then it's "like a drug"?

Ok, then your logic isn't flawed; I reject the basic premise that your logic is based on.

Does that make you happy? Your logic is good; you're just crazy.

The worst thing to happen to Christianity was to invert the Jewish attitudes towards sex. Which has lead to one of a whole series of things that Jesus would've found utterly baffling. Which, you know, is a big problem.

Jgok [TotalFark] 2008-05-11 05:10:53 AM
You know, the pope talking about sex aside, I just had to comment on this...

FTA: " ... artificial procreation methods, which in the Church's view offend the dignity of life and go against Vatican teaching that the only way to conceive a child is through intercourse between husband and wife."

The popes are just trying to piss everybody off, aren't they? "You can't have sex unless you're married, and you can't have babies unless you have sex, but even if you're married and having sex, some of you can't have babies anyway."

Now granted, I'd certainly like to see less procreation going on in the world, but I really don't think that denying birth control to those who can't afford and/or don't want children while at the same time denying children to those who CAN afford (as artificial conception ain't cheap) and DO want them is a very smart position to hold on to. If that's the path they advocate, then they want a lot of children being raised on welfare and/or in foster homes while a lot of couples are childless and unhappy.

Birth control is cheap, kids aren't. Fark the pope, he should be a more socially responsible leader to his followers.

Jgok: Birth control is cheap, kids aren't. Fark the pope, he should be a more socially responsible leader to his followers.

Oh worse, the whole position is based on stuff made up out of thin air. The usually cited Biblical supports? Don't work. Wether it's the opposition to birth control, abortion, IVF or something else. Nevermind there's the social element, that by opposing birth control you risk making the poor even poorer.

ManatOrr [TotalFark] 2008-05-11 05:21:23 AM
Jgok: Birth control is cheap, kids aren't. Fark the pope, he should be a more socially responsible leader to his followers.

It's not the Pope's job to be a socially responsible leader to his followers. It's his job to keep the church in business. The more often he can make stupid, controversial, asinine comments like these, the more often he can keep the church in the limelight.

Leaders are never responsible. A 'leader' does not lead, he follows, if even that.

Leaders do not normally try to change their views to anticipate coming trends. They play it safe, and they wait until their followers have overwhelmingly adopted a trend before they themselves adopt it.

I was specifically addressing the part where it asked (in a concerned tone) if a person's sex-life would "include the risk of pregnancy".
