I vaguely remember it being 4 billion when I was a kid (80s), did it actually go up that much?

Since I don't believe in foolish superstitions (666 isn't the right number anyway), I will still panic slightly. People need to stop overpopulating this place with their farking crotch fruit. Especially in places where land is at a premium, food doesn't grow, and/or the leaders are retarded. Yes, that includes the USA. And Canada. Not Argentina, though.

Lars The Canadian Viking: I vaguely remember it being 4 billion when I was a kid (80s), did it actually go up that much?

YES.

What's interesting is that while the last 2.5 Billion of people took 20 years the next 2.5 Billion will take probably only half of that, a decade. And then the next 2.5 will only take half of that, 5 years. And then half of that...

I'm incredibly frightened by our population. It's huge, and it is only sustained because of incredible advances in farming technology. I'm just wondering what it is going to be like to hit that wall. Rest assured it will be during my lifetime.

/sad slashy :(

We won't keep growing-- many countries have already curbed their population growth, and it's catching on it others.

4 billion is more than enough.

Last came Anarchy: he rode
On a white horse, splashed with blood;
He was pale even to the lips,
Like Death in the Apocalypse.

And he wore a kingly crown;
And in his grasp a sceptre shone;
On his brow this mark I saw -
'I AM GOD, AND KING, AND LAW!'

And we can't feed them all, this is the crux of the problem.

Anyone have any ideas? Dwarf wheat was pretty good. That fed 1-2 billion and won a Nobel prize for the inventor too...

Maybe Arid Rice?

And their were those who witnessed it, and they fell to the ground in worship proclaiming that it was good, and the cereal was called Life.

By going with what they said, and then thinking of all of the backwoods places that have never filled out a census across the globe, all of the families who have undeclared children, all of the societies that are rarely touched upon by foreign census takers, all of the countries that are too messed up by war or corruption to get a clear indication of how many people they have, etc.
I don't have a number, but the fact that I don't doesn't mean theirs is correct.

Woah, woah, woah. You're saying people should stop their activity because of scarcity? Never took any economics classes, have you?

The prices of things will go up if demand goes up. No shortage will exist because people will ration themselves or choose substitutes. So long as that kind of activity isn't subsidized, then there's no problem.

I'll just come out and say that the following things are subsidies that ought to be eliminated if anyone is serious at all about overpopulation:

-Welfare
-Foodstamps
-Affirmative Action
-State Insurance
-Socialized medicine
-Government housing
-Government roads
-Government schools (kind of a big one)
-Anything else that constitutes a transfer payment and/or prevents the buyer from bearing the full costs of whatever good or service he/she is using
