(Daily Mail) Spiffy The world's largest Lego tower. Seeing as how this is in England though, it probably has police cameras hidden in it   (dailymail.co.uk) divider line 47

It's more likely than you think.

It would have been more impressive if they had not used support cables. As a lego kid, I understand that they are very unstable when you go vertical, but I'm sure they could have figured it out. Either way, looking at the eclectic patterns that emerged were pretty cool.

uh...what if a strong breeze just happens to pass through? wouldn't half the tower topple over and kill all the innocent tourists? clearly Denmark must be wiped off the map before they succeed in their cunning plan to kill England with those fun, colorful bricks of joy.

Uhh.. hello? Metal pole in the middle? Disqualified. Guy-wires are bad enough, but the thing's built around a metal pole!

So... anyways... I'm not a Lego nerd or anything, but if anyone has any Legos of any sort they want to get rid of, EIP. Particularly of interest are the lower speed motors that would work for building a steering system.

diy.despair.com

Ok, well, I am a little. While it's an all wheel drive truck that has the power to climb hills (it goes way to fast to rock crawl but it can jump), it has no suspension or steering.

This link however, shows how over application of Lego-nerdiness can take you places that, well, are kind of mediocre. Apparently there are meetings like this in Denmark (?) called LowLug and you can find more about them on Brickshelf.com. Another place I'm not nearly nerdy enough to browse once a day to check out new uploads.

Sweet. One of the coolest things I've seen. But;

Link (new window)

is ROCKIN'. I would like to make mini-fig scale-ish remote control rock crawling and mud bogging trucks. I built a remote steering system but it turns too quickly. Anything larger and it's too big for the truck. I also find that the included wires for the motor are too short, but an infared receiver is spendy!

"Shaped like the mast of a viking longboat?"

It's just a stick. It could be a giant fettucini. Or an oversize matchstick. Or a streetlight post. Or a 2x4. Or the mast of a 19th century New Bedford whaling ship.

/I could go on...

Pretty to look at, but it doesn't qualify for a tallest LEGO tower if it has non-LEGO support.

Cheating, unless it is ONLY Lego. No support poles or wires. Using a crane to build it is okay I guess, but they could have made a pyramid if they wanted a more stable structure.

Then they could have sold off chunk by chunk for charity.

We could call him Mr. Corporate Shill, since the only ones who get their panties in a bunch over the correct use is Lego.

I understand why they do it, they have to vigorously defend their trademark or risk losing it completely, but... why would anyone else care?

I don't know why either. It just wouldn't be that hard...and I could use a lot less blocks too...

sure, use a crane or scaffolding of some kind to build but the structure should be 100% LEGO brick without guy wires

Guy wires + pole don't take any weight - they're to stop sway... it's only made of light plastic, imagine if it got caught by a large gust of wind. Probably find, this being England (it's actually only a couple of miles down the road from me), that their insurance companies demanded it was made "safe" by a pole / guy wires.

But they could have made the guy wires out of lego too, or at least used a huge length of the tubing you use with the lego pneumatic system.

I'm not sure why, but all the hardcore collectors over at Lugnet.com etc. are pretty gung ho about it. They are feel like they're part of the Lego community and therefore treat it a lot like it's their company too. I only just stopped collecting about 3 years ago (sold everything for five figures, mostly old space sets), and have already noticed myself saying "Legos" more often than not. Strange phenomenon...

Why did they need a crane to hoist up the 20cm sections? How much could 20cm of Legos possibly weigh?
