A Simpsons thread is welcome on this, the greatest of all days...

WHACKING DAY!!

"Eye on Springfield" takes a look at the Springfield tradition
known as "Whacking Day". Founded by Jebediah Springfield in 1775, every May 10th, the citizens of Springfield drive the snakes into the town square, then club them to death.

If I could have found a distinct video clip, or an article other than a plot synopsis, believe me, I would have submitted it.

Too bad they've pretty much elimated heavy drinking on trains now.

Which was really the last reason to have ever taken a train as opposed to an airplane.

If Oil prices keep going up like they have been, moving goods and people by rail may soon be the only cost effective option..

Can't understand how you can get there faster on an airplane if there's a 3 hour cushion where you have to put up with total morons who think you're going to explode.

in honor of train day, I am going to go out hire a pretty but skanky hooker and call a few of my well endowed(not that I would know by personal experience) black friends(yes I have those) and have them run a train on her, while I sit in the corner, holding a video camera with one hand, and furiously masturbating with the other.

I actually took a trip from Orlando to San Diego in February. It was pretty cool--got to see the Rockies for the first time, had stops in Chicago and DC, etc. But like you said--not doing it again. By about the third day (even given that I had days to stay in one city and hang out) I just wanted to be back in SD already.

Call me crazy, but I think that even in this day of integrated circuits, it's kind of amazing that we can lay two tracks of steel in such a way that they are parallel enough to allow a big-assed metal thing to travel along them without flipping over every few feet. And we have done this for a couple centuries. Amazing.

RoadRunnr 2008-05-10 06:17:35 PM
I choo choo choose to take a train. Airplanes are only faster when they are in the air. Since 9/11, air travel takes a lot longer.

I can't wait for my next trip. Train travel gives me the time and excuse to actually read a book, and look out the window, and just relax. Otherwise, I'm working and online and getting nagged by people.

zero bars ftw.

There are ridiculous security measures in the pipeline for trains and buses as well. I got caught up in one of the retarded airline-like security checks for greyhound a few years ago.

Remember how we used to make fun of the Soviets for requiring papers for internal travel?

No. But really. Could you or anyone you know recreate the railroads? And looking at your profile, I demand you develop a video game from the point of view of the Chinaman cutting railroad ties and laying rail. There would be some sort of fatigue and food indicators that decide how shaky is the rail you are trying to put down. Then some jerk would make a kung-fu joke and you would be able to click the option that says, "I fight only in self defense." and then kick their asses. It would be an awesome game.

Too bad they've pretty much elimated heavy drinking on trains now.

What? I did not notice this.

I took a train from orlando to NYC. Got a private sleeper room. It was awesome. Huge picture window, my own toilet, plenty of room. I just pulled a bottle of rum out of my napsack and and got toasted while watching the world go by. took 24 hours to get from orlando to NYC. At night I pulled the bed down and the train rocked me to sleep. No being treated like cattle, no being packed in like a slave ship, it was bliss.

Will take that over flying any day.

"Book a ticket now and experience stunning views you can't see any other way but by rail."

And that's ALL the benefits of riding Amtrak, summed up nicely right there. The stuff they don't tell you however...

Rode Amtrak from Salem OR to San Jose, CA once. NEVER AGAIN. Let me repeat: NEVER EVER AGAIN. Seats suck, cars stink, same movie on repeat through the whole trip(Seabiscuit), bathrooms are BARELY marginally better than port-a-potties, extreme pricing on food and drink items, can't get off and get anything at stops generally, and the DELAYS...OMG, the delays. It took two full days to go 623 miles. Would have taken 8-10 hours in a car and probably cost me less, after taking a cab from the train station to my hotel and all. Fark Amtrak. It's no wonder they're losing money.

Add in the 3 hours you have to waste getting through security & check in. Then add the 5 hours you might get to spend on the tarmac. It could still be faster on the freaking train.

Amtrak does need to get their own tracks though. Sharing with freight is just stupid.

You were probably riding the Coast Starlight. It is always horribly late since it goes from Seattle to LA and takes second place to freight trains. Try the Talgo (if you need to travel only within the northwest) that runs from Seattle to Eugene, or so. It is more on time than the one that goes from Seattle to LA and has better movies. It's much faster, too, I assume because it's single-decker instead of a double-decker.

What's the movie where a couple of prisoners escape from an Alaskan prison and protect themselves from the cold with crisco and saran wrap and then hijack a train? The two prisoners looked like Charles Bronson and the helicopter guy from the mad max movies.

Perhaps Runaway Train with Jon Voight...

Soon with the rising cost of fuel, airplanes will only be for the rich and business people. Trains will be a good way to travel.

Poopspasm, if you took the Sunset Limited to the San Diegan you never went through the Rockies. The S.L., when it's not hurtling into swamps, was Frank Sinatra's favorite train.

As for the "Coast Starlate", what xuanzhiyouxuan said. It's the Union Pacific farking with them. Same railroad that mattpar hates(don't live on their MainLine, they've got 140+ years there compared to you) I thought you got used to 'em. And if you're like mattpar, STAY THE HELL OUTTA FLAGSTAFF. The Santa Fe tends to pile 'em on getting up the mountain & the lack of bridges/overpasses plays hell with traffic.

xuanzhiyouxuan I encountered a big beefy black guy w/a shaved head & "SECURITY" shirt @ Greyhound's sleazy L.A. depot when they were giving lip service to customer safety. He shoulda been working he door @ a niteclub, pawed thru everything, shot me dirty looks. Oh, if you don't like getting hassled & ride the damn dog, DON'T GO THRU BREEZEWOOD, PA. They've got a federal grant on the War On Drugs to have failed football wash-outs get in your grill while throwing your stuff on the Post House formica floor. A friend saw them beating the crap outta some old guy who they felt asked too many questions. Link (new window)

St_Ides you can drink all you want in your sleeper & , unless the draconian security has kicked in and your subtle, you can get away with it in your seat or in the Superliner Sightseer Lounge. I was sitting around @ 2 AM with a buncha Floridians hurling thru the panhandle towards Orlando as they passed around a bottle of Early Times, just like in that Steve Goodman song, lamenting the loss of the FunTrain;

Holy hell.. what airport are you flying out of?

Leaving Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson-Franklin-Campbell-Miller-Perdue Airport, security is rarely more than 10 minutes, at the most. And it's the busiest airport in the nation.

I can get off the train in the station, check in at the Delta kiosks, and be through security in less than 15 minutes. Add 15 minutes for a Monday or Friday morning.

FlyingJ:
I made the mistake of doing a little shopping trip at an army surplus store just before boarding the greyhound. Handcuffs, tripwire, camoflauge duct tape, afghan language manual. I realized during the search it all looked pretty suspicious together. Luckily, they thought I was into hardcore bondage and I continued on my way with some odd looks from them and some chuckles.

FlyingJ 2008-05-10 07:31:36 PM
ultraholland I think that was Danny Trejo's screen debut. And the other funny thing is Carl from "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" is a dead-on impersonation of Jon Voight's (Oscar nominated?-wtf) performance in that film. The guy who wrote "Speed" did at as a flip on Akira Kurasowa's original screenplay for the movie, btw-which was came from a news story from New Jersey that Kurosowa read about;Link (new window)

/other than the 139th Anniversary of the Golden Spike this event is kinda dopey
