(WWL) Hero New Orleans FBI chief resigns, rather than be transferred back to DC. Something about wanting to stay and help the city, "primarily the African American kids an opportunity so they don't have to gravitate to the street drug trade."   (wwl.com) divider line 99

Definitely a hero.

I'm naturally suspicious of this guy because he's a cop, but if he actually wants to help people instead of putting them in jail, that's awesome.

Feds aren't supposed to help anyone.

I'm confused.

copper1861 2008-05-10 03:17:42 PM
He says his children live in Houston but that New Orleans is still close enough to see them when he wants to do so.

Sorry, that's still kinda toolish, but then, I don't really have a soft spot for absent fathers.

But all cops rape children and murder women.

I think you have cops mixed with Marines in Iraq.

John Kerry is needed to validate my statement.

There are lots of savage poor people where I live (Dublin), and they are some of the whitest people I've ever seen. Even on the South Side, there are places that are scarier than some of 'hoods in New York.

I'm surprised no one's calling him a racist for saying it's African-American kids who are dealing drugs. What's the saying about a small shovel?

Change the drug laws and there will be no incentive to "gravitate toward the street drug trade." Then this man can devote his efforts to something even more noble.

Come to Harrisonburg. It's quite nice if you can stand the periodic poultry shiat wind that blows in from time to time.

The reason he is resigning and staying in New Orleans has nothing to do with trying to help. The man has huge political goals and wants to enter the local fray in New Orleans. FBI Regulations require he either resign or be transferred due to his situation. He chose to resign because he wants to run for office in New Orleans, the rest is a smoke screen.

I take your point, but blaming all bad things on poverty just does not really work. A lot of very dirt poor rural white and black people are good law abiding citizens. But they are not part of an Urban mentality.

The (predominantly) black urban culture which has developed since the 1960's in the USA tends to create more poverty, chaos, and crime of every sort. The bad thing is, that culture has some academics and a few politicians who make excuses for it and try to protect it.

I've been; I'd live there if the girlie didn't work in DC proper (I work in Sterling, so it'd be commutable for me.) Seriously, h'burg is just about my speed, or somewhere like it.

yeah, but how much you want to bet that option is NEVER on the table. Democrat, Republican, they none of them really want to end this ridiculous war on drugs.

I wish I could say that wasn't true, I really do. I've grown up with hardly any bias, but once you spend a week or 2 in Detroit things change. Once you become the object of anger from a collective race your views change involuntarily. God, I hate that place.

Good luck. The drug trade is a measure of success in most black inner city culture. Becoming a baller is the equivalent of a white suburban kid getting into an Ivy League school.

So I'm assuming your comprehensive and nuanced perspective of inner city black issues is entirely derived from reruns of the wire

Here's the backstory along with the perspective of a local (kick/replies):

(1) Bernazzini was forced out of his position in charge of the N.O. FBI office, after he gave several media interviews saying he was considering running for mayor. Besides the possible legal violation of electioneering while holding a federal office, the FBI was very concerned that (as they are already doing) defendants charged and convicted of corruption and other crimes would say "they just trumped up my charge so Bernazzini could eliminate me as a political threat, and/or put another skin on the wall to make himself look good." Obviously he had to go: you just cannot have the chief federal law enforcement officer using his official position to set up a political campaign for himself.

(2) If you could put his machinations into a picture it would need an EPIC FAIL tag, because he seemed unaware he could never have run for mayor in 2009: the city charter requires a 5-year residency, and Bernazzini will not have that much time living here by the next mayor's term. So he could not have been a candidate.

(3) Nonetheless it is touching to me that someone who was a complete outsider came here after a full career and liked the city so much that he wanted to stay and remain involved, and apparently still wants to, even though none of his family lives here. To me, that is great (preferable to him being caught on a mic saying "god I can't wait to get out of this hellhole"). Also, I will miss his news conferences with the thick Boston accent and dark suits. Perhaps he can be an extra in a Dick Tracy remake.

(4) This is still a black majority city and will remain so and I don't think we are going to have a white mayor. Nor do I think we will have a white DA, although there are two very good white lawyers currently running for DA.

Wasn't forced busing great? It turned my neighborhood from all white to all black in less then 10 years. It used to be a nice neighborhood but now is a place I would be scared to drive around.. in daylight.
